On a Deck Mate 2, their proof of concept accessed the internal deck-check camera and sent deck-order data to a nearby phone. That is not the same as a casino-floor breach: the researchers had not tried the attack in an operating casino, and the available reporting does not connect it to the 2022 Hustler Casino Live controversy.
What the researchers found
IOActive reverse-engineered the original firmware state machines of a ShuffleMaster Deck Mate 1 and Deck Mate 2. These machines help dealers shuffle cards and check decks. The researchers reported no evidence of hidden manufacturer functions designed to cheat players or increase the house edge. Their work instead described what an attacker might do after gaining sufficient access to compromised equipment.
The central risk is information: if a machine can read cards during a deck check, a compromise could potentially expose the order of the deck before those cards are dealt. The whitepaper also discusses manipulating card order, but feasibility depends on the model’s hardware and on how an attacker reaches the device. Deck Mate 2: the camera and USB route
WIRED reported that the Deck Mate 2 has an internal camera used for deck checks and an external USB port. IOActive’s laboratory demonstration used a Raspberry Pi to access the camera’s data and transmit deck-order information over Bluetooth to a nearby phone. Researcher Joseph Tartaro described the result as allowing them to read the camera’s continuous data and know the hands that players would receive once that deck entered play.

Those details describe a proof of concept under controlled conditions, not evidence that someone has performed the same operation against a live casino machine. Tartaro also discussed other possible access routes; they remain proposed attack paths rather than documented casino incidents. The full account and vendor response are in WIRED’s report.
Deck Mate 1 is not the same attack
The older Deck Mate 1 reportedly lacks the Deck Mate 2’s external USB port and internal camera. For the route IOActive examined, WIRED said researchers needed access to the case and to a chip that stores code. That is a materially different hardware and access requirement, so the Deck Mate 2 camera-and-USB scenario should not be presented as applying unchanged to Deck Mate 1.

Could a hacked shuffler reveal the deck?
In principle, yes—if an attacker can compromise the relevant electronics and obtain the deck-check data. A device that observes cards while verifying a deck can become an information source before the cards are dealt. IOActive’s demonstration shows that capability in a lab setting for the Deck Mate 2.
That conclusion has important limits. The work does not establish that every machine can be reached in the same way, that a particular casino’s configuration is vulnerable, or that an attacker could operate unnoticed under casino surveillance and regulatory controls. It also does not provide a statistic for how often shufflers are compromised; no topic-specific prevalence figure was reported.

Did this cause the Hustler Casino Live controversy?
No such connection has been established by the sources. The research was motivated in part by the September 2022 Hustler Casino Live hand controversy and its postmortem, which reported no credible evidence of foul play. The later shuffler research shows a possible class of attack on examined equipment; it does not prove that a shuffler was used in that game.
Laboratory proof of concept versus a casino-floor attack
IOActive’s findings should be read as a security assessment of equipment under laboratory conditions. WIRED reported that the researchers had not attempted the attack in an actual casino. Light & Wonder told WIRED that neither the DeckMate 2 nor another L&W automatic shuffler had ever been compromised on a casino floor, and said the laboratory conditions could not be replicated in a regulated, monitored casino environment.

The company also stated that IOActive’s testing did not identify defects or design flaws in the DeckMate 2. IOActive responded that the company had acknowledged some issues and planned fixes. The cited sources do not confirm which fixes, if any, were deployed or whether individual operators adopted proposed mitigations. These are competing statements about scope and remediation, not an independently verified record of casino-floor exploitation.

The headline’s phrase refers to the potential consequences of controlling a compromised shuffler: learning deck order and, depending on the machine and access obtained, manipulating card order. It does not mean the researchers demonstrated unlimited control over every game, every casino system, or every Deck Mate unit. Attack feasibility depends on the exact model, firmware, physical access, network or peripheral exposure, and the operator’s monitoring.

Mark Pace of the International Gaming Standards Association told WIRED, “The short-term fix might just be eliminating the entry point.” That observation points to a practical defensive priority: restrict physical and electronic access to service interfaces, protect firmware and code-storage components, monitor unusual peripherals or wireless activity, and verify that maintenance and inspection procedures detect tampering. The sources do not establish a universal mitigation checklist or current deployment status.
How operators should interpret the finding
- Inventory by model. Deck Mate 1 and Deck Mate 2 have different hardware and therefore different likely attack paths.
- Control physical access. A route requiring a case opening or access to a code-storage chip is different from one involving an exposed port; both make chain-of-custody and service controls relevant.
- Review deck-check data paths. Determine what the camera and related electronics can expose, where data can leave the machine, and whether unexpected wireless or peripheral activity is detectable.
- Validate firmware and maintenance. Preserve approved firmware versions, document service events, and investigate unexplained changes rather than assuming a machine is trustworthy because it is normally monitored.
- Separate evidence from allegations. A compromised-device scenario is not evidence that the manufacturer intended to cheat players, nor proof that a particular disputed hand involved a shuffler.
What players and investigators should take away
The research makes automated shufflers a legitimate security subject, especially because deck-check hardware can hold information with direct game consequences. It does not show a demonstrated casino-floor compromise, quantify real-world exploitation, or resolve the Hustler Casino Live dispute. The most accurate reading is narrower and more useful: IOActive showed that, under laboratory conditions, access to certain shuffler components could expose or potentially influence card order, while the practical risk in a regulated casino depends on access controls, monitoring, device configuration, and any fixes actually deployed.
