If no Hulu show or movie will play, first try a different title, then test Hulu on another device. Those checks help separate a title restriction or device problem from a network, account, or wider service issue. Work through the checks below in order, starting with the least disruptive fixes.
Start with these quick checks
- Record the exact error. Note any code and the full wording before changing settings; Hulu has separate troubleshooting guidance for playback, browser, network, and app-loading problems in its Help Center.
- Try another title. If only one program fails, its availability or rights may be the issue rather than Hulu playback generally.
- Fully close Hulu and reopen it. Use your device’s app switcher or close command; Hulu explains how to fully close the app.
- Restart the device. This clears a stuck playback session without deleting app data.
- Test another device or Hulu.com. Use the same Wi-Fi first. If Hulu works there, focus on the device or app that failed.
If the app itself will not open, prioritize device and app updates, account access, and the device-specific steps below. If it opens but every title spins, buffers, or errors, continue with the network and account checks.
Is Hulu down, or is the problem on your device or network?
There is no confirmed outage established here, so do not assume a service-wide problem from one failed screen. Compare results across devices and connections:
| Test | What the result suggests |
|---|---|
| Hulu works on another device using the same Wi-Fi | The original device, app, browser, or display path is the likely fault. |
| Hulu works on cellular data or another network, but not home Wi-Fi | Investigate the router, ISP connection, VPN, proxy, custom DNS, or filtering. |
| Only one title fails | Check title availability, rights, regional restrictions, or a content-specific problem. |
| Every title fails on multiple devices and networks | A Hulu service, account, subscription, or broader playback issue is more plausible; check Hulu’s Help Center and contact support if it persists. |
| On-demand works but Live TV does not | Check location, home-network eligibility, channel availability, blackouts, plan, and simultaneous streams. |
Also check whether other streaming services work. A speed test can help, but a good result does not rule out Wi-Fi interference, brief dropouts, congestion, or routing and DNS problems.

Restart the connection and check its stability
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups, game updates, and other streams.
- If possible, move nearer the Wi-Fi router or connect the affected device by Ethernet.
- Unplug the modem and router from power. Wait about one minute, reconnect them, and allow the connection to come back fully.
- Restart the streaming device and try Hulu again.
- If playback still fails, test another Wi-Fi network or cellular data, where practical.
Hulu’s guidance covers improving an internet connection and buffering problems. Hulu requires high-speed internet, but do not rely on a single universal speed threshold: requirements vary with video quality and concurrent use. For Hulu + Live TV, a mobile hotspot does not count as a non-mobile home internet connection under the home-network rules described on Hulu’s MLB information page.
Fix a Hulu app problem on a TV or streaming device
- Check for updates. Update both Hulu and the device’s operating system or firmware. Menu names differ across Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, consoles, and smart TVs.
- Clear app cache if the device offers it. On some Android TV or Fire TV devices, a typical route is Settings → Apps → Hulu → Force stop, then Clear cache. The exact controls vary; do not assume every platform has a cache option.
- Clear app data or reset Hulu only if needed. This can sign you out and remove local app state. You will need to sign in again.
- Reinstall as a later step. Uninstall Hulu, restart the device, reinstall it from the official app store, and sign in. See Hulu’s reinstall instructions. Reinstalling may remove downloads or local settings, so first check whether Hulu works on another device.
Hulu’s current U.S. device information lists supported categories and select models, not a guarantee that every model or older system works. Check the supported-device information before concluding that a whole product family is compatible.

Fix Hulu in a desktop browser
- Sign out of Hulu, close its tab, and restart the browser.
- Clear Hulu site data or the browser cache, following Hulu’s browser-cache guidance.
- Update the browser and try another supported browser if available.
- Temporarily disable extensions that can interfere with playback, especially ad blockers, privacy or script tools, and VPN extensions. Re-enable them one at a time after testing.
- Check that JavaScript and required playback components are not blocked. A private or incognito window can be a useful test, but it is not a permanent fix and may fail if required components are restricted.
Turn off VPNs, proxies, and filtering for a test
VPNs, proxies, custom DNS, or network filtering can make Hulu reject or misidentify a connection. For diagnosis, turn off the VPN, disable proxy settings, and temporarily remove custom DNS or filtering; restart the device and router, then test on the normal home connection. Hulu identifies anonymous-proxy and network issues in its connection troubleshooting. If playback returns, restore network tools one at a time to identify the conflict. Do not use routing tools to bypass geographic restrictions.
If only Live TV, downloads, or casting fail
Live TV fails while on-demand works
Live TV is location-sensitive. Check that location services are enabled when required on a mobile device, that the connection meets Hulu’s home-network rules, and that the channel or program is available in your area. Local programming varies by location, and sports or other content may be blacked out. Hulu describes location, availability, restrictions, and stream terms on its Live TV page. A changed home network, hotel Wi-Fi, hotspot, or VPN can trigger a location or home-network problem.

Hulu + Live TV generally allows two simultaneous screens; Hulu lists an Unlimited Screens add-on for additional viewing at home. Check your current plan terms because limits and conditions can change.
Only downloaded titles fail
Check whether the title is eligible for download, whether the device has enough free storage, and whether your account and device meet the download rules. Download playback is a separate path from ordinary streaming, so test an on-demand title online to see whether the broader service works.

Casting fails, or the screen is black
Try playing Hulu directly on the TV or streaming device instead of casting. If direct playback works, update both the sending device and receiver. If audio plays but video stays black, test another HDMI port or cable and check the display connection; the fault may be in the device-to-screen or protected-video path rather than the internet connection.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check the account, plan, and sign-in
- Verify that you are signed into the intended Hulu account and email address.
- Confirm the subscription is active and check for a failed payment, especially if billing is handled through another provider.
- Confirm the plan includes the content you are trying to watch.
- Sign out and back in if the session appears stuck. If you cannot identify or access the account, use Hulu’s account-recovery page.
A bundle does not necessarily mean every service plays inside one app. Hulu’s plan information explains that Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN can require separate apps; some Hulu content may appear through Disney+, while other content remains available only in Hulu.

Use the symptom to choose the next test
- Endless loading or immediate stop: compare another title and device, then test another network. Update or reset the app only if the issue is isolated to one device.
- Constant buffering or freezing: test connection stability, reduce other network use, and try Ethernet or another network; a single speed result may not reveal intermittent loss.
- Black screen: compare direct playback with casting and check the HDMI/display path if audio still works.
- Browser or unsupported-network message: update the browser, clear site data, disable extensions and VPN/proxy tools for testing, and consult Hulu’s official browser and troubleshooting categories. This page is Hulu Japan’s help site; use the U.S. Help Center for U.S. account and service matters.
- P-DEV or another error code: do not treat the code alone as proof of one cause. Record it exactly and look it up in Hulu’s Help Center for device- and error-specific guidance.
- Hulu logs you out or will not load: check account access, update the app or browser, and sign back in after restarting.
When to contact Hulu
Contact Hulu through its official Help Center if the problem continues after testing another title, device, and network and applying the relevant fix. Hulu lists live support availability as 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Have these details ready:
