If a Canon PIXMA G3770 print is too dark, has a color cast, or is missing one color, start with paper orientation, media settings and ink levels. Then print a nozzle-check pattern. A damaged pattern calls for Canon’s cleaning sequence; a clean pattern points instead to color-management or application settings. This order avoids wasting ink and identifies when service is justified.
What a dark or color-shifted print usually tells you
There are two broad failure types. An uneven, streaked or incomplete nozzle-check pattern indicates that ink is not leaving the print-head nozzles correctly. A perfect nozzle check with a photograph that still looks too dark or has the wrong hue points away from a clog and toward the paper profile, driver settings, application color management or the source image’s color space.

Do not begin with Deep Cleaning simply because a photograph looks dark. Deep Cleaning uses substantially more ink than standard cleaning and cannot correct a wrong paper setting or an inconsistent color profile. Work through the checks below in order.

Load the printable side correctly
Many one-sided papers have a coated or otherwise designated printable side. Load that side in the orientation specified for the paper. Printing on the reverse can produce unclear or reduced-quality output, even when the printer itself is working normally.

Match the media type
In the Canon printer driver, set the media or paper type to the stock actually loaded. Plain paper, photo paper and other coated media use different ink limits and processing. A mismatch can change density and color.
Match print quality to the job
Check the print-quality setting before changing maintenance options. Use a quality level appropriate to the paper and the result you need, and make sure an economy or draft setting has not been selected accidentally. Record the setting when troubleshooting so that a later test is comparable.
- Paper is loaded with its printable side facing the required direction.
- The selected media type matches the loaded stock.
- The selected print quality is intentional rather than an accidental draft or economy choice.
After correcting these items, print the same file again. If the result is still wrong, continue with the ink check and nozzle test rather than guessing at color adjustments.
2. Check every ink tank
Inspect all tanks, paying particular attention to the color that is absent, weak or visibly different from the source. Canon’s guidance is to identify an empty tank and replace it. An empty color tank can create a strong color cast because the printer is no longer laying down the intended mixture.

Use the Canon designation for your country or region when obtaining a replacement. Bottle names and part numbers are not established universally for every market, so confirm the designation in the printer’s documentation or regional Canon support page before ordering. Do not replace a tank merely because a photograph looks dark if the tank is not empty; first use the nozzle-check pattern to separate ink delivery from color-management problems.
3. Print a nozzle-check pattern
The nozzle check is the fastest way to determine whether ink is ejecting properly from the print-head nozzles. Open the Canon printer driver or its maintenance utility and choose Print Nozzle Check Pattern. Use the printer’s normal paper and examine the printed grid and color bands in good light.
Canon describes the purpose this way: “Print the Nozzle Check Pattern to determine whether the ink ejects properly from the print head nozzles.”

Keep the nozzle-check sheet. It provides a clearer before-and-after comparison than a complex photograph and prevents you from confusing a source-image problem with a printer problem.

4. Follow Canon’s cleaning ladder
Use the maintenance options in this order whenever the nozzle check is faulty. Print a fresh nozzle check after each stage so you know whether the previous action worked.
- Run standard Print Head Cleaning once. Start the Canon maintenance command, allow the cycle to finish, and print another nozzle-check pattern.
- Run standard Cleaning a second time if necessary. Canon allows a second standard cleaning when the first does not correct the pattern. Print another nozzle check after it completes.
- Run Print Head Deep Cleaning only after two standard cleanings fail. Select the Deep Cleaning command in the Canon maintenance utility, let it finish completely, and print another nozzle check.
Deep Cleaning consumes more ink than standard cleaning. That is why it belongs after two ordinary cleanings, not before them and not as a routine response to every dark photograph.
If Deep Cleaning does not fix the pattern
Canon’s documented sequence is specific: turn the printer off, wait 24 hours, then perform Deep Cleaning again. If the problem remains after two Deep Cleanings, the print head may be damaged and service should be contacted. Do not keep launching repeated deep cycles indefinitely; they use ink without addressing a head that has failed mechanically or electrically.

A clean nozzle pattern means the printer can eject the tested inks. If the output is still too dark, too light or shifted toward one hue, examine the settings that convert the image’s colors into printer ink values.

Windows and an Adobe RGB photograph
Canon’s Windows instructions for an Adobe RGB source are:
- Open the Canon printer driver’s color controls and select Manual for Color/Intensity.
- Choose ICM for Color Correction.
- Set Adobe RGB (1998) as the Input Profile.
Use those choices only when the source photograph actually uses Adobe RGB. Selecting Adobe RGB for an sRGB image can create a different error rather than correcting one. If the application is already managing color, avoid having both the application and the driver apply unrelated corrections. Keep the source profile, application setting and driver input profile consistent.
Check intensity and automatic corrections
Manual Color/Intensity controls can alter brightness, contrast and channel balance. Return unusual manual adjustments to a known neutral state before comparing prints. If the image is dark in every application while the nozzle check is perfect, compare the driver’s manual settings with the application’s color-management choice instead of running more cleaning cycles.

Use a controlled test image
For diagnosis, print a file containing neutral gray, skin-tone-like neutrals, saturated primary colors and a shadow area. Compare the same file after one change at a time. A single controlled change tells you whether the issue is the driver profile, the application workflow or the printer.

6. Keep ink quality even with automatic maintenance
Canon warns that disabled automatic ink-quality maintenance can allow ink in one or more tanks to separate, producing uneven density. Check the printer’s maintenance settings and enable the automatic ink-quality option when available.
If automatic maintenance is disabled for a deliberate reason, Canon recommends performing the equivalent maintenance manually about once a week. This is preventive maintenance, not a substitute for the nozzle-check and cleaning sequence when a pattern is already defective.

Common mistakes that make the problem worse
- Cleaning before testing: A dark image with a clean nozzle check is usually a settings problem; unnecessary cleaning spends ink.
- Using the wrong side of one-sided paper: The printer may produce unclear or reduced-quality output even though the nozzles are healthy.
- Leaving an empty tank in place: Replace the empty tank identified during inspection instead of trying to compensate with color sliders.
- Running Deep Cleaning repeatedly: The operation uses more ink and should follow two standard cleanings, not replace them.
- Assigning Adobe RGB to every file: The Adobe RGB (1998) input setting is for a source that is actually Adobe RGB. Keep an sRGB workflow matched to sRGB.
- Changing several variables at once: If paper, driver profile and application settings all change together, you cannot identify which correction worked.
- Judging only from a complex photograph: A nozzle-check sheet and a controlled test image make missing colors and density changes easier to distinguish.
A complete, low-waste troubleshooting procedure
- Note the exact symptom: overall darkness, a color cast, a missing color, banding or gaps.
- Confirm the paper’s printable side, the driver media type and the print-quality setting.
- Inspect every ink tank and replace any tank that Canon’s instructions identify as empty, using the designation for your region.
- Print a nozzle-check pattern and keep it for comparison.
- If the pattern is faulty, run standard Cleaning once and print another pattern.
- If it is still faulty, run standard Cleaning a second time and test again.
- If two standard cleanings fail, run Deep Cleaning and print another pattern, remembering that it consumes more ink.
- If the fault remains, turn the printer off, wait 24 hours and perform Deep Cleaning once more.
- If two Deep Cleanings have not restored the pattern, contact a Canon service center because the print head may be damaged.
- If the original nozzle check was clean, leave maintenance alone and correct the color workflow. On Windows with an Adobe RGB photograph, use Manual Color/Intensity, ICM Color Correction and Adobe RGB (1998) as the Input Profile; otherwise keep the profile matched to the source and application.
- Check that automatic ink-quality maintenance is enabled, or perform the manual equivalent about once a week if it is disabled.
When replacement or service is the right answer
Replace an empty ink tank
Tank replacement is appropriate when inspection identifies an empty tank, particularly when the corresponding color is missing or weak in the nozzle check. Confirm the regional Canon bottle designation before purchase; a globally valid part number is not established for every market.

Contact a service center
Escalate to a Canon printer service center after the prescribed cleaning sequence: two standard Cleanings, Deep Cleaning, the 24-hour wait and a second Deep Cleaning. A pattern that still has missing segments or absent colors at that point can indicate print-head damage rather than a setting that can be corrected at home.
Do not treat paper as a cure for a clog
Paper compatible with the PIXMA G3770 matters for correct media handling and printable-side orientation, but changing paper cannot repair a nozzle-check pattern with missing segments. Diagnose ink delivery first, then optimize the paper and driver combination for the final print.
Why the nozzle check is the key dividing line
The nozzle check tests the printer’s physical ink-ejection path without relying on the color profile of your photo editor. A defective pattern gives you evidence to use the maintenance ladder. A complete pattern tells you that additional cleaning is unlikely to fix a profile or density mismatch, so your time is better spent aligning source, application and driver color settings.
