Can’t Sign In With a Microsoft Account in Windows 10? Fix Password, PIN, and Profile Errors

The right fix depends on what Windows 10 is rejecting: your Microsoft account password, a device-specific Windows Hello PIN or biometric method, or the Windows user profile that loads after authentication. Restart first, connect to the internet, select Sign-in options, and then follow the branch that matches your symptom.

Before changing passwords or profiles

  1. Restart the PC instead of repeatedly retrying the credential.
  2. Confirm that the correct account tile is selected.
  3. Check the keyboard layout, Caps Lock, and Num Lock on the sign-in screen.
  4. Connect to Wi-Fi from the sign-in screen if available.
  5. Select Sign-in options and make sure you are using the intended method: password, PIN, fingerprint, face, or security key.
  6. If you recently changed your Microsoft password online, enter the new password. The old password may remain cached only temporarily, and the PC may need internet access to validate the change.

Do not keep guessing. Microsoft lists excessive attempts, device, app, browser, and network conditions among possible causes of sign-in errors: Microsoft account sign-in error guidance.

Password is forgotten or rejected everywhere Microsoft account authentication Use I forgot my password or Microsoft account recovery.
Password works in a browser, but Windows rejects it Wrong sign-in method, account tile, network, alias, or cached credentials Connect to the internet and choose Sign-in options > Password.
PIN is forgotten or no longer accepted Windows Hello PIN Choose I forgot my PIN, or use the password fallback.

Microsoft distinguishes online account authentication, Windows sign-in methods, and the local profile Windows loads afterward. See user account access and Windows sign-in options.

If you forgot your Microsoft account password

Reset it from the Windows 10 sign-in screen

  1. Select the Microsoft account tile.
  2. Select I forgot my password.
  3. Choose a listed recovery email address or phone number.
  4. Enter the verification code Microsoft sends you.
  5. Create a new password.
  6. Return to the sign-in screen and use the new password.

If the recovery address or phone is unavailable, use Microsoft’s Sign-in Helper and, when offered, the account-recovery form. Microsoft requires identity verification before resetting a personal account password. Detailed instructions are in Microsoft’s forgotten-password guide and Windows password-reset guidance.

Changing the password can sign out OneDrive, Store apps, email clients, and other applications; sign in to those again after you regain access.

If your Windows Hello PIN is not working

A Windows Hello PIN is device-specific. It is not the same as your Microsoft account password.

Reset the PIN at the sign-in screen

  1. Select I forgot my PIN.
  2. Choose the Microsoft account if Windows asks which account to reset.
  3. Complete identity verification.
  4. Create a new PIN and try again.

The reset may require internet access. If I forgot my PIN is missing, select Sign-in options, choose the password icon, and sign in with the Microsoft account password. Once inside Windows, open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options, select PIN (Windows Hello), and change or reset it. This sign-in-screen PIN reset is intended for Microsoft accounts; local accounts follow different recovery rules. See Microsoft’s PIN instructions.

If the password works online but Windows rejects it

  1. On another device, verify the password at Microsoft’s account sign-in page.
  2. At the Windows 10 sign-in screen, connect the PC to the internet.
  3. Select the correct account tile.
  4. Choose Sign-in options > Password, not the PIN or biometric icon.
  5. Enter the complete password, including the correct account alias.
  6. If it still fails, select I forgot my password or use the Sign-in Helper.

Microsoft account aliases share one password, but the identifier still must belong to the correct account. See how to sign in to a Microsoft account and Microsoft’s sign-in troubleshooting page.

If fingerprint or face sign-in fails

  1. Select Sign-in options.
  2. Use the password or PIN fallback.
  3. After signing in, open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
  4. Remove and reconfigure Windows Hello.
  5. Check the camera or fingerprint reader and its driver.

On a work- or school-managed PC, policy or hardware restrictions may prevent changes. Windows Hello is only a device sign-in method; it does not recover a lost Microsoft account.

“We can’t sign in to your account” or a temporary profile

This message usually indicates that Windows could not load your user profile. It does not by itself prove that your Microsoft account password is invalid.

Protect files before troubleshooting

A temporary profile can look empty, and Microsoft warns that files created or changed there may be lost when you sign out. Copy any files created during the temporary session to external storage immediately. Do not reset Windows, delete the old profile, or save important work there.

Restart and test Safe Mode

  1. Restart the PC and try the original account again.
  2. At the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart.
  3. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  4. Press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode, or 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
  5. Test the account, then restart normally.

Safe Mode is diagnostic, not a guaranteed repair. If the problem disappears there, a startup service, driver, security product, or other nonessential component is a likely suspect. See Windows Startup Settings.

Check security software cautiously

Microsoft’s temporary-profile guidance discusses security software as a possible factor. If you test a third-party antivirus product, disconnect from untrusted networks if appropriate, disable it only briefly, re-enable protection immediately, and prefer updating or uninstalling the problematic product. Do not leave Microsoft Defender or other protection disabled.

Create a replacement profile when the old one is damaged

  1. Create a new local administrator account.
  2. Sign in to that account.
  3. Copy personal files from C:Users<Old_Username> to C:Users<New_Username>.
  4. Copy personal folders selectively; do not blindly copy hidden or protected system files.
  5. Verify documents, photos, and other data before deleting or abandoning the old profile.
  6. Convert the new local account to a Microsoft account if desired.
  7. Reinstall or reconfigure applications. Email data, Store sign-ins, and application settings may need separate restoration.

Microsoft’s detailed instructions are in Fix a corrupted user profile and the temporary-profile error guide.

Personal Microsoft account or work/school account?

Personal accounts commonly use Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live, MSN, or another address registered as a personal Microsoft account. Work or school accounts are managed through an organization’s Microsoft Entra ID or Microsoft 365 environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a work or school account, contact the organization’s IT administrator and use its password-reset process. Domain, Entra, Group Policy, and conditional-access requirements can change the available sign-in methods. Do not use personal-account recovery as the primary fix for an organization-managed account.

When Microsoft cannot verify your identity

  1. Try the Sign-in Helper.
  2. Submit Microsoft’s account-recovery form when offered.
  3. Provide accurate historical information rather than repeated guesses.
  4. Check known aliases and spelling.

Microsoft support agents cannot bypass account security, retrieve a lost password, send a reset link on your behalf, or change protected account details. Do not pay anyone claiming to bypass Microsoft verification.

If Windows says the account no longer exists

  • Check the spelling of the email address.
  • Try known account aliases.
  • Confirm whether it is a personal or work/school account.
  • Use Microsoft’s username lookup and Sign-in Helper.
  • Microsoft says a personal account inactive for more than two years may have been deleted and cannot be reopened.

Last-resort Windows recovery

Only consider recovery after copying accessible files and checking for BitLocker recovery information. System Restore, Windows Recovery Environment, an in-place repair, or Reset this PC can remove applications, settings, or data depending on the option selected. A clean installation is the final option, not the first response to a forgotten password, broken PIN, or profile error. If the PC belongs to an employer or school, consult IT before creating accounts or changing security settings.

Windows 10 support status

Windows 10 general support ended on October 14, 2025. The operating system still runs, but ordinary installations no longer receive free technical assistance, feature updates, or security updates. Microsoft references consumer Extended Security Updates for eligible devices through October 12, 2027, subject to edition, region, enrollment, and current program terms. Microsoft 365 Apps security updates on Windows 10 are referenced through October 10, 2028. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 lifecycle notice. Resolve the sign-in problem and back up your data before planning a Windows 11 upgrade or replacement PC.
