Can’t See Featured Apps in the Microsoft Store App? Causes and Fixes

If the Featured Apps section is missing from Microsoft Store, there is usually no hidden carousel switch to turn on. Store content is assembled according to your Microsoft account, country or region, family-safety settings, device compatibility, Store and Windows update state, and any work or school policies applied to the device.

Work through the checks below in order. Start with account, updates, region, and compatibility; use Repair or Reset only after those checks; and involve an administrator when the computer is managed.

What a missing Featured Apps section usually means

Microsoft Store does not document a separate setting that restores a Featured Apps carousel. A blank recommendation area, missing categories, or a Store page that shows fewer apps is generally a sign that Store has filtered or failed to load content rather than a feature that has been manually disabled.

The scope of the symptom is useful. If one title cannot be found, availability, compatibility, or a listing problem is more likely. If recommendations, categories, and featured content are all absent, account, region, update, Store-package, network, or policy conditions deserve attention. The Store can also appear different on Windows 10 and Windows 11, so compare the behavior with the interface and version installed on your PC.

Check the account and whether Store is available

Sign in with the intended Microsoft account

Open Microsoft Store and select the account icon in the upper-right corner. Confirm that it is the Microsoft account you normally use for Store apps and purchases. If the account menu offers a sign-in option, sign in, then close and reopen Store.

Microsoft says Store may not be available when Windows is being used only with a local account. A local Windows sign-in and a Microsoft account used by Store are different things, so being able to sign in to Windows does not prove that Store has an account session. If the Store app itself is missing, search for Microsoft Store from Start. When it cannot be found, Microsoft recommends using Feedback Hub to report the absence.

Rule out a disabled Store app

On a work or school computer, an administrator may have disabled Microsoft Store or restricted packaged apps. In that situation, changing your personal account, reinstalling Store, or resetting Windows will not legitimately override the policy. Ask your organization’s IT administrator whether Store is allowed for your device and user group.

Verify country, region, and family settings

Country or region availability

Microsoft’s support guidance states: “The app isn’t available in your country or region. Not all apps are available worldwide.” A developer can publish an app, promotion, or recommendation only in selected markets. Moving Windows to another country can also make apps that were previously visible disappear.

Check Settings > Time & language > Language & region in Windows 11, or the equivalent Settings > Time & Language > Region page in Windows 10. Make sure the country or region reflects where you actually live and use the device. Do not switch regions simply to force a listing: availability, licensing, billing, and account rules can change with the region, and a temporary change may create additional Store problems.

Family-safety restrictions

Family settings can hide apps by age rating or category. If a child account is involved, the family organizer should review the Microsoft family settings associated with that account. A parent-controlled account may correctly omit apps that an unrestricted adult account can see, so test with the permitted account rather than assuming the Store is broken.

Update Windows and Microsoft Store before repairing anything

Install pending Windows updates and restart

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates, install available updates, and allow any required restart.
  3. If the Featured Apps area disappeared after a recent update, restart the PC even when Windows does not insist on it. Microsoft specifically recommends restarting after a recent Windows update before trying Store troubleshooting again.

A restart clears a partially completed update, refreshes Store services, and reloads account and package registrations. It is reversible and should come before a reset or command-line repair.

Update Store itself in Windows 11

  1. Open Microsoft Store.
  2. Select Library from the left side.
  3. Select Get updates and let Store finish updating its apps and components.
  4. Close Store completely, reopen it, and check the Home page and category pages.

On Windows 10, Store’s layout can place library and update controls differently, but the objective is the same: install Store updates, close the app, and launch it again. If Store will not load far enough to reach its library, continue with the Windows app repair steps below.

Check whether the device can use the missing apps

Store can hide or block apps that are incompatible with a device. Compatibility can involve the Windows edition or version, processor architecture, required hardware, supported features, or an app’s minimum operating-system build. A device may therefore show fewer featured items than another PC in the same household.

Use the app’s product page, when you can open it through search or a direct listing, to look for a compatibility message. Compare the Windows version under Settings > System > About and confirm that Windows Update is current. If only a particular app is absent while other Store content works, compatibility or regional publishing is more likely than a Store-wide failure.

Repair and reset the Microsoft Store app

Repair first

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11. In Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
  2. Find Microsoft Store, open its advanced options, and select Repair.
  3. Launch Store again and check whether Home, categories, and recommendations return.

Repair attempts to correct the app without removing its data. It is the safer first intervention after updates and account checks.

Reset only if Repair fails

  1. Return to the Microsoft Store advanced options page.
  2. Select Reset and confirm.
  3. Open Store, sign in again if prompted, and allow its content to reload.

Reset is more disruptive than Repair because it clears the app’s stored data and session state. It does not change your Windows region or an administrator’s policy, so those causes must still be addressed separately.

Diagnose a managed work or school device

Microsoft Learn documents AppLocker and Group Policy controls that can block packaged apps. A policy may affect the Store app itself, a specific package, or an entire class of applications. The visible symptom can look like a missing Featured Apps panel even though the underlying cause is intentional management.

  • Check whether the PC is connected to a work or school account under Settings > Accounts > Access work or school.
  • Ask the administrator whether Microsoft Store is enabled for your device and account.
  • Ask whether AppLocker rules or Group Policy restrict packaged applications or Store updates.
  • Provide the exact symptom, Windows version, account type, and time the content disappeared.

Do not attempt to bypass organizational controls. An administrator can confirm the policy, adjust it if appropriate, or explain why Store content is intentionally limited.

Advanced package-level recovery

Use these steps only when ordinary Store troubleshooting fails and you understand which package is affected. Broad, guessed commands can damage app registrations or create a second problem. Create a restore point or follow your organization’s change process before making package changes.

Collect evidence first

Record whether the problem affects one app or all Store content, whether another account on the same PC sees Featured Apps, and whether the behavior changes after a restart. For persistent failures, Microsoft Learn recommends reviewing relevant AppX deployment and AppModel event logs. These logs can show registration, installation, licensing, or policy errors that the Store interface does not explain.

Check AppX registration

An administrator can inspect whether the affected package is registered for the relevant user. The package name and installation path must come from the system; do not substitute a guessed name. If registration is damaged, Microsoft Learn documents re-registering an AppX package with Add-AppxPackage. The command must point to the correct package manifest, and it should be run only with instructions appropriate to that package and Windows version.

Reset an affected package

For a package that supports it, Microsoft Learn also documents Reset-AppxPackage. This is a package-level operation, not a general fix for every Store problem. Apply it to the identified affected package, expect its local app data to be cleared, and avoid running it indiscriminately across all installed apps.

Use Windows Package Manager when Store delivery is damaged

Windows Package Manager can search for a package and install it when the Store listing or local registration is damaged. In an elevated or appropriately configured terminal, the documented workflow uses:

Replace the values with the exact result returned for the app you need. Check the publisher and package identity before installing, and remember that winget cannot override region licensing or an administrator’s policy.

Use the symptom to choose the next step

What you observe Most likely scope Best next check
Only one app is missing Region, family setting, compatibility, or listing availability Check the app page, account region, family restrictions, and device requirements
Featured Apps, recommendations, and categories are all blank Account session, Store update, app state, or policy Sign in, update Store, restart Windows, then Repair and Reset
Store is missing from Start Unavailable or disabled app Search Start, check the Microsoft account, and contact the administrator if managed
The issue began after a Windows update Pending restart or update-state problem Install all updates and restart before changing packages
Another user sees Store content on the same PC Account, family, or policy scope Compare account permissions, region, and organization assignments
All users see the same failure after repair and reset Package registration, Windows component, or policy issue Review AppX/AppModel logs and have an administrator follow package-registration guidance

What not to do

  • Do not assume a missing carousel has a hidden enable switch; Microsoft does not document one.
  • Do not change the country or region merely to obtain a recommendation or listing.
  • Do not repeatedly reset Store before checking account, family, compatibility, and policy causes.
  • Do not remove Windows security controls or bypass AppLocker on a managed PC.
  • Do not run broad AppX re-registration commands copied without identifying the affected package.
  • Do not treat a blank recommendation panel as proof that every Store app is unavailable; test search, a known listing, and another account where appropriate.

When to escalate

Contact your organization’s administrator when the device is managed, Store is intentionally restricted, or AppLocker and Group Policy may be involved. For a personal PC, escalate through Microsoft support or Feedback Hub when Store remains unavailable after account verification, Windows and Store updates, restart, region and family checks, Repair, and Reset. Include the Windows version, Store behavior, affected account, region, and any AppX or AppModel event errors so the problem can be diagnosed without repeating safe steps.
