On the Canon PIXMA G7020, error 5200 means Canon has detected a printer error; Canon’s G7000-series manual does not define it simply as low ink. Follow Canon’s recovery steps in order: check and refill ink if needed, power-cycle the printer, then run Replace Ink in Print Head. If the error returns after print-head replacement, contact a Canon service center.
What Canon error 5200 means
Canon’s G7000 series Online Manual labels code 5200: “Printer error has occurred.” It does not identify an empty ink tank as the sole cause. Checking ink is the first troubleshooting step, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The G7020 belongs to the G7000 series. Canon’s instructions for that series specify an order and warn that skipping steps or changing their order may cause other problems.
Follow Canon’s G7000-series recovery order
- Check the remaining ink. Refill any tank that needs ink.
- Turn the printer off and unplug it.
- Reconnect power and turn the printer on.
- Run Replace Ink in Print Head. Use the printer’s maintenance instructions for this operation; do not substitute a different cleaning option just because its name sounds similar.
If the error returns after these steps, Canon says replacing the print heads may resolve it. Canon does not present replacement as a guaranteed fix. If 5200 recurs after the print heads have been replaced, Canon directs you to request repair from a Canon service center.

Ink flush, cleaning, and print-head replacement are different
These terms refer to different actions. Canon’s specified step for the G7000-series 5200 procedure is Replace Ink in Print Head; an ink flush, standard cleaning, and deep cleaning should not be treated as synonyms or as automatic substitutes.
G7020 owners have reported encountering 5200 during cleaning or deep-cleaning operations. In one Canon Community discussion, a product expert suggested an ink flush for that individual case. Another G7020 discussion advised checking that tanks were more than half full before attempting an ink flush. These are case-specific community reports, not a replacement for the ordered procedure in Canon’s manual.

When to replace a print head or seek service
Print-head replacement is a later-stage option: Canon says it may resolve the error if 5200 returns after the initial steps. Before buying a replacement, confirm that the part is compatible with the G7020 and verify the correct part with Canon documentation or the seller. The cited instructions do not provide a part number or establish current availability.

How the guidance differs for other Canon models
Canon’s G2070-series manual gives the same broad sequence and escalation logic. That corroborates Canon’s approach for that printer family, but it does not make instructions interchangeable across every Canon model. If you have a different printer, consult its own manual and follow model-specific directions.
