For Ubuntu, the fonts-noto-core package is one option; Ubuntu Jammy’s package manifest includes Noto Sans Tamil regular and bold. The exact install command depends on your distribution and release.
What you need before taking the screenshot
- A Go project with the
chromedpmodule. - Chrome or Chromium available to the process. Chromedp controls the browser through the Chrome DevTools Protocol; its README also identifies chromedp/headless-shell as an option for headless environments.
- A Tamil-capable font installed where that browser runs. A font installed on your laptop will not automatically be present in a separate CI runner or container.
- A URL and a decision about whether the output should show an element, the current viewport, or the full page.
For Ubuntu Jammy, the fonts-noto-core package manifest lists NotoSansTamil-Regular.ttf and NotoSansTamil-Bold.ttf. This establishes that those files are in that package for Jammy, not that every site will use them or render every Tamil page identically. Check the package and installation instructions for your target distribution and release before adopting a command.

Choose the screenshot bounds
| Chromedp action | What it captures | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
chromedp.Screenshot |
A selected DOM element. | You need a particular element rather than the whole page. |
chromedp.CaptureScreenshot |
The current browser viewport. | You want only what is visible in the browser window. |
chromedp.FullScreenshot |
The page beyond the viewport. | The page is taller than the visible window and you need a full-page image. |
The chromedp API documentation describes FullScreenshot as capturing the full page and setting capture beyond the viewport. With quality 100, it produces PNG; other values in the documented 0–100 range select JPEG. The official chromedp examples demonstrate element and full-page captures.
Install a Tamil font in the browser runtime
Ubuntu Jammy example
On Ubuntu Jammy, install the package in the host, container image, or CI environment that launches Chromium:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -y fonts-noto-core
The package manifest confirms that this package includes Noto Sans Tamil regular and bold files for Jammy. If you use another Ubuntu release or Linux distribution, verify its package name and contents rather than assuming this command applies unchanged.
Check the actual execution environment
- Identify the operating system and release of the machine or container that starts Chromium.
- Install a Tamil-capable font package in that environment, not only on your development workstation.
- Run the screenshot program in the same environment and inspect the resulting image for missing-glyph boxes or unexpected fallback typography.
- If the page loads its own web font, wait for that font to load as well; installing a system font alone does not guarantee the page will use it.
Font availability is only one part of rendering. A page’s CSS font stack, web-font loading, browser version, and page content can affect the result. Confirm the output against the specific page and runtime you deploy.

Capture a full-page screenshot in Go
Add chromedp to the project with go get github.com/chromedp/chromedp. The following complete program navigates to a URL, waits for the document load event, captures the full page as PNG, and writes the bytes to tamil-page.png:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
package main
import (
"context"
"log"
"os"
"github.com/chromedp/chromedp"
)
func main() {
ctx, cancel := chromedp.NewContext(context.Background())
defer cancel()
var image []byte
err := chromedp.Run(ctx,
chromedp.Navigate("https://example.com"),
chromedp.FullScreenshot(&image, 100),
)
if err != nil {
log.Fatal(err)
}
if err := os.WriteFile("tamil-page.png", image, 0644); err != nil {
log.Fatal(err)
}
}
Replace https://example.com with the page you need. Chromedp runs Chrome in headless mode by default according to its README; the browser executable still needs to be available to the program. For a headless deployment, the README points to chromedp/headless-shell, but does not establish one image tag as correct for every environment. Pin a version appropriate to your deployment if using a container image.
Wait for the page state you actually need
A navigation load event is a useful baseline, not a universal signal that a page’s JavaScript, lazy content, or web fonts have finished. If the target has a stable selector that appears after rendering, add a selector wait before the screenshot. For example, insert chromedp.WaitVisible("main", chromedp.ByQuery) after navigation when the page’s main content is the relevant readiness signal. Choose a selector that matches the page; no single wait guarantees readiness for every site.
Save a viewport or element instead
For a viewport screenshot, use chromedp.CaptureScreenshot(&image) in place of the full-page action. For an element, use chromedp.Screenshot with the element selector, as shown in the official examples. These produce different bounds: changing the action changes what part of the page is captured.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. The request below saves a WebP image; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for configuration details.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemscurl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners as a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and each response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Troubleshooting missing or incorrect Tamil text
Tamil appears as boxes or blank glyphs
- Likely cause: Chromium cannot find a suitable Tamil font in its runtime.
- Fix: Install a Tamil-capable package in the same host or container that runs the browser, then recapture there. For Ubuntu Jammy,
fonts-noto-coreincludes Noto Sans Tamil files in its manifest.
It works locally but fails in CI
- Likely cause: The local machine has fonts that the CI image does not.
- Fix: Add the font package to the CI image or setup step and verify the screenshot from that runner. Check the runner’s distribution and release first.
Some text or images are missing from the capture
- Likely cause: The page has not finished rendering when the screenshot action runs; navigation completion alone may not cover asynchronous content or web-font loading.
- Fix: Wait for a page-specific selector or other relevant readiness condition before capturing. The correct condition depends on the target site.
The image ends at the viewport
- Likely cause: The capture action is limited to the visible browser viewport.
- Fix: Use
chromedp.FullScreenshotwhen you need the page beyond the viewport, orchromedp.Screenshotfor a specific element.
The output format is not PNG
- Likely cause:
FullScreenshotselects JPEG for quality values other than 100. - Fix: Use quality
100for PNG, or keep a non-100 quality when JPEG is the intended format.
Reliability and cost considerations
For repeatable captures, keep the browser environment, font installation, and page-readiness condition consistent between development and deployment. Browser availability, package contents, and image tags vary by operating system and release, so validate the exact target environment. A screenshot can be technically successful while still showing fallback fonts or an unfinished page; inspect representative output rather than treating a successful Go call as proof of correct Tamil rendering.
With chromedp, the work runs in your browser environment, so you manage the browser and its dependencies. ScreenshotNeo is a hosted alternative with the plans and billing behavior described above; its API base is screenshotneo.com. Choose between them based on whether you want to manage Chromium and fonts yourself or send a request to a screenshot service.
