Yes—the Canon EOS 77D can take usable low-light photos, especially with a bright lens, but it is not a low-light specialist. Its 24.2-megapixel APS-C sensor and still-photo ISO range of 100–25600 offer flexibility; independent reviews found its high-ISO performance decent for its class, but not among the strongest, with noise and loss of subtle detail more apparent at the upper end.
What the Canon 77D’s low-light specifications mean
The EOS 77D is a Canon APS-C DSLR marketed in April 2017. Canon lists 24.2 million effective pixels and a still-photo ISO range of 100–25600. That ISO ceiling describes the settings the camera offers; it does not promise clean detail at ISO 25600. Canon Camera Museum and Canon’s specifications establish those capabilities.

In its review testing, Imaging Resource described relatively fine-grained luminance noise at ISO 3200 and substantial noise at the maximum native ISO. It characterized the camera’s high-ISO results as decent for a 24-megapixel APS-C camera, while noting that many rivals performed better. Why a high ISO setting does not guarantee a sharp photo
A dark-scene photo is a balance among light reaching the sensor, shutter speed, and acceptable noise and detail. Raising ISO makes a given exposure possible with less light or a faster shutter, but noise and loss of fine detail can become more visible. A longer exposure can gather light without raising ISO, but it risks blur from camera shake or subject movement.

The right choice depends on what is in the frame. A still building can tolerate a longer exposure if the camera is supported; a person, pet, or performer may move during that same exposure. A wide-aperture lens can gather more light, but it does not freeze motion on its own: shutter speed still has to suit the subject.
Choose a low-light approach for the subject
Static scenes
For a stationary subject, put the camera on a tripod or steady support and use a longer shutter speed if the scene allows it. Canon specifies shutter speeds from 1/4000 to 30 seconds, plus Bulb mode. Longer exposures can brighten a static scene at a lower ISO, but any movement in the scene—including leaves, water, or people—will be recorded as blur.

People, pets, and events
When the subject moves, prioritize a shutter speed that limits motion blur. If the photo is still too dark, a compatible lens with a wider maximum aperture can admit more light; added flash or continuous light may also help where practical. If those options are unavailable, raising ISO may be the better trade-off: some noise is often preferable to a blurred subject.

Canon specifies a 45-point all-cross-type viewfinder autofocus system. That point count alone does not establish whether focus will lock in a particular dark scene. Results depend on the lens, available contrast, subject, and light level. Check focus on the actual subject rather than assuming that a high ISO setting or autofocus-point count ensures a sharp action shot.

Use a compatible lens when the scene needs more light
The 77D accepts Canon EF and EF-S lenses, according to Canon’s specification sheet. When choosing a lens for dim scenes, consider its maximum aperture, focal length, and how quickly and reliably it can focus on the subject. A wider maximum aperture can help you use a faster shutter or a lower ISO, which is especially useful when you cannot use a tripod or add light. The trade-off is that a wide aperture can make depth of field shallower, so precise focus matters.
Set expectations by intended output
Whether noise is acceptable depends partly on how the image will be used. A photo shared at modest size may conceal noise and detail loss that become more obvious in a large print or after heavy cropping. Judge a test image at the size and crop you actually need, not only in the camera’s playback preview. If fine detail in shadows is important, avoid treating the maximum ISO as a routine target; use the lowest setting that still allows a shutter speed appropriate to the subject.

What Canon’s twilight example can—and cannot—show
Canon Asia’s field-testing article includes an illustrative faint-twilight example made at ISO 1600. It shows one way the camera was used, not a controlled comparison or proof that ISO 1600 will produce the same result in every scene. The available evidence supports a practical conclusion: the 77D can work in low light, but results depend heavily on the lens, shutter speed, subject movement, and the amount of noise and detail loss you can accept.
