Its stretch-and-recovery pitch may bring athletic gear to mind, but Carhartt’s published material does not show a direct comparison with athletic apparel. The collection page reviewed on October 7, 2026, listed six U.S. products; the strongest quantified toughness claim applies specifically to one bib overall, not the whole range.
What Carhartt means by Steel’s stretch-and-toughness pitch
Carhartt describes Steel as workwear with stretch and recovery intended to move with the wearer, plus protective overlays in high-wear areas. The company says its Rugged Flex technology adds stretch where needed for actions such as kneeling, bending and crouching. That is a functional mobility claim, not evidence that Steel performs like athletic apparel in a head-to-head test.

Carhartt’s collection page describes the range as having “stretch and recovery that bends and flexes with every move.” That is the company’s product framing, rather than an independently verified performance result. Its Rugged Flex page similarly says the technology is engineered to move and stretch with the wearer throughout the day: Carhartt Rugged Flex technology.

What the Braddock Bib Overall’s specifications show
The Steel Braddock Bib Overall, style 107860, is the product for which Carhartt provides detailed materials and a quantified abrasion-and-stretch comparison. Carhartt lists a relaxed fit and a 9.5-ounce shell made from 42% polyester, 41% cotton, 14% nylon and 3% elastane. It also lists 8-ounce stretch piecing made from 93% nylon and 7% elastane. Those exact fabric details are for style 107860; they should not be assumed to apply to every Steel garment.
Rank #2
- 80g, 100% Polyester Stretch Insulation in Back and Sleeve

Listed features include Wind Fighter technology, a durable water-repellent finish, reinforced high-wear overlay, adjustable waist and suspenders, double-layer knees and utility storage. Carhartt says this style is “4x more abrasion-resistant with 2x more stretch than stretch duck.” The product page specifies that those attributes apply only to style 107860. It does not provide a test protocol or independent validation, so treat the figures as Carhartt’s product claim rather than a verified comparison across the collection.

How to decide whether Steel fits your work
- Prioritize movement: The series is positioned around stretch and recovery. Consider whether the garment’s cut and stretch placement suit the bending, crouching or kneeling your work involves.
- Match reinforcement to wear: Carhartt identifies high-wear overlays across the Steel proposition; the bib overall specifically lists reinforced overlay and double-layer knees. Do not assume every style has the bib’s construction.
- Check the exact garment: Compare the product’s fit, fabric composition, pockets and reinforcement details with your needs. The bib overall’s relaxed fit and material percentages are not collection-wide specifications.
- Verify current details: Prices, size ranges and availability can change; consult the individual product listing before buying.
