The Canon MAXIFY GX7160 is a feature-rich refillable-ink multifunction printer for a small office that needs printing, scanning, copying and faxing, plus substantial paper capacity. Its strongest case is workflow: Canon lists automatic duplex printing and scanning, a 50-sheet automatic document feeder, two 250-sheet cassettes and a 100-sheet rear tray. The trade-off is that Canon’s advertised ink yields are estimates, not a promise of how many pages your office will get. This assessment is based on Canon’s regional product and support information, not independent print-quality or reliability testing.
What is the Canon MAXIFY GX7160?
The GX7160 is a four-function ink-tank printer: it prints, scans, copies and faxes. Canon New Zealand positions it for small offices and lists Wi-Fi, wired LAN, USB-B, direct connection and USB-A flash support. Canon lists a print resolution of 600 × 1200 dpi and document print speeds of up to 24 images per minute in black and 15.5 images per minute in colour. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements; actual throughput depends on the document, settings and workflow.
Paper handling and scanning are the main strengths
The GX7160’s feeds can hold up to 600 sheets of plain paper in total, but that capacity is split between three locations rather than concentrated in the cassettes.

Automatic two-sided printing and automatic duplex scanning can reduce manual handling for double-sided office documents. Canon also lists support for media such as envelopes, brochures, stickers and business-card media, as well as custom-length media up to 1,200 mm through the rear tray. These are listed capabilities; the available information does not establish independent results for print quality on those materials.
Ink yield: useful estimates, not a guaranteed page count
Canon New Zealand lists up to 6,000 black and 14,000 colour prints per set of replacement bottles. It says these declared yields are estimated using its individual test method, based on the ISO/IEC 24712 colour chart and continuous-printing simulation after initial setup. In Economy Mode, Canon lists up to 9,000 black and 21,000 colour pages per set. These are manufacturer figures, not an independent estimate of what a particular office will achieve.

Canon warns that actual yield varies significantly with printed content and other factors, and says black and colour yields should not be added together. Initial setup bottles also yield less than replacement bottles because some ink is used to charge the print head. For that reason, the headline yields should not be treated as guaranteed page counts or used alone to calculate a reliable cost per page.
The New Zealand listing identifies GI-66BK black and GI-66 cyan, magenta and yellow bottles. Ink codes and availability are regional: verify the consumable series on your local Canon listing and printer label before buying.

Software, connectivity and compatibility
Canon Australia’s GX7160 support page lists manuals, setup instructions and software, including a GX7100-series MP driver for Windows and Linux scanner and printer driver packages. Driver listings and versions can change. Select your operating-system version on the support page and confirm that the needed functions are supported before purchase, particularly if the printer will be managed in a mixed-device office.
Price and regional buying checks
Canon New Zealand showed an NZ$949 recommended retail price when its product page was accessed in 2026; Canon directs buyers to retailers for pricing. That figure is not a verified current street price and should not be applied outside New Zealand. Compare the price in your market with the printer’s features and the replacement ink available there.

Is the Canon MAXIFY GX7160 worth buying?
It is a plausible fit for a small office that values a refillable ink system, automatic duplex scanning, two cassettes, a rear feed and faxing in one machine. Its listed 600-sheet total capacity and 50-sheet ADF suit document-heavy routines better than a basic printer with a single small tray and manual scanning.
