The most useful full-clear order has 18 encounters. Isaac is fought first as encounter 5 in the Main Hall, immediately after the first Death battle, and again as encounter 13 in the Heart of the Clock after you disable the Cursed Horologium. Prepare for the first Isaac before entering the Main Hall; prepare for the rematch while following the Clock Tower route. Guides disagree because some count 13 fights, while others count 14 bosses spread across 18 encounters.
Why Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse has more than one “boss order”
The game’s middle acts are partly open rather than strictly locked to one corridor-by-corridor sequence. As a result, a guide can describe the same campaign with different numbers without necessarily contradicting the route itself.

| Counting convention | What it means | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 18 encounters | A detailed full-clear route that lists every arena visit, including repeat battles and optional encounters. | Use this when you need the exact practical sequence, locations and rewards. |
| 14 bosses | The distinct boss roster in the full route. Death, Isaac, Joan and Dracula each appear twice. | Use this when discussing how many unique bosses the game contains in the route. |
| 13 boss fights | A shorter convention used by another guide, which treats the middle game as a more open progression and excludes some encounters from its main count. | Use this when comparing walkthroughs; it is not proof that one route is broken. |
One guide also classifies 11 fights as mandatory and Arthur and Succubus as optional. The 18-encounter list below is therefore a practical full-clear route, not an immutable sequence that every player must follow in the same room order.
Full 18-encounter boss order
This route includes the repeat battles, optional bosses and trophy-only Dracula encounters so you can identify every arena visit.

When to prepare for the first Isaac fight
The correct preparation point
Prepare after encounter 4, the first Death battle in the Stairway to Hell and Catacombs, and before you enter the Main Hall for encounter 5. The route descriptions identify Isaac as the fifth encounter, directly after Death. If you have just finished Death, that is the natural checkpoint to stop, heal, review equipment and spend any available resources.
What the available guidance does not establish
No published route in the supplied material gives an official Isaac-specific character level, potion quantity or mandatory loadout. Do not treat an invented level target or fixed number of consumables as a requirement. The reliable recommendation is to arrive with ordinary healing and combat resources intact and with the abilities you have earned through the opening bosses.
A practical pre-fight checklist
- Heal completely after Death rather than carrying damage into the Main Hall.
- Replace or replenish ordinary healing items if your route has consumed most of them.
- Confirm that your preferred whip, sub-weapon and movement tools are equipped before crossing into the Main Hall.
- Keep enough combat resources for a learning attempt; the route does not promise a special Isaac-only item cache.
- Note the encounter number in your guide. If it calls Isaac “boss 5,” it is counting the detailed route, not claiming that five unique bosses have appeared.
Isaac’s second fight: the Clock Tower route
How to reach the rematch
The rematch is encounter 13 in the detailed route, in the Heart of the Clock. It is not another Main Hall battle. Follow the Clock Tower progression and deactivate the Cursed Horologium; that action opens the route to the Heart of the Clock and Isaac’s second arena.

What changes in the rematch
The first Isaac encounter gives no Arcana card. Winning the rematch awards The Zealot card, whose ability is Chronomantic Dive. After the battle, collect the Chauve-Souris spear in the arena. Treat that pickup as part of the encounter’s completion rather than assuming it was awarded after the first Isaac fight.
Rematch preparation
- Enter the Clock Tower branch with healing and combat supplies restored as far as your current route allows.
- Make disabling the Cursed Horologium an explicit objective; reaching the general Clock Tower area is not the same as reaching the Heart of the Clock.
- Leave room in your post-fight route to collect Chauve-Souris before moving on.
- Record the reward separately from the first Isaac entry: no card for the first fight, The Zealot and Chronomantic Dive for the rematch.
Mandatory and optional encounters
The 18-entry route is designed for a full clear. A shorter presentation counts 13 fights and labels 11 as mandatory, with Arthur and Succubus optional. That distinction explains why a walkthrough may move directly from the main progression to later story encounters without listing every arena in the table above.
| Category | Encounters affected | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| Repeated story bosses | Joan, Death, Isaac and Dracula each appear twice. | Check the location and reward, not just the name, to identify which fight you have reached. |
| Optional full-clear fights | Succubus and Arthur. | Skipping them can produce a shorter boss count while still following the main story route. |
| Trophy-only entries | Both Dracula encounters. | Do not expect a new Arcana card from these entries in the listed route. |
How to reconcile a guide that uses a different order
If Isaac appears earlier or later in the list
First compare the location. The first Isaac must be the Main Hall encounter that follows the first Death battle; the rematch is in the Heart of the Clock after the Cursed Horologium is disabled. A guide that lists only one Isaac is using a shortened count or omitting the rematch, not revealing a third arena.

If a guide says there are 13 bosses
Check whether it means 13 fights rather than 13 unique bosses. The alternate convention follows the game’s partly open middle and excludes optional encounters from its main progression. Use the 18-entry table when you need a full-clear checklist.

If a guide lists a different middle-game sequence
Compare the named arena, not only the numerical position. The middle is not fully linear, so practical routes can branch around Talos, Carmilla, Brauner and Mammon while still converging on the Notre-Dame and Clock Tower encounters. The listed order is a dependable navigation plan, not a claim that every door is hard-locked until the preceding table row.
Release context
GamesRadar lists Evil Empire and Konami as developer and publisher and reports versions for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch 2 released on October 15, 2026. Platform or edition differences can affect terminology and controls, so use the labels shown in your version when matching locations such as the Main Hall, Heart of the Clock and Court of the Night.
