A Canon patent report describes a telephoto zoom designed with space for an extender inside the lens. In one reported example, inserting the approximately 1.4× extender changes the range from 103–294mm at f/2.91 to 143.99–411mm at f/4.10, while the stated overall length remains 370mm. These are patent-example figures, not specifications or test results for a released lens.
What the reported Canon patent describes
IMAGING PRESS reports that Japanese publication JP 2026-152979 covers a telephoto zoom optical design that reserves room toward the rear of the optical system for an extender group. Unlike a conventional external teleconverter mounted between a camera and lens, this arrangement places the extender within the lens design. The report says the light bundle is narrower in that region, which may allow smaller extender glass; that is the stated design rationale, not a demonstrated production result. (IMAGING PRESS report)

|---|---|---|---|
| Base zoom | 103–294mm | f/2.91 | 370mm |
| With extender | 143.99–411mm | f/4.10 | 370mm |
These values are attributed to patent examples in IMAGING PRESS’s 2026 report; they are not measurements of a production lens. The report also lists other calculated examples with stated lengths of 360mm and 370mm, but those too are design examples rather than released-product specifications. #1 Best Overall
- EF Mount; Aperture Range: f/4-45; DC Autofocus Motor; 4.9' Minimum Focus Distance; 58mm Filter Thread Diameter
- 4.9-foot closest focusing distance; 32- to 8-degree diagonal angle of view
- Measures 2.8 inches in diameter and 4.8 inches long; weighs 16.8 ounces
- Improved mechanism makes zooming smoother; front part of zoom ring sports silver ring.
What changes when the extender is inserted
More reach within the same stated length
In the cited example, the long end rises from 294mm to 411mm, and the short end from 103mm to 143.99mm. The report gives the same 370mm overall length for both configurations. This is the design’s central appeal: increasing the stated focal-length range without adding length to the reported configuration. It does not establish whether the lens would keep that length during operation or how an actual mechanism would work in a finished product.
A slower maximum aperture
The example’s maximum aperture shifts from f/2.91 to f/4.10 with the extender. That change is consistent with the light loss that accompanies increasing focal length through an extender. Canon’s general guidance says its RF and EF extenders multiply focal length by 1.4× or 2× while reducing lens speed; compatibility depends on the specific lens. (Canon extender guidance)

- Focal Length & Maximum Aperture : 75-300mm 1:4-5.6
- Lens Construction : 13 elements in 9 groups

- Focus Adjustment : Front group rotating extension system with Micromotor
- Closest Focusing Distance : 1.5m/ 4.9 ft.
How this differs from existing extender approaches
Canon has previously sold the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x, a telephoto zoom with a built-in, switchable 1.4× extender. It is a useful precedent for an integrated extender, but it is a distinct lens and does not verify that the newly reported patent design will become a product. Its current availability is not established here. (Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x)

- External teleconverter: Mounts between a compatible camera body and lens; Canon’s guidance describes 1.4× and 2× extenders, with reduced lens speed and lens-specific compatibility.
- Earlier built-in extender lens: Canon’s EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM has a switchable extender as part of that particular lens.
- Reported patent design: The examples describe an extender group accommodated within a telephoto zoom’s optical design. Whether it would be built, how it would be operated, and which cameras or lenses it might suit are unknown.
“Drop-in” can also refer to Canon’s EF-EOS R adapter with a drop-in-filter feature. That is a separate filter-adapter feature, not the reported teleconverter arrangement. (Canon EF-EOS R drop-in filter adapter)
Rank #3
- World’s first AF super-telephoto zoom lens with telephoto end of 800mm1.
- Powerful telephoto capabilities, with zoom range from 200mm through 800mm.
- Compatible with Extender RF1.4x and Extender RF2x, at all focal lengths.
- Lightweight and compact design for a super-telephoto 4x zoom lens with an 800mm telephoto end — allows for comfortable handheld shooting and excellent mobility.
- Optimized optical design takes advantage of the RF mount to maintain high image quality through the zoom range in a compact super-telephoto zoom lens.
Does the patent mean a new Canon lens is coming?
No product announcement is established by the report. It does not confirm a product name, mount, final specifications, price, shipping date, or release plan. The numerical values are secondary reporting of patent examples, not independently verified measurements from an official product specification. The primary patent record and legal-status history were not established in the available reporting, so filing details, inventors, prosecution status, and definitive claim scope remain unverified. (IMAGING PRESS report)
Performance details are also unknown: the cited sources do not establish the design’s image quality, autofocus behavior, weight, handling, or weather sealing. Nor do they establish compatibility with any existing Canon extender or camera system. Canon’s general compatibility guidance is not enough to infer compatibility for an unannounced design.
