The reliable way to choose a Carhartt jacket size is to measure your chest, compare that measurement with the chart for the exact jacket, and then account for the model’s fit label and the layers you will wear underneath. Carhartt’s men’s guide says to measure just under the arms and across the shoulder blades with the tape firm and level; if your chest falls between sizes, order the next size up. There is no evidence that every Carhartt jacket uses one identical cut, so a general alpha-size chart is a starting point rather than a substitute for the product-specific chart.
What size Carhartt jacket should you get?
Start with your actual body-chest measurement, not the size printed on a jacket you already own. Match that number to the current chart for the particular Carhartt jacket you are considering. The chart establishes the intended body measurement; the fit label describes the silhouette and available ease.
Carhartt men’s chest chart: the numbers and their limits
Carhartt’s Men’s Size and Fit Guide lists body measurements by alpha size. The chest figures below are chart values, not measurements of the finished jacket. They should be used with the exact product page because jacket patterns, size runs and fit labels vary.

The guide includes other columns and entries that may be unavailable or marked N/A. Do not manufacture a numeric conversion for a size the chart does not state, and do not treat the listed chest value as a garment measurement. A jacket with a 44-inch body-chest reference will not necessarily measure 44 inches around the finished garment because construction ease, insulation, lining and the intended silhouette affect the garment dimensions.
How to measure your chest accurately
1. Wear the right clothing
Carhartt recommends measuring over undergarments for the best result. Use a flexible cloth tape rather than a rigid ruler. Remove a bulky hoodie or jacket before measuring; extra clothing can move you into a larger chart size even when the jacket will normally be worn over a light base layer.
2. Position the tape
Stand naturally with your arms relaxed. Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, passing it just under your arms and across your shoulder blades. Carhartt’s guide describes the placement as: “Measure just under arms and across shoulder blades holding the tape firm and level.” Keep the tape parallel to the floor. It should touch the body without digging in or sagging.

3. Take more than one reading
Breathe normally and record the measurement at the end of a relaxed breath. Take a second reading after lowering your arms if the first number seems unusual. If the two readings differ, check that the tape has not slipped upward at the back or crossed at an angle. Use the larger reliable reading when deciding between adjacent chart sizes, particularly if you plan to wear a sweatshirt beneath the jacket.
4. Record the measurement in the chart’s units
The men’s chart is presented in inches. If your tape shows centimetres, convert the result before comparing it, and keep the converted number to one decimal place rather than rounding down at a size boundary. A chest that is very close to the next size should be treated cautiously because normal measuring variation can be enough to change the recommendation.

A step-by-step sizing decision
- Measure your chest. Follow the underarm-and-shoulder-blade method above over the undergarments you normally wear.
- Open the exact jacket’s current product page. Locate its size chart and confirm that the size you are considering is actually offered. A general men’s guide cannot establish the complete size run for every model.
- Match the body measurement. Compare your chest with the chart’s body measurements, not with a flat measurement from another garment.
- Size up when you fall between sizes. This is Carhartt’s stated instruction for the men’s guide: choose the next size up rather than the smaller boundary size.
- Read the fit label. Relaxed fit and loose fit signal different amounts of ease and different proportions; they are not interchangeable names for one universal cut.
- Account for layers and movement. Decide whether the jacket will be worn over a shirt, a sweatshirt, insulated workwear or another substantial layer. Choose the size and silhouette that leave the movement you need without relying on an unverified assumption about every Carhartt pattern.
- Check length and availability. Chest is the primary chart measurement, but shoulder comfort, sleeve reach and body length can determine whether a jacket works for you. Confirm the available size and any length options on the exact listing.
Relaxed fit versus loose fit
Fit labels are useful only when read as descriptions of a silhouette. Carhartt’s men’s guide describes relaxed fit as closer to the body, while its loose-fit description indicates more ease, dropped shoulders, and longer sleeves and body length. Those cues help you predict how a jacket may look and move, but they do not create a universal rule such as “always buy one size smaller” or “always size up.”

How layering changes the choice
Light base layers
For a shirt or thin base layer, your measured chest is the most direct starting point. A closer silhouette may be comfortable if the shoulders and armholes allow normal movement. Check that you can reach forward and raise your arms without the hem riding up excessively.
Midweight sweatshirts
A sweatshirt adds thickness across the chest, upper back and arms. If your chest is on a chart boundary, Carhartt’s “order the next size up” instruction is especially relevant. If you are not on a boundary, use the exact model’s fit description to decide whether its existing ease is sufficient; do not automatically add a full size without checking how the jacket is intended to fit.
Work or cold-weather layers
Multiple layers require room for movement as well as circumference. A jacket can have enough chest room but still restrict the upper arms or shoulders when you reach, drive or lift. A loose-fit silhouette may provide more usable volume, while its longer sleeves and body may be undesirable if you need a shorter hem or have shorter arms. The product chart and fit notes should settle that trade-off for the model in question.

Using the chart for specific Carhartt jackets
Carhartt’s official jacket pages illustrate why model-level checking matters. The Re-Engineered Relaxed Fit Duck Detroit Jacket and the Camden Relaxed Fit Lightweight Softshell Jacket are both identified with a relaxed-fit label, yet the evidence available for this guide does not establish that all of their dimensions or construction details are identical. Treat each listing as its own sizing decision.

The official source available here is Carhartt’s men’s guide. It should not be used as a precise women’s jacket recommendation. Women’s jackets need to be checked against the size chart for the specific women’s product, including its stated fit label and available sizes.
Do not convert a women’s size to a men’s alpha size by simply matching a chest number unless the women’s product page explicitly provides that relationship. Women’s patterns can use different shoulder, bust, waist and hip proportions, and the evidence does not establish one universal cross-line conversion. Measure according to the women’s chart and use the product’s own instructions.
Common fit problems and what to check
The chest closes, but the shoulders bind
Recheck the tape position and then inspect the model’s shoulder and sleeve proportions. A larger size may add unwanted body volume without solving a pattern that does not suit your shoulder shape. The jacket feels too roomy through the body
First confirm that you selected the intended fit label. Loose fit is described as having more ease, dropped shoulders and longer sleeves and length, so it can feel substantially roomier than a relaxed-fit jacket in the same alpha size. If your chest measurement is correct, changing to a closer silhouette may be more appropriate than automatically dropping a size.
Sleeves are short when the chest fits
Check whether the model offers a different length or whether its fit description specifies longer sleeves. Do not use a larger chest size solely to gain sleeve length unless the added body volume is acceptable. Ask the seller or manufacturer for the exact sleeve measurement if the product page does not provide it.
The jacket is tight only with a sweatshirt
Measure again over the undergarments Carhartt recommends, then evaluate the layer combination you actually intend to use. If your chest falls between chart sizes, choose the next size up as Carhartt directs. If it does not, compare a roomier fit label or a model designed for the intended layering rather than assuming a universal one-size increase.
The chart does not list your needed size
Do not extrapolate from the nearest number or substitute a different model’s chart. Check the exact listing for unavailable or N/A entries, then look for another size run or model whose chart explicitly covers your measurement. A missing chart value is not evidence that the garment will fit.

Carhartt’s men’s guide provides a measurement method, a set of listed alpha-size chest values and fit descriptions. It does not establish that every retail jacket shares one cut, that every customer should size up, or that a particular model will fit every body proportion. Use the official Carhartt Company Gear Fit and Size Guide as supporting measurement and fit information, while remembering that it is a company-gear guide rather than a complete fit test of every retail jacket. For a purchase decision, the exact product chart remains the controlling reference.
A practical example
Example 1: measurement exactly on a listed value
Suppose your measured chest is 40 inches and the jacket’s chart includes the men’s M value of 40 inches. Start with M, then check whether the model is relaxed or loose and whether your planned layer needs more room. The number alone does not prove that M will provide the sleeve length or shoulder mobility you need.
Example 2: measurement between listed values
Suppose your chest is 41 inches, between the chart’s 40-inch M and 44-inch L values. Carhartt’s men’s guide says to order the next size up, so L is the stated choice. Confirm that the model offers L and that its additional body and sleeve length are acceptable for your proportions.

If you are choosing a women’s model, do not apply the men’s 40-inch M value as a direct recommendation. Find the women’s product chart, measure according to its instructions and use that chart’s own size labels and fit description.
