“Connected” does not always mean usable. Android headphones can fail at discovery, pairing, reconnection, audio routing, or calls—and each stage has a different fix. Start by charging both devices, stopping nearby devices from auto-connecting, putting the headphones into genuine pairing mode, forgetting the old Bluetooth record, and pairing again. Do not factory-reset the phone until the less destructive steps have failed.
Identify the failure before changing settings
Use the symptom to choose the right branch:

Google treats music and calling as separate Bluetooth functions: a saved connection can still have Media audio or Phone audio disabled. See Google’s Android troubleshooting guide.

The five-minute fix
- Charge everything. Charge the phone, earbuds and case. Make sure both earbuds touch the case contacts. For over-ear models, verify that the power indicator—not only a charging indicator—is active.
- Disable Bluetooth on other remembered devices. Turn it off temporarily on old phones, tablets, laptops, watches, cars, televisions and nearby devices. Multipoint headphones may reconnect to one of them automatically.
- Enter true pairing mode. Turning headphones on is not always enough. Hold the manufacturer-specified power or case button until the indicator flashes.
- Forget the old phone record. In Bluetooth settings, open the headphones’ settings icon and choose Forget, Forget device, or Unpair.
- Restart both sides. Toggle Bluetooth off and on, restart the phone, power-cycle the headphones, and return both earbuds to their case briefly.
- Pair again and check profiles. After pairing, enable Media audio for music and Phone audio for calls.
Google recommends keeping Fast Pair accessories within 0.5 metres (1.6 feet) during setup. Samsung gives an approximate Bluetooth range of 30 feet, but walls, bodies and radio interference can reduce it. Sources: Google and Samsung.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Connected devices.
- Tap Pair new device.
- Put the headphones in pairing mode.
- Select the primary headphone name and approve the request.
Pixel phones commonly use Settings → Connected devices → Connection preferences → Bluetooth; labels vary by manufacturer and Android skin. Consult Google’s Pixel instructions if your menu differs.
Fast Pair generally requires Bluetooth, Location, an internet connection, a compatible Android device and close proximity. Google lists Android 6.0 or later for Fast Pair support, while individual accessory features can require newer software or a companion app. Details: Android Fast Pair.
Clear pairing memory on both devices
Forgetting the headphones on the phone does not necessarily erase the headphones’ own memory. If the headset has stored too many phones or tablets, follow its manufacturer-specific factory-reset procedure as well. Do not substitute a generic button sequence: reset methods differ by model.

On Samsung Galaxy devices, the usual path is Settings → Connections → Bluetooth → settings icon beside the device → Forget device. Samsung documents this and related recovery steps at its Bluetooth troubleshooting page.

When the phone says connected but audio is wrong
- Open Bluetooth settings and tap the headphones’ settings icon.
- Turn on Media audio for music.
- Turn on Phone audio if calls are affected.
- Start playback and choose the headphones in the system media-output picker or the app’s output control.
- Pause or disconnect another paired speaker, car or headset that may be receiving audio.
If music works but calls do not, check the call screen’s audio-device button, microphone permission and whether a car or second headset has claimed the call profile.
Fix disconnects and intermittent reconnection
Control multipoint and auto-switching
Multipoint can connect headphones to up to two Bluetooth devices, but implementation varies by model. A laptop, tablet or car may silently reclaim the connection. Disable Bluetooth on those devices during testing. Google explains audio switching and multipoint at its Android audio-switching overview.
Run a controlled range test
Place the headphones beside the phone, disable other Bluetooth devices and test with the phone screen unlocked. If the connection is stable only at close range, investigate obstruction, radio congestion or a damaged antenna; do not assume interference without this comparison.

Install Android system updates. In the headphone maker’s app, install firmware and app updates, then restart. Third-party accessories may need firmware updates that the phone cannot install itself, as Samsung notes in its troubleshooting guidance.

Try Safe Mode only when an app is suspect
On Samsung phones, Safe Mode disables downloaded apps. If Bluetooth works there, investigate recently installed equalizers, audio enhancers, automation tools, security software or device-management apps. Entry methods differ across manufacturers, so use your phone maker’s instructions rather than treating Samsung’s procedure as universal.
Reset network settings before considering a factory reset
When ordinary re-pairing fails, reset only network connections. On Galaxy phones the path is generally Settings → General management → Reset → Reset Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth settings → Reset settings. Other phones may call it Reset Wi‑Fi, mobile & Bluetooth or Reset Bluetooth & Wi‑Fi; search Settings for “reset network settings.”
This removes saved Wi‑Fi networks and Bluetooth relationships but not personal files. You will need to reconnect to networks and accessories. A factory reset erases data and settings, so Samsung places updates, Safe Mode and network reset ahead of it. Use Samsung’s current sequence and back up before any factory reset.

Headphones are invisible
- Charge the headset and case; clean earbud charging contacts.
- Force the manufacturer’s pairing mode, not merely power-on mode.
- Move within 0.5 metres for setup.
- Disable Bluetooth on remembered nearby devices.
- Try another phone. Failure everywhere points toward the accessory.
Pairing is rejected
- Forget the phone-side record and reset the headphone’s own pairing memory if required.
- Select the primary headphone entry if several entries appear.
- Restart both devices before retrying.
- If prompted for a PIN, use the manufacturer’s documented code; do not guess repeatedly.
Only one earbud works
- Confirm the silent bud is charging in the case.
- Clean its charging contacts.
- Remove separate left/right entries and pair through the primary headset entry.
- Use the maker’s documented left/right synchronization or case-reset process.
The problem began after an update
Record the phone model, Android build, headphone model and firmware, the date the problem began, and whether another phone connects. Check both manufacturers’ support pages and release notes. Community reports can reveal patterns, but they do not prove a confirmed defect unless the manufacturer acknowledges one.

Compatibility is more than the Bluetooth logo
Basic audio may work while proprietary features do not. Android version, phone model, firmware, companion app, account requirements, Bluetooth profiles, codecs, region software and ecosystem can affect controls, spatial audio, head tracking, automatic switching, call quality and device-finding features.
Samsung says Galaxy Buds4 Pro provide their fullest feature set on compatible Galaxy devices; other Android phones may require Galaxy Wearable and may expose fewer features. See Samsung’s product information and its feature-availability table.
Google lists Pixel Buds Pro 2 as compatible with Bluetooth 4.0-or-newer devices, but full features require additional Google and Android conditions. Check the official product page. “Compatible” therefore means the basic connection may work, not that every ecosystem feature will be identical.
Decide whether to repair, replace or troubleshoot the phone

Replacement is more rational when a case cannot charge an earbud, pairing fails after a full accessory reset, support has ended, or repair approaches replacement cost. It is not the right first answer when the phone cannot connect to any Bluetooth accessory.

What to look for in replacement headphones
- A clear Android compatibility statement and maintained companion app
- Physical pairing and reset controls
- Firmware-update support
- Multipoint if you switch between devices
- A standard Bluetooth fallback when proprietary features fail
- Independent left/right earbud operation
- A case with clear charging indicators
- Documented call and microphone support
- A practical return policy
Bluetooth version numbers and codec branding do not guarantee reliable pairing. Phone and headphone support must overlap.
