U.S. candy shoppers are buying fewer units even as the category records strong dollar growth. Numerator data reported by Supermarket News on October 15, 2026, show that sales rose by nearly $1.8 billion over the past year while unit volume dropped by more than 770 million. The gap indicates that price increases and a shift toward more expensive products—not increased candy consumption—are driving most of the revenue gain.

The latest U.S. figures describe a category whose cash register growth is diverging sharply from physical volume. The time periods matter: the dollar and unit changes below compare the most recent year, while the longer-term comparisons begin in 2019.

Because spending per unit has risen much faster than unit volume, a shopper can contribute more revenue while placing fewer pieces in the basket. The data do not establish that every candy item rose by the same percentage; the category average also reflects changes in package size, product mix, promotions and the kinds of products households choose.
Are higher prices the main reason units are falling?
Price inflation is the clearest explanation supported by the figures. Since 2019, sales have expanded far more than units, and the average amount spent on each unit has increased substantially. That pattern is consistent with shoppers paying more for comparable purchases, selecting premium or larger-priced products, or both.

Unit counts also measure pieces or packages, not ounces of candy. A household that replaces several small purchases with one higher-priced package can reduce counted units without reducing its total candy volume by the same amount. The available data therefore support a revenue-versus-volume squeeze, but they do not provide a precise estimate of how many calories, ounces or individual pieces consumers eat.
Which candy formats are still growing?
Growth is concentrated in sugary candy outside traditional chocolate. Sugary-candy units are up 16% since 2019, while chocolate unit sales are flat. Gummies account for most of the sugary-candy increase, making the format the strongest growth area identified in the report.

Other expanding niches include sugar-free, low-carb and freeze-dried candy. These formats can appeal to shoppers seeking different textures, dietary attributes or novelty while still participating in the broader candy category. The report identifies Smarties, Albanese, BUBS Swedish Candy and Hot Tamales among brands benefiting from the shift, but it does not provide brand-level sales totals or market-share figures for them.
Why gummies are gaining
Gummies combine a distinct chewy texture with a wide range of shapes, flavors and sour or sweet profiles. Their momentum is a category observation, not proof that every gummy product is growing or that gummies are displacing all other candy on a one-for-one basis.

What “sugar-free,” “low-carb” and “freeze-dried” add
- Sugar-free: Products designed for shoppers limiting added sugar, although “sugar-free” does not mean calorie-free or appropriate for every diet.
- Low-carb: Products marketed around reduced carbohydrate content; formulations and serving sizes vary, so package nutrition panels remain the relevant reference.
- Freeze-dried: A texture-led format that changes the eating experience and can command a different price per package than conventional candy.
How generations are changing the mix
Millennial households increased their non-chocolate candy units per household by 20% since 2019, while their chocolate consumption remained stable. The report attributes the broader chocolate decline to other generations rather than to Millennials reducing chocolate purchases.
This distinction matters when interpreting a flat chocolate result. A stable chocolate total among one generation can coexist with declines elsewhere, while growth in non-chocolate items among Millennials can lift gummies and related formats without increasing total candy units across every household.

Are GLP-1 drugs changing candy consumption?
Households using GLP-1 medications bought 5.4 fewer candy units per household than their earlier purchasing level during the six months ending August 31. The national decline over that same comparison was 4.5 units. GLP-1 households therefore reduced unit purchases more than the overall household measure in this period.
The comparison shows an association in purchase data, not a causal estimate of medication effects. It does not identify which household members used a GLP-1 drug, whether prescriptions were new or ongoing, or whether reduced candy buying reflected appetite changes, dietary advice, price sensitivity or other factors. It also does not show whether those households switched to different snacks or candy formats.

What the trend means for shoppers and the category
For shoppers, the practical result is that a familiar candy budget may buy fewer units than it did several years ago. Comparing package prices alone can be misleading when pack counts and sizes differ, so the useful check is price per ounce or per piece alongside the nutrition panel.
For manufacturers and retailers, the market is splitting into two objectives: protect dollar sales in a higher-price environment and find formats that still add units. Gummies and other non-chocolate, dietary-positioned or novelty products are showing the strongest documented unit momentum, while chocolate is holding level overall rather than expanding.
The evidence does not support saying that Americans have stopped buying candy. It shows a category with modest long-run unit growth, a sharp recent unit decline and much faster dollar growth, with purchasing differences by format, generation and GLP-1-household status.
