The change took effect around December 13, 2024, so a missing Follow button on a hashtag page is usually expected behavior—not a fault with your phone or account. You can still search hashtags, open hashtag pages, and add hashtags to posts, but Instagram no longer treats hashtags like accounts that supply a subscription feed.
The change was reported as part of Instagram’s move away from hashtag-feed subscriptions and toward recommendations in Explore, Reels, Search and the main feed. Social Media Today reported Instagram’s announcement and timing.

Did Instagram remove the ability to follow hashtags?
Yes. Instagram removed the ability to follow hashtags, and hashtags that users had already followed stopped functioning as feed subscriptions. There is no documented privacy or feed setting that restores the old control.

Instagram linked the change to problems with spam and irrelevant hashtag posts. The exact interface can differ by account, device, region and app version, and some users may briefly see older controls during interface tests. That inconsistency does not mean hashtag following remains generally available.

This is different from a temporary outage. Reinstalling Instagram or clearing its cache can repair a broken page, but neither action brings back a product feature that Instagram has discontinued.
What you can still do with hashtags
Search for a hashtag
- Open Instagram and tap the Search icon.
- Enter the topic with or without the
#symbol. - Select the hashtag or a related result.
- Browse the posts, Reels, accounts or other result categories Instagram shows.
You can also tap a hashtag in a caption or comment. Instagram’s Help Center documents hashtag use and hashtag pages, while its hashtag-search guidance explains why some tags may not be searchable.
Add hashtags to your own posts
Hashtags still work in captions and comments. Instagram’s Help Center says public-account posts may appear on the corresponding hashtag page; posts from private accounts are not made publicly visible there. The same page documents a maximum of 30 hashtags on a photo or video, but treat that as the Help Center’s stated limit rather than a guarantee that every posting surface or region uses an identical limit. Hashtags can contain numbers, while spaces and some special characters break a hashtag.

What hashtags no longer do
Adding a hashtag does not let other users subscribe to it, and following a hashtag is no longer a way to receive its posts automatically in the main feed. Instagram also does not promise a universal chronological “Recent” or “Latest” hashtag feed.
How to get topic updates without hashtag following
Follow the accounts that consistently cover the topic
Search the subject, open useful posts, inspect the accounts behind them and follow the reliable creators, organizations or communities. This produces a more focused stream than an unrestricted hashtag page, although it can miss new or unknown accounts.
Use Instagram’s feed controls
Look for Following and Favorites in the feed controls. Following shows posts from accounts you follow, while Favorites gives selected accounts higher priority. Labels and menu placement vary. Meta describes these controls in its Newsroom.

Use Explore, Reels and Search deliberately
Instagram may recommend related content in Explore, Reels, feed recommendations, Search and suggested accounts. Recommendations are based partly on activity such as searches, views, likes, saves and follows. Instagram explains recommendation eligibility, but eligibility does not guarantee that a particular post will be recommended.

- Save posts and Reels that match the subject.
- Engage with accounts and topics you actually want more often.
- Use Not interested on irrelevant recommendations.
Instagram has also tested controls involving words, phrases and emojis in suggested content. Availability depends on the account, app version and region; Meta’s description of these controls is not a guarantee that every user will see the same options.
Choose a route for your goal

If a hashtag page will not load
A missing Follow button is expected. A page that will not open, a search that fails, or results that vanish can be a separate technical or moderation issue. Work through these checks:

- Check the spelling and try the hashtag with and without
#. - Try a different, established hashtag. A tag can be restricted, unavailable, newly created or affected by moderation.
- Test both Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Force-close and reopen Instagram, then restart the phone.
- Update Instagram and the phone’s operating system.
- Log out and back in.
- Reinstall Instagram if the page remains broken.
- Check whether the problem affects one account or several accounts.
- Use Instagram’s in-app option to report a technical problem.
These steps follow Instagram’s troubleshooting guidance. They can fix loading, connection or authentication failures, but cannot restore hashtag following.

Following a hashtag and following an account are separate features. If you cannot follow people from a hashtag page, open the account’s profile and try there. A private account may require approval.
Repeated follow failures, “We limit how often you can do certain things,” “Try again later,” errors when liking or commenting, or an Account Status warning can indicate a temporary action restriction, an account problem or a service bug. Stop repeated attempts, check Account Status, test another connection and complete the troubleshooting steps above. Do not diagnose a restriction solely because hashtag following is unavailable.

What the change means for creators
Creators can still place hashtags in captions and comments, and public posts may still be discoverable on hashtag pages. However, a hashtag is no longer a dependable subscription mechanism or a guaranteed route into followers’ feeds.
Use hashtags to describe the subject accurately, but build discovery around clear captions, relevant content, searchable wording, consistent publishing and direct audience relationships. Instagram’s documented hashtag functions do not establish that any particular number of hashtags guarantees reach, and recommendation eligibility is not a promise of distribution.
What not to try
- Do not trust apps claiming to restore Instagram’s old hashtag feed.
- Avoid follower-generator, scraping or follow/unfollow automation services.
- Never give your Instagram password to a tool that promises hashtag monitoring or a hidden re-enable switch.
- A browser may let you search Instagram, but it should not be presented as a way to subscribe to a hashtag.
The bottom line
The missing hashtag Follow button is usually intentional since Instagram removed hashtag following in December 2024. Search hashtags when you need to inspect a topic, but use account follows, Following, Favorites, Explore, Reels and deliberate recommendation controls for ongoing updates.
