Cashless Nation: How UPI Changed Everything, a book about the rise of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI), was celebrated at an IIT Madras campus event on 5 October 2026. That followed an earlier release by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman at IITMAA Sangam in Bengaluru on 26 September, so the two events should not be mistaken for a single launch.
Why are there two launch dates?
The Ministry of Finance says Sitharaman released the book at IITMAA Sangam in Bengaluru on 26 September 2026. A separate PTI report carried by ThePrint describes an IIT Madras campus event celebrating the book’s arrival on 5 October. The latter is the event behind reports that the book launched at IIT Madras; the government release documents the earlier Bengaluru event.

#1 Best Overall
At the IIT Madras event, former Reserve Bank of India Governor C. Rangarajan called the book a “brilliant narrative” of the events, policies and personalities behind UPI. PTI also attributes to him the observation that UPI “is an envy of the world now, and open to everyone from a street vendor to a billionaire.”
