Capitec’s Non-Bank Businesses Are Driving a Growing Share of Earnings

Capitec’s latest interim results show that businesses beyond Personal Banking contributed 56% of group headline earnings: Fintech accounted for 29% and Insurance for 27% in the six months ended 31 August 2026. The company reported group headline earnings of R9.5 billion, up 19% year on year. Those figures point to a more diversified earnings mix, but they do not show that these businesses operate independently of Capitec’s banking platform or guarantee that their growth will last.

How much of Capitec’s growth comes from outside Personal Banking?

Capitec’s interim-results announcement allocates group headline earnings across four businesses. Fintech and Insurance together represented 56% of the total, compared with 53% in the company’s full-year FY2026 announcement. Personal Banking remained the largest individual contributor in the interim period, at 37%.

Business Six months ended 31 August 2026 Year ended 28 February 2026
Personal Banking 37% of group headline earnings, Capitec interim results 41%, Capitec FY2026 results announcement
Fintech 29%, Capitec interim results 26%, Capitec FY2026 results announcement
Insurance 27%, Capitec interim results 27%, Capitec FY2026 results announcement
Business Banking 6%, Capitec interim results 5%, Capitec FY2026 results announcement

The periods are not directly interchangeable: the latest figures cover six months, while the FY2026 figures cover a full year. The annual announcement’s allocations total 99%, likely because of rounding; Capitec published them as shown, and they should not be adjusted to force a 100% total.

For the interim period, Capitec reported net non-interest income of R16.1 billion, up 21% year on year. It said this represented 70% of income from operations after credit impairments, versus 65% in the prior-year interim period. In FY2026, the company reported a 67% share for non-interest income on the same stated basis. These are indicators of the group’s income mix, not the same measure as each business’s share of headline earnings.

What Capitec includes in Fintech

Capitec groups Value-Added Services (VAS) and Capitec Connect under Fintech. VAS covers everyday transactions and purchases such as prepaid airtime, data, electricity, vouchers and bill payments. Capitec reported VAS income of R3.5 billion for the six months ended 31 August 2026, up 30% year on year.

Capitec Connect’s reported usage

Capitec said Capitec Connect had 1.8 million clients active over the three months before the end of the interim period, compared with 1.1 million in the equivalent prior-year period. Reported data usage rose from 14.9 million to 34.3 million gigabytes, while voice usage increased 84% year on year. The company also said it launched free Capitec-to-Capitec calls and that clients used 70 million free minutes during the period. These are company-reported activity figures, not independent measures of customer retention or profitability.

The announcement reports Fintech net income of R2.7 billion, up 30%, and Fintech income of R3.8 billion. They are separate reported measures; neither should be substituted for the other or treated as interchangeable. The interim segment allocation of 29% refers instead to Fintech’s share of group headline earnings.

Insurance earnings and policy activity

Capitec reported Insurance headline earnings of R2.5 billion, up 22% year on year, and a net insurance result of R3.0 billion, up 28%. It attributed the performance to Credit Life and Funeral Cover.

The company reported 2.2 million active Credit Life policies and 3.8 million active funeral policies covering more than 17 million lives. These are Capitec’s counts; they describe reported policy activity and coverage, not the number of distinct customers or an independently verified market total.

What the figures establish—and what they do not

The results establish that Capitec is generating substantial earnings and income from Fintech and Insurance alongside Personal Banking. They also show year-on-year growth in the reported VAS and insurance measures and increased reported activity on Capitec Connect. Together, the 56% interim earnings allocation and the 70% non-interest-income share help explain why the company presents itself as diversified.

But segment allocations do not by themselves establish how much growth is recurring, how profitable each activity will be through a full cycle, or whether those activities could thrive without the bank’s customers, distribution and broader platform. Nor should non-interest income be read as income exclusively from businesses separate from banking. Capitec described the results as evidence of a diversified business built over decades on simplicity, affordability, accessibility and a personalised experience; that is the company’s explanation, not independent proof of future durability.

For full-year context, Capitec’s audited results for the year ended 28 February 2026 reported headline earnings of R16.848 billion, up 23%. The interim figures discussed here are for the six months ended 31 August 2026 and were issued as interim results, not audited full-year results.
