Megan Garside’s GamesRadar+ review finds that Mike Flanagan’s eight-episode Carrie makes Stephen King’s story feel newly relevant by bringing its bullying into the social-media age and widening the focus beyond Carrie White. But Garside also finds the expansion uneven: the prom sequence is foreshadowed too early, the revenge feels rushed, and the finale lacks the intensity she expected. Her verdict is mixed but favorable—not that this is a faithful retelling, but that Flanagan has made a substantial new interpretation whose added storylines do not always serve its central tragedy.
Does Mike Flanagan’s Carrie bring anything new to the story?
Yes, according to Garside: its most consequential update is not simply a modern setting, but a broader view of how cruelty spreads. Her review describes social-media bullying as a force that can harm a whole community, rather than only the person being targeted. The series also touches on school-system pressures, drug use and suicide; those are elements Garside notes in her account, not evidence that the show offers a comprehensive treatment of those subjects.
The adaptation keeps recognizable parts of King’s story, including the bathroom scene and prom, while adding material about Carrie’s family and other characters. In Garside’s reading, the result asks what happens when the story’s familiar private torment becomes part of a wider social world.
How does the series change the story?
More room for the people around Carrie
The eight-episode format gives the series space to spend time with characters beyond Carrie. Garside highlights Samantha Sloyan’s Margaret as more complicated than earlier portrayals and notes the attention given to bully Chris. That wider focus is part of what makes this an expansion rather than a scene-for-scene retelling.

For Garside, the expansion has gaps as well as strengths. She wanted more attention to Carrie’s father and home life, and found a new subplot confusing. The added perspective does not automatically make every character or strand clearer.
A question that could extend beyond one season
The clearest departure is a subplot about other women who have telekinetic experiences. It raises the question, “What if there are more people out there like Carrie?” Garside sees that possibility as a way to carry the story into later seasons. She also considers the trade-off: a continuing mythology can broaden the world, but may pull attention away from the concentrated tragedy at its center.

Why does the prom payoff divide the review?
Prom remains one of the story’s defining set pieces, but Garside says the series signals it too early for the scene to deliver the surprise she wanted. She also finds Carrie’s revenge rushed and the finale less intense than expected. In her view, the adaptation’s new plotlines and forward-looking setup leave important emotional beats with less room to land.
That is the main tension in her assessment: the expanded version has room to explore a contemporary community around Carrie, yet the added scope can dilute the catharsis that makes the story’s climax matter. Garside’s criticism is about the balance of this adaptation, not a claim that the familiar scenes have been removed.

How does it compare with the 1976 and 2013 adaptations?
Garside uses Brian De Palma’s 1976 film and the 2013 Chloe Moretz adaptation as comparison points. She says the 1976 film still holds up and that she has a soft spot for the 2013 version; her case for another adaptation is that the world has changed enough to make a new interpretation legible. She does not present Flanagan’s series as a replacement for either film or as a more faithful version of King’s novel.
The practical distinction is format and scope: this is an eight-episode television expansion, while Garside’s main reservation is that the first season might have worked better as a limited series. Viewers choosing between them may care most about whether they want a serialized reworking with added characters and mythology, or prefer the earlier films’ feature-length form. The review does not rank the adaptations or claim that one is best for every viewer.

Is the series worth watching?
Garside’s answer is qualified. She welcomes Flanagan’s willingness to move beyond a straight retelling and finds the modernization timely, but the rushed revenge, less forceful finale and early prom foreshadowing hold the season back for her. A viewer drawn to a wider, social-media-era interpretation may find the changes compelling; someone looking primarily for tightly controlled suspense and a forceful climactic payoff may share her reservations.
Rotten Tomatoes’ roundup of first reviews also includes both praise for the modern reframing and criticism of whether Carrie suits an eight-episode format. Those excerpts show a range of reactions, not a representative consensus or an aggregate score.

Where and when can you watch Carrie?
Amazon’s official announcement schedules all eight episodes of the first television adaptation of Carrie to premiere on Prime Video on October 7, 2026. That is the announced date as of October 3, 2026, so it should be understood as scheduled rather than a confirmation that the episodes are already available. Amazon names Mike Flanagan as showrunner, writer and executive producer, as well as director of four episodes; Stephen King is also an executive producer, and Summer H. Howell stars as Carrie White.
King’s official series listing gives the same premiere date and service and names the episode directors. Amazon and King’s site report different counts for actors who read for the lead role—more than 1,000 and nearly 1,500, respectively—without explaining the difference, so neither figure establishes a definitive total.
Should you read the novel first?
The television series is based on King’s Carrie, but its additional characters and plotlines belong to this adaptation and are not all part of the novel. Reading the book first is useful if you want to distinguish King’s story from Flanagan’s expansion; it is not necessary to understand the series.
