Insomnia after quitting cannabis usually starts within 24–48 hours, is often worst around days 2–6, and improves substantially within one to two weeks. Trouble falling asleep, repeated awakenings, unusually vivid dreams and night sweats are recognized withdrawal symptoms. Sleep and dream problems can last several more weeks—and occasionally longer, particularly after heavy or long-term use—so a slower recovery does not automatically mean something is wrong.
The safest approach is supportive care, a regular sleep schedule, daytime activity, and treatment for any underlying cannabis-use or sleep disorder. There is no medicine approved specifically by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for cannabis withdrawal.

What cannabis-withdrawal insomnia feels like
Withdrawal-related sleep disruption can look different from ordinary occasional insomnia. Common complaints include:
- Taking much longer than usual to fall asleep.
- Waking repeatedly or lying awake for long periods during the night.
- Sleeping fewer total hours or feeling that sleep is unusually light and unrefreshing.
- Vivid, unsettling or strange dreams after a period in which cannabis reduced dream recall.
- Night sweats or waking with damp clothing or bedding.
Sleep loss can intensify irritability, anxiety, low mood and daytime cravings. That combination can make returning to cannabis feel like the quickest solution, creating a relapse cycle. Cannabis may also have been masking a pre-existing insomnia, sleep-apnea symptom or other sleep problem; stopping can make that condition noticeable for the first time.

When does cannabis withdrawal insomnia start and peak?
Health Canada clinician guidance says withdrawal symptoms generally appear in the first one to two days after discontinuation, peak between days 2 and 6, and resolve for most people within one to two weeks. A 2022 clinical review, Clinical management of cannabis withdrawal, gives the same 24–48-hour onset and days 2–6 peak. NSW Health describes a similar course, with the peak usually on days 2–5.
| Time after stopping or sharply reducing THC | What you may notice | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| First 24 hours | Some people sleep normally; others notice early restlessness, irritability or difficulty settling. | Withdrawal may not be immediate. A symptom-free first night does not rule it out. |
| 24–48 hours | Sleep-onset insomnia, more awakenings, reduced sleep time, vivid dreams or sweating may begin. | This is the usual onset window reported by Health Canada, the clinical review and NSW Health. |
| Days 2–6 | Sleep disruption and other withdrawal symptoms commonly feel strongest; cravings, mood changes and reduced appetite may accompany them. | This is the typical acute peak, not a guaranteed schedule for every person. |
| Days 7–14 | Most acute symptoms begin easing, but sleep may remain fragmented and dreams can still be intense. | Many people improve during this period with consistent routines and support. |
| After two weeks | Residual insomnia or dream disturbance can continue for several weeks. | Heavy users may have symptoms for three weeks or longer. A pediatric clinical guideline notes that sleep disturbance can persist for months in some cases. |
These are ranges, not promises. Baseline THC dose, duration of use, whether stopping was abrupt, nicotine co-use, mental-health conditions and other substances can all change the course. The clinical review specifically notes persistence up to three weeks or longer in heavy users.
Why stopping cannabis can disrupt sleep
With regular THC exposure, the brain and body adapt to repeated cannabinoid stimulation. Removing it abruptly can temporarily disturb the systems that regulate arousal, mood and sleep. The result is not simply “not feeling tired”: people may feel physically keyed up at bedtime, wake easily, or move through unusually vivid dream periods.

Two issues can overlap. First, the sleep disturbance can be a direct withdrawal symptom. Second, cannabis may have been suppressing awareness of an existing sleep or mental-health condition. If loud snoring, breathing pauses, restless legs, panic, depression or trauma-related nightmares were present before cannabis use, stopping is an opportunity to have them assessed rather than assuming every night of poor sleep is withdrawal.
How common is it, and who is more likely to struggle?
Health Canada clinician guidance states that withdrawal symptoms are reported by up to one-third of regular users in the general population and by 50–95% of heavy users in treatment or research studies. The figures come from different populations, so they should not be treated as an individual prediction.
The National Institutes of Health notes that “A person may have withdrawal symptoms after stopping or significantly decreasing heavy or long-term cannabis use, even if they do not have cannabis use disorder.” In other words, withdrawal does not by itself diagnose cannabis-use disorder.

More persistent or severe insomnia is more likely when use was heavy or long-term, stopping was abrupt, nicotine or other drugs are also being stopped, or anxiety, depression, trauma, bipolar disorder or another medical condition is present. Using several substances can make the timeline and safety risks difficult to predict.

World Health Organization guidance describes cannabis withdrawal as being managed with supportive care in a calm environment and symptomatic medication when required. The following low-risk measures fit that approach and can be started at home when no urgent warning signs are present.
- Set one wake time. Choose a realistic time and get up at it every day, including after a poor night. A fixed wake time anchors the body clock more reliably than trying to force an early bedtime.
- Use a short wind-down routine. For the final hour, dim lights, stop demanding work and choose quiet activities such as reading on paper, gentle stretching or a shower. Keep the routine repeatable rather than elaborate.
- Leave the bed if you are wide awake. If sleep is not coming, get up briefly and sit somewhere dim and safe. Return only when sleepy. This prevents the bed from becoming associated with frustration.
- Get morning light and daytime movement. Outdoor light soon after waking and ordinary daytime activity help reinforce a day–night pattern. Avoid turning the entire day into bed rest after a bad night.
- Reduce late-day stimulants and alcohol. Keep caffeine earlier in the day. Alcohol can make you drowsy initially but commonly fragments sleep and can complicate withdrawal, so avoiding it is the safer choice.
- Make the room comfortable. A cooler room, breathable bedding and a change of clothes nearby can make night sweats less disruptive. Keep clocks and phones out of constant view if watching the time increases anxiety.
- Track symptoms briefly. Record the time you stopped or reduced cannabis, approximate sleep, awakenings, dreams, sweating, caffeine, nicotine, alcohol and other drugs. Bring the record to a clinician instead of trying to diagnose yourself from it.
- Plan support for cravings. Tell a trusted person which nights are likely to be difficult, remove cannabis from easy reach and decide in advance whom to contact if you feel close to using again.
These steps support sleep; they do not guarantee an immediate full night. Improvement is usually gradual across the first one to two weeks.

When insomnia persists: treat both problems
If sleep remains substantially impaired after the acute window, ask a clinician about two parallel assessments: treatment for cannabis use and evidence-based insomnia care. Treating only the symptom can leave the relapse trigger in place, while treating only cannabis use may overlook an independent sleep disorder.
Behavioral treatment for cannabis use
The National Institute on Drug Abuse states that behavioral interventions—including cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational enhancement therapy and contingency management—can be effective for cannabis-use disorder. These approaches do not replace medical evaluation, but they can address triggers, cravings, routines and relapse planning.
Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia
When insomnia continues beyond the expected withdrawal period, a clinician can assess whether cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is appropriate. CBT-I uses structured changes to sleep timing, bed–sleep associations and unhelpful thoughts about sleep. It is different from simply receiving general sleep-hygiene tips.

Supportive or supervised withdrawal
People with significant medical illness, a history of complicated withdrawal, major psychiatric comorbidity, polysubstance use or an inability to function safely may need supervised support rather than a solo quit attempt. The 2022 clinical review identifies co-occurring mental-health and polysubstance problems as factors associated with more complicated withdrawal.
Medicines, supplements and products: what is established
NIH and NIDA state that no FDA-approved medicine currently treats cannabis-use disorder or medically assisted cannabis withdrawal. Clinical studies have examined cannabinoid agonists and other prescription medicines, but those findings do not create a safe self-treatment option.
| Option people often consider | What is known | Why clinician review matters |
|---|---|---|
| THC or cannabis products | May temporarily suppress withdrawal sensations but perpetuate cannabinoid exposure; they are not an established withdrawal cure. | Can maintain dependence, impair functioning and undermine an abstinence goal. |
| CBD products | Not an FDA-approved treatment for cannabis withdrawal insomnia; product strength and purity vary. | Potential interactions and uncertain benefit require a medication review. |
| Sedating antihistamines | Not proven to treat the underlying withdrawal process. | Can cause next-day impairment, anticholinergic effects and interactions. |
| Benzodiazepines or other sedatives | May be used only in selected clinical circumstances, if at all; they are not a routine home remedy. | Dependence, overdose and dangerous interactions are important risks, especially with alcohol or other sedatives. |
| “Detox” products and supplements | No reliable evidence establishes them as treatments for withdrawal insomnia. | Ingredients, doses, contamination and interactions may be unclear. |
Do not add, stop or combine a sedating medicine, supplement or substance without asking a qualified clinician or pharmacist, particularly if you take psychiatric, pain, seizure or sleep medicines.

Seek urgent help for suicidal thoughts, hallucinations or other psychosis, severe agitation, inability to care for yourself, chest pain, severe vomiting or dehydration, or dangerous use of multiple substances. Do not wait for the usual withdrawal timeline in these situations.
Arrange a medical assessment when insomnia is so severe that you cannot work, drive or care for dependents; when you have major medical or psychiatric illness; when you have previously had complicated withdrawal; or when symptoms are not improving and you are unsure whether another condition is involved. A clinician can check medications and substance use, screen for depression, mania, anxiety and sleep disorders, and decide whether home support is appropriate.
How to tell whether recovery is on track
Look for a trend rather than a perfect night: fewer awakenings, less intense dreams, more predictable sleep timing and improved daytime function. Temporary setbacks after a stressful day do not necessarily mean withdrawal has restarted. Conversely, worsening symptoms, new psychiatric symptoms, repeated relapse to sleep, or persistent impairment deserve professional review rather than increasingly aggressive self-medication.
