Police had recovered three solar-system batteries, about 1 kg of carbide and firecracker-related material from debris at a house in Malwan, Fatehpur district, by October 2, 2026. Those finds have not established what caused the blast: investigators were still considering several possibilities, and part of the house had yet to be examined.
What police reported finding in the debris
Hindustan Times reported on October 2 that investigators recovered three batteries linked to the house’s solar system, two of them described as burst, along with about 1 kg of carbide and material associated with making firecrackers. The batteries were found on the ground floor. Their role in the explosion was unclear.
Finding an item at the scene does not establish that it caused the blast. The recovered material was part of the investigation, not a final forensic explanation.
What may have caused the Fatehpur blast?
As of reports published through October 2, police had not announced a confirmed cause. Investigators were considering LPG, carbide-related gas, batteries and firecracker-related material, including the possibility that more than one factor was involved. The available reporting does not establish a causal sequence or rank these possibilities.

Fatehpur Superintendent of Police Abhimanyu Manglik was quoted as saying that the batteries, carbide and a possible spark from firecracker material “may have caused the explosion.” He added that the situation would become clearer after more debris was removed. This was a conditional investigative hypothesis, not a final forensic conclusion.
LPG cylinder or leak
On September 29, The Times of India reported that investigators had collected cylinder and regulator fragments for laboratory examination. An unnamed senior officer said preliminary circumstantial evidence suggested a cylinder explosion, while the precise cause remained to be determined. The October 2 report said LPG cylinders were believed to have been kept in the second-floor kitchen, which had not yet been examined.

Carbide and a possible ignition source
Amar Ujala reported on October 1 that carbide-related gas was among the possibilities being considered. A chemistry lecturer described how calcium carbide can react with moisture to form acetylene, a flammable gas; in an enclosed space, a gas build-up and an ignition source could present an explosion risk. That general chemical explanation does not show that such a reaction occurred at this house.
Batteries and firecracker-related material
The recovered batteries and firecracker-making material were also being considered as possible factors, according to the October 2 report. Their presence alone does not prove that either was involved. Fatehpur SP Abhimanyu Manglik had earlier said there was no firecracker factory operating at the site and urged people not to spread that rumor, Amar Ujala reported on October 1.

What remained to be examined
By October 2, investigators had removed roughly 80% of the debris, according to Hindustan Times, but the second-floor kitchen still awaited examination. The remaining debris and the laboratory examination of collected fragments could inform the inquiry; the reporting available by that date did not include final results.
Casualties and damage
Reports said five people died. The blast caused major damage to the house and damaged nearby homes. Hindustan Times reported on October 2 that a woman was injured and the house’s owner was in serious condition.
