Garmin Instinct 3 is the better hiking watch if you need recorded GPS tracks, multi-band positioning, breadcrumb navigation, route-back tools or connected course planning. Casio Pro Trek is the better fit if you mainly want dependable compass, altitude, barometric-pressure and temperature readings in a solar-powered outdoor watch. There is no universal winner. “Pro Trek” covers many models, and Instinct 3 comes in Solar and AMOLED versions, two case sizes and different battery profiles. Choose the exact model before comparing specifications.

First, define which watches are being compared
“Casio Pro Trek” is a family, not one specification sheet
Casio sells Pro Trek watches with different displays, case designs, connectivity and sensor arrangements. The Pro Trek overview specifically notes that Bluetooth and Multi Band 6 are not available on every model. A statement about a PRW-35 or PRW-6611Y-1 should not automatically be applied to another Pro Trek reference.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The analog-digital PRW-6611Y-1 is a different example. Casio lists Tough Solar, a digital compass, altimeter, barometer, thermometer and 100-meter water resistance. Its case measures 51.6 × 51.5 × 14.8 mm and weighs 57 g. Those dimensions and weight belong to that model only.
Instinct 3 also has meaningful variants
Garmin’s Instinct 3 product page covers Solar and AMOLED versions in 45 mm and 50 mm sizes. Display technology, case size and GPS mode change the battery estimate, so “Instinct 3 battery life” is not a single number.
What Garmin Instinct 3 adds for hikers
GPS activity recording and return navigation
Garmin lists hiking among Instinct 3’s outdoor activities. Its product description identifies multi-band GPS and SatIQ, which automatically manages satellite settings on compatible devices. Garmin also lists breadcrumb trail navigation, Back to Start, TracBack and reference-point functions. In practical terms, that gives you a way to record where you walked and use the watch to retrace or return toward a starting location.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Garmin describes the navigation hardware this way: “Navigate your next trail with an altimeter, barometer and 3-axis electronic compass.” The watch can therefore combine satellite positioning with ABC sensors rather than relying on a compass alone. These features do not make it a substitute for a paper map, a full navigation device or an emergency communicator. Batteries can run down, satellite reception can be obstructed and electronic navigation should be backed up on serious routes.
Courses, waypoints and phone-assisted planning
Garmin’s January 6, 2025 Instinct 3 announcement says compatible watches can pair with Garmin Explore to review more detailed maps and create waypoints and courses. Compatibility depends on the selected watch and app setup, so confirm the exact combination before assuming a particular planning workflow.

This connected approach matters if you plan routes at home, send them to the watch and want more than a live compass bearing. It is less important if you already carry a dedicated map and only want quick readings during a walk.
ABC sensors
Instinct 3 includes an altimeter, barometer and 3-axis electronic compass. The altimeter can help you monitor elevation changes; the barometer can show pressure trends; and the compass provides directional information. Sensor readings still need sensible interpretation. Pressure changes can reflect weather systems, elevation changes or both, so a barometer reading is an awareness cue, not a definitive forecast.

Direct instrument readings
The PRW-35’s Triple Sensor package measures direction, atmospheric pressure and temperature, and altitude. Casio’s description says: “Triple Sensor (digital compass, barometer/thermometer, and altimeter) senses natural changes.” Dedicated sensor buttons are useful when you want to press a physical control and see a reading without moving through a smartwatch menu.
That simplicity is the central Pro Trek proposition. If your hike involves checking a bearing, watching elevation gain or looking for a pressure trend, a suitable Pro Trek can provide those readings without requiring GPS tracking or a phone-based route workflow.
Solar power and radio-controlled time
The PRW-35 collection lists solar power and Multi Band 6 radio-controlled timekeeping. Solar charging reduces the need for routine battery replacement, while radio control can keep time synchronized where the relevant signal is available. Both features are model and region dependent; verify the exact regional reference before buying.

Outdoor resistance and information functions
Casio lists 10-bar water resistance and low-temperature resistance for the PRW-35 collection. It also lists sunrise and sunset information, world time, alarms and a full-auto LED backlight. These functions support outdoor use but do not amount to GPS navigation or recorded route guidance.
Recommended Free Tools
The PRW-6611Y-1 demonstrates why model-specific checking matters: its listed water resistance is 100 meters, its construction is analog-digital and its case is 57 g. You should not transfer the PRW-35’s 10-bar rating, STN LCD or dedicated-button description to every Pro Trek watch.

Battery life: compare the mode, not the headline number
Instinct 3 AMOLED 45 mm
Garmin lists up to 18 days in smartwatch mode for the specified 45 mm AMOLED model, or up to 7 days with the always-on display enabled. It lists up to 32 hours in GPS-only mode and up to 23 hours when all satellite systems and multi-band positioning are used. These are Garmin estimates for that variant and those modes, not independent hiking measurements.
Instinct 3 Solar 45 mm
Garmin’s Solar battery table lists up to 28 days of smartwatch use for the 45 mm Solar model. GPS-only use is listed at up to 40 hours, or up to 130 hours with solar. All-satellite-plus-multi-band use is listed at up to 24 hours, or up to 40 hours with solar.
The solar figures have explicit conditions: Garmin assumes outdoor exposure at 50,000 lux. The smartwatch estimate assumes all-day wear with three hours outside each day. Garmin also lists higher figures for the 50 mm Solar version, but the exact number depends on the selected table entry and mode.

Enabled features affect actual endurance. Garmin identifies activity tracking, heart rate, notifications, GPS, sensors and connected sensors as variables. A long hike using multi-band positioning, frequent sensor readings and notifications will not consume power at the same rate as an idle watch.
Casio’s solar claim is not a directly comparable GPS-runtime figure
The cited PRW-35 information confirms solar power but does not provide a directly comparable GPS tracking-runtime estimate. That is not evidence that one watch will last longer in every real-world situation; it means the two manufacturers describe endurance differently. Compare a specific Casio model’s power documentation with the specific Instinct mode you intend to use.

When physical buttons are the priority
Casio highlights large dedicated sensor buttons on the PRW-35. That layout favors an immediate compass, altitude, pressure or temperature check. It may appeal to hikers who prefer an instrument-like watch and do not want route menus, notifications or phone pairing.
When a smartwatch interface is more useful
Instinct 3 is designed around outdoor activity profiles, satellite settings and navigation functions. The choice between its Solar and AMOLED displays is separate from the choice between GPS and no GPS: both are Instinct 3 variants, but their viewing behavior and battery estimates differ. Select the case size that fits your wrist and the display type you can read comfortably in your normal conditions.

How to choose the right watch for your hiking style
Choose Instinct 3 when these statements are true
- You want a GPS record that can be reviewed after the hike.
- You expect to use breadcrumb trails, Back to Start, TracBack or reference points.
- You plan routes, waypoints or courses with a compatible Garmin Explore setup.
- You want multi-band positioning or SatIQ options and accept the battery trade-offs of those modes.
- You prefer selecting between Solar and AMOLED versions and between 45 mm and 50 mm cases.
Choose a suitable Pro Trek when these statements are true
- Your essential readings are direction, elevation, atmospheric pressure and temperature.
- You prefer dedicated physical controls and a conventional outdoor-watch experience.
- You want solar-powered timekeeping and, on a compatible model, Multi Band 6 radio control.
- You do not need the GPS route-recording and course-planning features documented for Instinct 3.
- You are willing to select a specific Pro Trek reference rather than assuming every model has the same sensors or connectivity.
Model-selection checklist before purchase
- Write down the navigation requirement. Decide whether you need a recorded track, route-back function, course guidance or only a compass bearing.
- Record the exact reference. For Garmin, identify Solar or AMOLED, 45 mm or 50 mm, and the intended GPS mode. For Casio, record the complete Pro Trek model number.
- Verify the sensor list. Confirm altimeter, barometer, thermometer and compass on the manufacturer’s page for that model.
- Check power assumptions. For Instinct 3, read the estimate for your display, size and satellite mode. For a Pro Trek, confirm the model’s solar and radio-control details.
- Check water resistance and dimensions. Use the exact rating, case size and weight; do not substitute a family-level description.
- Confirm app compatibility. If courses, waypoints or map review matter, verify that the watch and phone support the intended Garmin Explore workflow.
- Plan a backup. Carry a map and a reliable way to communicate on routes where losing navigation or power would create a safety problem.
Important limitations of the comparison
The available specifications come from official Garmin and Casio product and support information. They establish listed features and manufacturer estimates, not a laboratory or field comparison between the watches. No controlled side-by-side evidence here proves that either brand has superior GPS accuracy, compass accuracy, comfort, sunlight readability or real-world runtime.
Environmental sensors also require interpretation. Altimeters can be affected by changing air pressure, and barometric pressure can change because of weather or elevation. Use readings as part of your navigation and weather-awareness routine, not as the sole basis for a safety decision.
Bottom line: which is better for hiking?
For hikers who want GPS tracks, multi-band positioning, route-back tools and connected course planning, choose the Garmin Instinct 3 variant that matches your preferred display, size and battery mode. For hikers who want a solar outdoor watch centered on compass, altitude, pressure and temperature readings, choose a Pro Trek model whose exact sensor, display, connectivity and water-resistance specifications match the trip.
