The screenshot is saved by the Python client as a PNG of the browser’s current window; check the method’s return value and use a path the client can write to.
What you need before capturing
- A running Selenium Grid endpoint that can create a session for the browser you request.
- Selenium’s Python package installed in the environment running your script.
- The Grid URL and browser options matching a browser available on that Grid.
- A destination path writable by the Python client process. The browser runs remotely, but
save_screenshot()writes the screenshot through the client’s WebDriver session.
Selenium Grid routes WebDriver commands from the client to remote browser instances, which can be useful for running tests across browsers, versions, or platforms. See the official Selenium Grid overview.
Capture a screenshot with Python
For a local learning setup, Selenium’s getting-started guide describes Standalone mode at http://localhost:4444. Replace that endpoint with the URL of your Grid when running elsewhere.
- Start Grid and confirm it is reachable at the endpoint you intend to use.
- Install Selenium in the Python environment that will run the script.
- Set the remote endpoint and browser options, navigate to the page, and save the screenshot.

Selenium’s Remote WebDriver guide explains the remote address and browser options required to create a session. Choose the capture size and output form
Set the browser window size
If the viewport dimensions matter, set the window size before capturing. For example:

driver.save_screenshot("screenshot.png")The dimensions are the browser window dimensions requested through WebDriver; do not assume this method produces a full-page image. The documented screenshot method captures the current window. See the Python API reference for set_window_size(width, height) and screenshot methods.

Save a file or retrieve image data
Use save_screenshot(path) when you want a PNG file written by the Python client. If you need the screenshot data in memory instead, Selenium also documents get_screenshot_as_png() for PNG bytes and get_screenshot_as_base64() for Base64-encoded content. These are alternatives for handling the current screenshot; they do not change which browser window is captured.
Remote screenshot files are not browser downloads
A screenshot saved with driver.save_screenshot() follows the WebDriver screenshot command and is written to a path available to the Python client. Browser downloads are a separate Grid feature with their own remote-filesystem behavior and managed-download configuration. You do not need to enable managed downloads just to save a WebDriver screenshot. See Selenium’s managed downloads documentation.

Troubleshoot common failures
Cannot connect to the Grid endpoint
Check that Grid is running and that command_executor points to its reachable URL. For a local Standalone setup, the documented default endpoint is http://localhost:4444; a container or remote host may require a different address. See the Grid getting-started guide.
Grid cannot create the requested session
Make sure the browser options correspond to a browser and capabilities available on the Grid. The remote session depends on Grid being able to match the requested browser capabilities; consult the deployment and setup guidance for your Grid topology in the official getting-started guide.

The screenshot file is missing or empty
Check the value returned by save_screenshot(). If it is False, verify the destination directory exists and the Python client process can write there. A path on the remote browser machine is not automatically a path on the Python client machine.
The screenshot shows the wrong size or only part of a page
Set the window dimensions before capture and confirm that the target page has loaded to the state you need. The standard method captures the current window, not a guaranteed full-page image; the cited API documentation does not establish full-page capture through this method.
