1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf Gemini will not open or shows “Something went wrong,” first identify which Gemini product you are trying to use and which Google Account is active. Google says that message only means the account cannot access the web app at that moment; possible causes include location, age, account type, and other eligibility conditions. It does not prove that your VPN, DNS, browser extension, firewall, or internet connection is the cause.
Work through the checks below in order: account identity, age, country or territory, organization policy, browser or Chrome profile, and then the limited network checks Google documents for Gemini in Chrome.

Start by identifying the Gemini product
“Gemini” is not one access rule. The Gemini web app at gemini.google.com, the Gemini mobile app, and Gemini in Chrome have separate availability and sign-in requirements. A feature working on one surface does not guarantee that another is enabled for your account, device, or location.

Confirm the Google Account that is actually signed in
Multiple Google Accounts in one browser are a common source of confusion. The account shown in Gmail or another Google service may not be the account Gemini is using.
- Open the Gemini page or app and select the profile picture or account switcher.
- Read the complete email address, not just the displayed name.
- If several accounts are listed, switch to the intended account and try again.
- If the account is managed by a school or employer, continue to the organization checks below; consumer-account troubleshooting may not apply.
Personal accounts
A personal Google Account can use the web app when it meets Google’s age and location rules. Google also says some web features may be available without signing in, but signing in is required for additional capabilities and for saving Gemini Apps activity. If you are only testing whether the service loads, try the available signed-out experience; do not assume that every feature will work there. The complete sign-in conditions are documented by Google Gemini Apps Help.
Family Link-managed accounts
Google states that Family Link-managed accounts cannot access the Gemini web app. Signing out and back in will not change that eligibility rule; a different, eligible account is required for the web app.
Work and school accounts
A work account needs a qualifying Google Workspace edition, the organization must allow Gemini Apps, and the user must be at least 18 for the web sign-in path described by Google. A school account requires the institution to enable access. If the account is eligible but blocked, the administrator—not a browser setting—is the person who can change the policy. Google explains these distinctions in its sign-in requirements and its work or school account guidance.

Check the age rule for this account and feature
There is no single age number that applies to every Gemini surface. Google’s web guidance describes a minimum of 13, or the applicable local age, for personal and school accounts, while work-account access requires the user to be 18 or older. Individual plans and features can impose different thresholds.
- Personal account: meet 13 or the minimum age that applies in your country.
- School account: meet the applicable local age and have access enabled by the school.
- Work account: meet the 18-or-older requirement described by Google for organizational sign-in.
- Specific feature: check that feature’s own eligibility, rather than transferring the web-app rule to the mobile app or Chrome.
If your Google Account’s birthday is incorrect, use Google’s account settings to correct it through the normal verification process. Do not create a second account to evade an age restriction; that can create additional account and policy problems.
Verify that Gemini is available in your country or territory
Availability is product-specific. Google’s mobile-app page says the apps are offered in multiple languages and more than 150 countries, but that figure describes the mobile apps and does not guarantee web-app or Gemini-in-Chrome access in every one of those places. Use the current country list linked from the relevant Google help page for your product and location.

When you recently travelled
A recent move or trip can leave a browser or service with stale location information. For Gemini in Chrome, Google specifically recommends restarting Chrome when the feature should be available but is not, including after travel. Check the current location list before treating the behavior as a technical failure.

When the web app and mobile app disagree
Different availability lists are expected. The web app, mobile app, and Gemini in Chrome roll out separately, so a successful sign-in on a phone does not establish that the same account can use the browser feature, and vice versa.
For work or school accounts, check administrator access
Workspace administrators control whether Gemini Apps are available and which features a license permits. Data handling and feature availability also depend on the organization’s Workspace configuration.
- Ask the administrator whether Gemini Apps are enabled for your organizational unit or group.
- Confirm that your Workspace edition qualifies for the feature you are trying to use.
- Make sure you are signed in with the managed account, not a personal account in the same browser.
- For a mobile access error, update the Gemini app, then ask the administrator to confirm that your account is allowed to use Gemini Apps.
Google’s organization-specific instructions are at Use Gemini Apps with a work or school Google Account. An administrator may need to make the change; reinstalling the app cannot override an organization policy.

Gemini web app browsers
For the web app, Google lists Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera, and Edgium as supported browsers. Use a current release where possible, then open the site in the profile that contains the eligible Google Account. If one supported browser fails, testing another supported browser can distinguish a browser-specific problem from an account or eligibility block, but it cannot make an unsupported account eligible.
Gemini in Chrome is a separate feature
Gemini in Chrome requires an eligible, signed-in Chrome profile. It is not available in Incognito mode or in a Chrome profile that is not signed in. Open the Chrome profile menu, select the profile connected to the eligible account, and retry in a normal window.
Being able to open gemini.google.com does not prove that Gemini in Chrome has rolled out to your account or region. Google describes the Chrome feature as rolling out over time, so availability can differ between users and surfaces.
Use the VPN check only where Google recommends it
For Gemini in Chrome, Google advises turning off a VPN if the feature is unavailable even though you are in a supported region. After disabling it, restart Chrome and try again. This is a targeted troubleshooting step for the Chrome feature, not evidence that every “Something went wrong” message is caused by a VPN.
Google’s general web sign-in explanation names location, age, account type, and other possible reasons, but it does not diagnose DNS filtering, browser extensions, firewalls, or a particular network as the cause of an individual error. Avoid presenting those possibilities as facts without evidence. The Chrome-specific instructions are documented in Google’s Gemini in Chrome help.

What “Something went wrong” actually means
Google’s sign-in help says: “If you get a ‘Something went wrong’ message while trying to access or sign in to the Gemini web app, your account can’t access the app at the moment. This can be due to a variety of reasons, including location, age, or type of account, among others.” In practical terms, the message is non-diagnostic. It tells you that access is currently unavailable, not which requirement failed.
Because the message is broad, start with eligibility checks rather than changing random network settings. If your account, age, location, and browser all satisfy the published requirements, Google’s page says you can try again later. A temporary service-side condition is possible, but the message itself does not establish an outage.
Follow this recovery sequence
- Identify the surface. Decide whether the failure is on the web app, mobile app, or Gemini in Chrome.
- Check the active account. Switch to the intended personal, work, or school Google Account and verify the full address.
- Apply the correct age rule. Check the local minimum age or the 18-plus work-account requirement, plus any feature-specific threshold.
- Check the exact location list. Confirm that the product—not merely Gemini generally—is supported in your country or territory.
- Resolve organization policy. For work or school accounts, have the Workspace administrator confirm licensing and Gemini Apps access.
- Use a supported browser or profile. For the web app, use Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera, or Edgium. For Gemini in Chrome, use a signed-in, non-Incognito profile.
- Update the mobile app when applicable. Google recommends checking for an app update before asking an organization administrator to confirm mobile access.
- Apply the Chrome-only network check. If Gemini in Chrome should work in your region, turn off the VPN, restart Chrome, and retry.
- Retry later if all published conditions are satisfied. The generic web error does not identify a single fix, so repeated immediate changes are unlikely to reveal the cause.
Quick diagnosis by symptom
| Symptom | Most useful next check |
|---|---|
| Web app says “Something went wrong” immediately after sign-in | Verify account type, age, and country availability; Google treats these as possible causes. |
| Personal account works, school account does not | Ask the school administrator whether Gemini Apps are enabled. |
| Work account is signed in but access is denied | Confirm a qualifying Workspace edition, organizational policy, and age requirement with the administrator. |
| Mobile app cannot be used on an organization account | Update the app and have the administrator confirm Gemini Apps access. |
| Gemini in Chrome is missing or unavailable | Check rollout and country eligibility, sign into the correct Chrome profile, leave Incognito, restart Chrome, and turn off the VPN. |
| Web app opens but saved activity or extra features are missing | Sign in; Google says additional features and saved Gemini Apps activity require an account. |
When to stop changing settings
If you have confirmed the correct product, eligible account, applicable age, supported location, browser or Chrome profile, and organization policy, stop treating the generic message as proof of a local network fault. For the web app, Google’s documented next action is to try again later. For Gemini in Chrome, follow the separate restart and VPN guidance. Keep the product-specific help pages bookmarked because country lists, age policies, rollout status, and Workspace requirements can change.
