Yes—according to Nora Rowland’s account in Law&Crime’s September 30, 2026 report, a caregiver told her through a Ring doorbell that her 75-year-old father, Robert Rowland, had died three days earlier. Separately, arrest-warrant allegations reported by Law&Crime say the caregiver obtained a deed to Rowland’s Conway, South Carolina home for $5. The reports do not establish that the allegations have been proven.
What the daughter says happened at the doorbell
Nora Rowland told WMBF, in an account later quoted by Law&Crime, that she and her father usually FaceTimed each week. She said she heard from him less often after care began, became worried, and drove from Maryland to check on him in Conway, South Carolina.
According to Nora’s recollection as published by Law&Crime on September 30, 2026—not independently verified audio—the caregiver spoke through the Ring doorbell and said: “This isn’t the way that I wanted to tell you, but your dad died, and there’s a bunch of other stuff I have to tell you too. Just wait there.” Nora said her father had died three days earlier.
The earlier WMBF report, published August 30, 2026, says Nora and her partner were initially handcuffed after the caregiver called police and alleged they had broken in and were trespassing. The report says trespass charges were later dropped. That account predates the later report of the caregiver’s arrest.

What the $5 deed and financial allegations involve
Law&Crime’s September 30, 2026 report says arrest warrants allege that Sarah Smalls, 58, obtained power of attorney for Robert Rowland, withdrew more than $17,000 in cash, and obtained a deed to his home dated April 17, 2024. The report says the home was transferred for $5 and alleges that Smalls had her sister notarize the deed.
The same report says bank statements reviewed by WMBF showed transfers from Rowland to Smalls. It also describes allegations about federal documents submitted to the Housing Authority of Conway. These are allegations reported through warrants, records, and news coverage; they are not findings that the conduct was theft or that the deed was invalid.

What is known about the criminal case
Law&Crime reported on September 30, 2026, that Smalls had been booked on charges of perjury, breach of trust, and exploitation of a vulnerable adult, and released on bond. An arrest and criminal charges are not proof of guilt. The reports reviewed here do not establish the ultimate criminal or civil outcome.
The August 30 WMBF report said Conway police were investigating at that time. The later arrest report is the more current procedural update available in these accounts.

Why a recorded deed is not a ruling on fairness
In the August 30, 2026 Law&Crime report, Horry County registrar of deeds Marion Foxworth III explained the office’s recording role: “If it contains all the correct information to meet the legal standard, then we record it. We don’t check whether what’s in that deed is fair or right.” That is his description of the recording process, not a ruling about this deed’s validity or the circumstances of the transfer.

Law&Crime quoted Griswold Care Pairing for Myrtle Beach as saying Smalls had passed required background checks before referral and that the company took the allegations seriously and was cooperating with law-enforcement or regulatory inquiries. The company’s statement does not resolve the allegations or establish what happened to Rowland’s property.
