Can’t Connect to Hotel Wi-Fi? What to Do

Hotel Wi-Fi usually has two steps: joining the wireless network and completing a browser-based sign-in. A device can show “connected” after the first step while the hotel portal still blocks internet access. Try the quick sequence below, then follow the branch that matches your symptom.

Try these fixes first

  1. Confirm the network. Ask the front desk for the exact guest Wi-Fi name (SSID), whether a password or room details are required, and whether there is a device limit or a separate network for guests. Do not assume a similarly named network is legitimate.
  2. Refresh Wi-Fi. Turn Wi-Fi off for several seconds, turn it back on, and reconnect. If needed, briefly switch airplane mode on and off. Marriott also recommends toggling Wi-Fi as an initial fix: Marriott Wi-Fi connection troubleshooting.
  3. Forget the saved network and reconnect. This can clear stale connection or authentication information. Use the steps for your device below, then start the sign-in process again.
  4. Open a browser yourself. Do not wait indefinitely for a sign-in notification. Open a full browser and use the hotel’s official Wi-Fi address, if the property provides one. Ask the front desk for the correct address rather than trusting a login page found in search results.
  5. Pause network filters long enough to sign in. A VPN, private DNS, privacy relay, ad blocker, or security filter can sometimes prevent the portal from appearing. Temporarily disconnect the VPN or filter if you are permitted to do so, authenticate, confirm access, then turn protection back on.
  6. Test another device. If no device works, the hotel network or account may be the issue. If other devices work, focus on the affected device’s saved profile, browser, VPN, or compatibility.

Hotel and other public networks commonly use captive portals: the device first joins Wi-Fi, then a web page requests details such as a room number and surname, an access code, payment, or acceptance of terms. See Microsoft’s explanation of captive portals and Google’s hotel-network guidance.

Identify where the connection is failing

What you see What it may mean What to do next
The hotel network is not listed Wi-Fi may be off, the signal may be weak, the SSID may be different, or the hotel network may be unavailable. Check Wi-Fi and airplane mode, move closer to an access point or public area, confirm the exact SSID with staff, and check another device.
The device sees the network but will not join The saved profile may be stale, credentials may be wrong, the network may require a portal instead of a Wi-Fi password, or the hotel may require device registration. Confirm the network and sign-in method; forget it and reconnect. Ask whether a device limit or outage applies.
It says connected, but there is no internet The wireless connection may be established while portal authorization is still pending. Open a browser, use the hotel’s confirmed portal address, and temporarily pause VPN or filtering software if appropriate.
The login page never appears Automatic portal detection or redirection may have failed. Open a normal browser, try another browser, reconnect after forgetting the network, and request the official portal URL from the hotel.
The page loops, fails, or vanishes The session may have expired, credentials may be incorrect, a filter may interfere, a device limit may apply, or the portal may be down. Close portal tabs, forget and rejoin the network, try a full browser, and ask staff to reset or authorize the device.
Your phone works but another device does not The second device may have a stale profile, restrictive VPN or security settings, a device-registration issue, or poor portal support. Use the device-specific steps below; ask the hotel whether it can clear old registrations or register the device.
A TV, console, or streaming device cannot sign in It may not have a browser that can complete the hotel’s portal. Ask about device registration, use a travel router if allowed, or use a phone hotspot if your plan supports it.
No devices can get online The hotel network, portal, or room authorization may be down or misconfigured. Stop troubleshooting each device and contact the front desk or the hotel’s Wi-Fi support number.

If the login page does not appear or keeps looping

  1. Disconnect from the hotel Wi-Fi, forget the saved network, and reconnect to start a fresh session.
  2. Open Safari, Chrome, Edge, or another full browser rather than an in-app browser. Try a second browser if the first stalls.
  3. Use the portal address supplied by the hotel or printed in its guest information. For example, Marriott tells some guests to use www.marriottwifi.com; that address is not a universal hotel login page.
  4. Temporarily pause a VPN, private DNS, iCloud Private Relay, corporate web filter, or similar network control if your device and workplace rules allow it. Restore it after authentication.
  5. Check that you entered the requested room details or access code correctly. If the page still loops, ask the front desk to clear old registered devices, reset your session, or register the device manually.

A portal page should ask for information consistent with the hotel’s stated sign-in process. Do not download unexpected software or enter unrelated account credentials or payment details on a page you cannot verify. Microsoft notes that captive hotel and airport networks can be identified as unsecured because authentication happens through a browser after Wi-Fi association: Microsoft Defender privacy protection FAQ.

Steps for your device

iPhone and iPad

  1. Open Settings > Wi-Fi and tap the hotel network.
  2. Wait for the sign-in screen. If it does not appear, tap the network’s information button and choose Join Network, then enter the requested information or accept the terms.
  3. If the portal is being dismissed automatically, check Auto-Join and Auto-Login on the network’s information screen. Do not choose Without Internet if you still need to authenticate; Apple says that option dismisses the welcome screen while keeping the device connected to the network.
  4. To clear the saved profile, tap the information button next to the network and choose Forget This Network, then reconnect.

Apple’s current captive-Wi-Fi instructions are at Connect to a captive Wi-Fi network on your iPhone or iPad. If the device cannot join any Wi-Fi network, not just the hotel’s, follow Apple’s broader Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.

  1. Open Settings > Network & internet > Internet and select the hotel network.
  2. Complete the browser sign-in if prompted. If it is missing, open a browser manually.
  3. To remove a stale saved connection, touch and hold the network and tap Forget, then reconnect.

Menu names vary across manufacturers and Android versions. Google’s general connection, Internet panel, and Forget instructions are at Connect to Wi-Fi networks on your Android device. Resetting the connection can end an active phone or video call.

Windows laptop

  1. Select the Wi-Fi icon in the taskbar, choose the hotel network, and connect.
  2. If no login page opens, launch a browser and visit the hotel’s confirmed portal address.
  3. To clear the connection, go to Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks, select the hotel network, and choose Forget. Reconnect and sign in again.
  4. If other networks also fail, use Windows network troubleshooting. Microsoft documents Start > Settings > Network and Internet > Status > Network troubleshooter; screens and labels can differ by Windows release. See Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi guidance.

A work-managed laptop may prevent changes to VPN, DNS, or security settings. Do not bypass workplace protections; contact your IT team if those controls block the portal. Windows treats captive-portal access separately from ordinary Wi-Fi association, and the portal may not be available at the Windows login screen: Microsoft captive-portal documentation.

Mac

  1. Select the Wi-Fi menu and join the hotel network, then wait for its sign-in window.
  2. If the window does not appear, open Safari manually and use the portal address confirmed by hotel staff.
  3. Forget the hotel network in Wi-Fi settings and reconnect if the session is stuck.
  4. Temporarily disconnect a VPN or filtering tool if permitted, sign in, then restore it.

macOS menu labels vary by version, so use the Wi-Fi settings shown on your Mac rather than relying on a single version-specific path.

Smart TVs, streaming sticks, consoles, and other devices

Some devices have no full browser or cannot handle a portal redirect. Joining the hotel SSID alone may not grant internet access. Ask whether the hotel offers a device-registration process or can authorize the device manually. Google says Nest products do not work with captive-portal networks, an example of the limitation: Google Nest captive-portal guidance.

When one device works but another does not

  • Check for a hotel device limit. Some properties cap the number of devices associated with a room or account. Ask the front desk to remove old registrations or add the new device.
  • Clear the failing device’s saved profile. Forget the hotel network, reconnect, and complete a fresh portal session.
  • Check the browser and network filters. Try a full browser and temporarily pause VPN, private DNS, privacy relay, content filtering, or security software only when allowed.
  • Consider portal compatibility. Phones and laptops usually have a suitable browser; TVs and consoles may not. Request registration or choose a supported alternative.
  • Compare with another network. If the device also fails on other Wi-Fi networks, the fault may be with its Wi-Fi radio, driver, or configuration rather than the hotel.

Use a hotspot or travel router only when it fits

Phone hotspot or cellular backup

A hotspot can bypass a broken portal or connect a device that cannot display one. It is most practical for a small number of devices or short periods of work. It uses mobile data, may be slow indoors, can incur roaming or plan charges, and drains the phone battery; carrier hotspot restrictions may also apply.

Travel router

A travel router can create a private local Wi-Fi network for several devices, which is useful for frequent travel or for a TV or console. Some models can complete a captive-portal login once and then share the connection through the router; see TP-Link’s captive-portal instructions and the TL-WR1502X product page.

  • EASY SETUP WITH LED INDICATOR: Power it on and connect up to 10 devices over WiFi in minutes — no technical setup. Includes the JourneyGo hotspot and USB cable; an active cellular data plan is required to get online.

A router adds setup, power, and equipment to carry. Hotel rules may restrict personal routers, and device registration or MAC-address handling may still require staff help. It cannot repair a hotel outage or increase the bandwidth supplied by the property. Check permission before connecting one.

Use hotel Wi-Fi more safely

  • Verify the exact guest network name with hotel staff; a similar name is not proof that a network belongs to the property.
  • Do not install unexpected updates or enter credentials unrelated to the hotel on a portal page.
  • Treat shared hotel Wi-Fi as an untrusted network. Use HTTPS sites and, after portal login, reconnect your VPN if you use one.
  • If the sign-in page looks suspicious or requests information the hotel did not describe, stop and ask staff; use cellular data for sensitive activity until the network is verified.
  • Keep your operating system, browser, and security software updated before travel.

When to contact the front desk

Call or visit the front desk when the network is missing in multiple areas, no device can get online, the portal repeatedly rejects valid details, or the device requires registration. Ask staff to confirm the exact SSID and portal URL, check whether the network is down, reset your room’s authorization, remove old registered devices, and authorize a TV, console, or router if the property permits it. Once several devices fail the same way, further changes on your own devices are unlikely to fix a hotel-side problem.
