Its specifications make it a plausible fit for a home office or small workgroup that mainly prints documents. The key buying checks are whether its paper capacity suits your workload and whether the local price of Canon 070 or 070 H toner makes sense for your volume. Canon’s published figures are specifications, not independent test results.
What the LBP243dw II is—and what it is not
Canon describes the LBP243dw II as an “A4 black & white single-function laser printer.” It prints, but does not scan or copy, so it is not an all-in-one device. Its monochrome engine is aimed at text and other black-and-white office output rather than colour printing. Canon Australia’s product page presents it as a compact office printer with mobile printing support.

How fast does it print?
Canon rates the LBP243dw II at up to 36 A4 pages per minute in simplex (single-sided) mode and up to 30.2 A4 images per minute in duplex (two-sided) mode. The same manufacturer datasheet gives an approximately five-second-or-less first-page time and print quality up to 1200 × 1200 dpi. These are manufacturer specifications, not independently measured results. Canon Europe’s technical datasheet sets out the model’s rated figures.
#1 Best Overall
- Monochrome, Wireless, Duplex Printer: Print only.
- Fast Print Speeds: Print up to 42 pages per minute and spend less time waiting with a quick first print time of approximately 5 seconds.
- Easy Wireless Setup: Setup your wireless connection and get up and running in just a few steps.
- 5-inch Color Touchscreen: Get the job done quickly with Application Library - an intuitive and easy to use customizable access to the features you use most.
- Mobile Device Printing: Print on-the-go using your compatible mobile devices with the free Canon PRINT app, Apple AirPrint and Mopria Print Service.
Canon’s manual cautions that speed can vary with paper type and size, feed direction, operating conditions, and automatic pauses or slowdowns used to manage printer condition and image quality. A quoted maximum therefore should not be treated as a promise that every mixed office job will print at that rate. The evidence available here does not establish measured speed, noise, reliability, or real-world print quality.
Does it print double-sided?
Yes. Automatic duplex printing is listed for the LBP243dw II, so it can print on both sides without requiring you to turn and reload each sheet manually. Canon rates duplex output at up to 30.2 A4 images per minute. That rate is distinct from the simplex figure of 36 pages per minute; compare like with like when evaluating another printer.

Paper capacity and office workflow
The standard paper setup is a 250-sheet drawer plus a 100-sheet multipurpose tray. The tray provides a separate feed point for paper that is not loaded in the main drawer. Canon’s basic specifications give these capacities for the II series. The function matrix also lists the optional Cassette Feeding Module-AH as supported, which may suit a workgroup that needs more input capacity. Check regional availability and installation requirements before planning around an optional feeder. Canon’s basic specifications and II-series function matrix list the paper and feature details.
The specifications support an A4 document workflow, but they do not establish that every paper type, size, or weight is suitable for every tray. Confirm the media requirements in the manual for the stock you intend to use.

Connections, mobile printing and administration
For a wired setup, the printer has USB 2.0 Hi-Speed and 10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet. Wireless connectivity is 802.11b/g/n, and Wireless Direct is also listed. Canon identifies Canon PRINT Business, Apple AirPrint, and Mopria support for mobile printing. The combination gives a small office options for a shared network connection as well as printing from supported mobile devices. Canon’s datasheet lists the interfaces; Canon Australia’s product page names the mobile-print options.
The function matrix also lists Remote UI and Department ID Management. One notable limitation for buyers comparing similar models: Canon marks Secure Print as unsupported on the LBP243dw II, while listing it as supported on the LBP246dw II. Do not assume a feature shown for a neighboring model applies to this one.

Which toner does the LBP243dw II use?
Canon lists Cartridge 070 and Cartridge 070 H as replacement toner options. The supplied cartridge is listed at an average yield of 1,500 sheets; Canon gives average yields of 3,000 sheets for Cartridge 070 and 10,200 sheets for Cartridge 070 H. Those figures are based on ISO/IEC 19752, printing A4 plain paper at default print density. They are standardized average yields, not guaranteed page counts: actual yield depends on factors such as page coverage and use. Canon’s consumables manual provides the yield basis, and Canon UK’s consumables page lists the 070 H for the exact LBP243dw II.
Canon recommends genuine cartridges for optimum print quality. That is the manufacturer’s recommendation, not independent comparative evidence about third-party toner. Before ordering, verify the exact printer model, cartridge identifier, and regional compatibility on the seller’s listing.

How to assess toner cost
No current, region-specific cartridge prices are established here, so a reliable cost-per-page figure cannot be calculated. Compare the local prices of the 070 and 070 H against their stated average yields, using the same assumptions about coverage and usage. A high-yield cartridge has a higher stated average yield, but whether it reduces your cost depends on the price you can actually buy it for.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Size, weight and electricity figures
Canon gives approximate dimensions of 399 × 373 × 249 mm and approximate weight of 9.5 kg. Allow room for access to the paper trays and connections rather than judging fit from the body dimensions alone. The datasheet lists about 1,250 W maximum power consumption, 480 W while printing, 6 W in standby, and 0.9 W in sleep. It also lists typical electricity consumption of 0.29 kWh per week at 230 V. These are manufacturer figures; an individual electricity bill depends on usage and local rates. Canon Europe’s datasheet supplies these specifications.
Who should consider it?
A reasonable match
- Home offices and small workgroups that need A4 black-and-white documents rather than colour output.
- Users who want automatic two-sided printing and a choice of wired Ethernet, Wi-Fi, USB, or direct wireless connection.
- Offices whose 250-sheet drawer and 100-sheet multipurpose tray are sufficient, or that can use the supported optional cassette feeder.
- Buyers who can check local 070 and 070 H prices and choose based on their own expected volume.
Look elsewhere if
- You need scanning, copying, or colour printing; this is a single-function monochrome printer.
- Secure Print is a requirement; Canon’s model-specific function matrix marks it unsupported on the LBP243dw II.
- You need to know real-world print quality, noise, reliability, or a measured mixed-job speed before buying. The cited material does not establish those outcomes.
Verdict
On paper, the Canon i-SENSYS LBP243dw II combines a high rated A4 print speed, automatic duplexing, multiple network and mobile-print options, and two toner-yield choices. Its standard input capacity and monochrome-only, print-only design define the practical fit. It is worth considering for a small office that matches those needs, but weigh local toner prices and do not treat Canon’s rated speeds or yield figures as independent real-world results.
