He is not simply interchangeable with every player listed as a midfielder: Kobbie Mainoo offers a different on-ball emphasis, while the evidence available for several other squad options does not support a detailed like-for-like verdict. The most useful comparison is therefore about role fit, not declaring a universal winner.
What Baleba brings to United
Baleba’s strongest documented qualities are defensive disruption and forward ball-carrying. His established performance record is largely from Brighton, so those figures describe the player United signed rather than a synchronized comparison with his new teammates.

Ball-winning and recovery
In a Premier League analysis published on 23 February 2025, Baleba had made 36 interceptions in the 2024/25 season, second among midfielders at that point despite having fewer starts than other leading players. Among midfielders with at least 15 starts in the same analysis, he ranked fourth for duels won per 90 (7.05) and ball recoveries per 90 (6.62). United’s profile adds a later season snapshot: it says Baleba made 31 Premier League appearances in 2025/26, ranked in the top eight per cent of players for combined tackles and interceptions, and in the top one per cent for second balls won. Carrying is a clearer strength than forward passing volume
Opta Analyst’s 2025 profile describes Baleba as composed when receiving under pressure, strong in possession and willing to turn and drive forward. In its defensive-midfielder comparison group, he recorded 6.3 progressive carries per 90; his 5.2 metres progressed per carry was bettered by only four nominal defensive midfielders. There is an important counterweight: only 23% of his passes in the cited 2024/25 sample were classified as forward. Opta Analyst notes that his progressive passes were long on average, but the evidence does not support describing him as a high-volume forward passer. The distinction is useful: Baleba can create territory through carries without necessarily being the midfielder who constantly progresses play by passing.

United’s submitted 2026/27 Premier League squad lists Baleba, Bruno Fernandes, Mason Mount, Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Manuel Ugarte as senior midfielders. Casemiro is context, not a current option
The Premier League’s 2025/26 analysis described Casemiro as the midfielder anchoring United, protecting the back four and contributing successful long-range distribution. In that source’s sample, United conceded a goal every 110.6 minutes with him on the pitch and every 31.54 minutes without him. This is an on/off association from a particular season, not proof that Casemiro alone caused the difference, and it should not be used to rank Baleba against a current United teammate. Manager Michael Carrick has said selection depends on combinations, the needs of a match, fixture frequency and availability, including injuries and suspensions. That is a better lens for this group than treating every player listed as a midfielder as a direct rival for one identical job. Carrick on squad combinations and multiple roles

- If the need is for the creativity and press resistance highlighted in United’s material, Mainoo offers a distinct on-ball emphasis.
- For Ugarte, Fernandes, Tielemans, Mount and Santos, the squad list establishes their status but not enough current role detail for a fair individual verdict here.
