Toronto Game Expo is the closest Canadian match for a gaming-first weekend, while Game Con Canada is the strongest Western-Canada alternative. FAN EXPO Canada is far larger, but gaming is one part of a broad pop-culture show. For a true PAX-style festival, compare those Canadian events with PAX East in Boston, PAX West in Seattle and tabletop-focused PAX Unplugged in Philadelphia.
The right choice depends on what you want to play, how far you will travel, how much crowd scale you prefer and whether tabletop or video games are your priority. The dates below are the currently listed editions; verify schedules, venues and ticket rules before booking travel.

What makes an event “like PAX”?
PAX is a family of gaming conventions rather than one single format. Its official press kit describes shows that combine video and tabletop gaming with publisher and independent-developer booths, industry panels, concerts, LAN parties, competitions and other community activities. That combination matters: a PAX visitor can try unreleased or newly announced games, watch a panel, join a tournament, browse hardware or merchandise and spend unstructured time in communal play areas during the same trip.
PAX began with a 4,500-person Bellevue event in 2004. The modern shows retain that gaming-centered identity while adapting to their cities and audiences. PAX East is the practical U.S. comparison for people in Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada; PAX West serves the Pacific Northwest and Western Canada; PAX Unplugged narrows the emphasis to tabletop play.
#1 Best Overall
No Canadian convention duplicates every element of PAX at the same scale. Toronto Game Expo comes closest in its concentration on games, demos, tournaments and free play. Game Con Canada deliberately mixes video games and tabletop activities. FAN EXPO Canada can be a bigger overall weekend, but its gaming content sits beside several other fandoms.
Toronto Game Expo: the closest Canadian gaming-first option
What you will find
Toronto Game Expo’s 2026 figures describe a two-day event with more than 10,000 attendees, over 600 exhibitor tables and more than 100 gaming experiences. Its program spans retro and current games, independent developers, tournaments, cosplay, panels, free-play areas and family activities. The breadth gives you both scheduled events and room to discover games on the floor, which is the central reason it feels more like a gaming festival than a general fan convention.
Who should choose it
- Hands-on players: The published 100-plus experiences and free-play emphasis favor visitors who want to spend substantial time playing rather than only watching panels.
- Indie and retro fans: The exhibitor and programming mix explicitly includes independent developers as well as classic games.
- Toronto-area travelers: A domestic trip avoids a border crossing and the additional planning required for a U.S. convention.
- Families and mixed-age groups: Family activities are part of the stated program, while cosplay and tournaments give older attendees dedicated content.
Trade-offs
Toronto Game Expo is much smaller than the 135,000-plus fan figure published for FAN EXPO Canada’s 2027 Toronto listing. Its smaller footprint can make a gaming-focused itinerary easier to navigate, but it also means fewer total celebrity, media and non-gaming attractions than a mega-convention. The 10,000-plus attendance figure is an organizer-published scale indicator, not a guarantee of a particular wait time or crowd density.
Game Con Canada: Edmonton’s video-game and tabletop blend
Format and programming
Game Con Canada is a three-day Edmonton expo built around video games, board games, esports, demos, retail, artists, celebrities and cosplay. Official pages describe access to hundreds of games, giving the show a broad play-oriented profile without publishing an attendance number comparable to Toronto Game Expo or FAN EXPO Canada.
The explicit inclusion of board games and esports makes Game Con Canada useful for groups whose interests are split between digital and tabletop play. Demos and retail support a browse-and-try day, while tournaments and esports provide scheduled competitive activities.
Who should choose it
- Western Canadian visitors: Edmonton is the domestic option in this comparison for people who would otherwise travel to Seattle for a large gaming convention.
- Mixed video and tabletop groups: The show does not force a choice between digital games and board games.
- Competitive players: Esports and tournaments create a stronger organized-competition angle than a purely retail or celebrity-focused expo.
Timing and limits of the evidence
The currently listed Game Con Canada edition runs June 25–27, 2027. Because the official material does not state a current attendance total, do not infer that its crowd, expo floor or line lengths match PAX or Toronto Game Expo. Check the organizer’s schedule for the final tournament, guest and exhibitor lineup before arranging accommodation.
FAN EXPO Canada: the biggest overall crowd, not a PAX clone
How its gaming content fits
FAN EXPO Canada is a broad pop-culture convention. Its gaming programming includes voice-actor panels, tournaments, classic games and gaming Q&As, but the same ticket also covers comics, anime, film, television, celebrities and cosplay. That makes it a strong choice when gaming is one of several interests rather than the sole reason for attending.
FAN EXPO HQ lists more than 135,000 fans for its 2027 Toronto event. That published figure is substantially above Toronto Game Expo’s 10,000-plus figure, so visitors should expect a much larger overall convention environment. More scale can mean more guests, vendors and parallel programming; it can also mean denser traffic and longer lines. The density point is a practical inference from the published crowd figures, not a measured wait-time statistic.

When FAN EXPO is the better decision
- Choose it if your group includes people interested in comics, anime, film or television as well as games.
- Choose it for celebrity and voice-actor programming that a gaming-only event may not offer.
- Choose it when you want a very large Toronto convention and are comfortable planning around a busy floor.
The listed 2026 Toronto edition is August 27–30, 2026. Its date is separate from Toronto Game Expo’s November 7–8, 2026 weekend, so Toronto residents could attend both for distinctly different experiences rather than treating them as interchangeable events.
PAX East: the most practical U.S. comparison for Eastern Canada
What the PAX formula offers
PAX East in Boston follows the established PAX structure: publisher and indie booths, playable demos, panels, concerts, tournaments and community programming. For a Canadian visitor, that concentration can justify the border crossing when the goal is to experience a large, gaming-led festival rather than a general fandom show.
The PAX press material reports tens of thousands for the inaugural Boston year but does not provide a current attendance figure on the official pages reviewed. Avoid using the early figure as a forecast for the 2026 event.

Travel decision for Canadians
Boston is generally the most practical PAX destination for travelers from Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada, although the best route depends on your departure city and passport or entry-document requirements. The currently listed 2026 dates are March 26–29. The official site lists 2027 dates separately; confirm the exact year before purchasing non-refundable travel.
Rank #4
- Used Book in Good Condition
PAX East is worth the trip when you value the complete festival mix—large expo-floor discovery, scheduled panels, concerts, tournaments and community play—and when the transport and accommodation cost fits your budget. If you mainly want to play games and meet Canadian developers, Toronto Game Expo can deliver the core experience without international travel.
PAX West: the Western Canada alternative
PAX West takes place in Seattle on September 4–7, 2026. Its official description emphasizes a massive expo hall, panels, publisher and studio exhibits, demos, musical performances and tournaments. That profile makes it the natural PAX comparison for British Columbia, Alberta and other Western Canadian travelers, although Seattle travel may still be more expensive or time-consuming than a domestic Edmonton trip.
No current attendance figure is stated on the official pages reviewed. Treat “massive expo hall” as a description of the event’s format, not as a quantified crowd claim. Choose PAX West over Game Con Canada when the PAX brand’s publisher presence, concert programming and established festival structure are priorities; choose Edmonton when avoiding a border crossing and U.S. travel costs matters more.

Why it differs from the other PAX shows
PAX Unplugged in Philadelphia is designed around tabletop gaming: board games, card games, role-playing games, miniatures, Learn & Play sessions, tournaments, free play and exhibitors. It is not simply PAX East with fewer video-game booths. A tabletop-focused itinerary can fill the entire weekend with demos, scheduled sessions and open gaming.

The official 2024 release reported a sold-out three-day event, more than 350 exhibitors and 528,000 square feet of expo halls. Those figures describe the 2024 edition and should not be read as guaranteed 2026 attendance or floor capacity, but they show why this is the strongest U.S. option for tabletop-first travelers. The currently listed 2026 event is December 4–6 in Philadelphia.
Who should make the longer trip
- Board-game, card-game, role-playing and miniature players who would use Learn & Play and free-play areas extensively.
- Groups that want a dedicated tabletop convention rather than a video-and-tabletop balance.
- Travelers willing to go to Philadelphia for a specialized event whose program cannot be replicated by a general Canadian gaming expo.
Choosing by priority
If gaming time matters most
Start with Toronto Game Expo or Game Con Canada. Both put games, demos and tournaments at the center of the event. Toronto is the more clearly quantified gaming-first choice, with published figures for attendees, exhibitors and experiences; Edmonton is attractive for Western Canada and for groups that want explicit video-game, board-game and esports coverage.
If you want the largest social spectacle
FAN EXPO Canada has the largest published crowd figure in this comparison: 135,000-plus fans for the 2027 Toronto listing. Its scale and broad guest roster are advantages for pop-culture omnivores, not evidence that its gaming floor is larger than a PAX show.

Select PAX Unplugged. Game Con Canada is the domestic event here with an explicit board-game component, but PAX Unplugged’s entire identity, programming categories and reported exhibitor floor are tabletop-centered.
If you want the recognizable PAX festival pattern
Choose PAX East from Eastern Canada or PAX West from Western Canada. The PAX press kit’s combination of publisher and indie booths, panels, concerts, LAN or free-play activity and competitions is the defining point of comparison. Canadian events overlap with that formula, but none in the supplied figures claims to reproduce every element at the same scale.
If travel simplicity is decisive
Toronto and Edmonton keep the trip within Canada. Boston is the sensible PAX route for Eastern Canada, Seattle for Western Canada and Philadelphia for tabletop-focused travelers. Compare transport, hotel nights, border requirements and the value of your planned sessions—not just the ticket price.
Quick Recap
Planning a convention weekend
- Confirm the edition and dates. The listed dates are Toronto Game Expo (November 7–8, 2026), FAN EXPO Canada (August 27–30, 2026), PAX East (March 26–29, 2026), PAX West (September 4–7, 2026), PAX Unplugged (December 4–6, 2026) and Game Con Canada (June 25–27, 2027). Recheck the official event calendar before paying for travel.
- Map your must-do sessions. Put tournaments, ticketed tabletop events, panels and celebrity appearances on the schedule first. Leave open blocks for demos, free play and exhibitor discovery.
- Budget beyond admission. Include transport, accommodation, meals, local transit, cross-border costs where applicable and purchases from exhibitors or retail areas.
- Plan for scale. A 135,000-plus fan convention requires more time between rooms than a 10,000-plus gaming weekend is likely to require, although neither published figure predicts a specific queue.
- Build a fallback list. Popular demos and panels can overlap or fill. Identify a second-choice activity in the same time block so a missed slot does not derail the day.
- Recheck access rules. Look for age requirements, separate reservations, tournament registration, cosplay policies, accessibility services and any identification or entry-document rules for U.S. travel.
Bottom-line recommendations
- Best Canadian PAX-like pick: Toronto Game Expo, because its published program and scale are explicitly gaming-first.
- Best Western Canadian domestic pick: Game Con Canada, especially for a video-game, board-game and esports mix.
- Best large all-purpose convention: FAN EXPO Canada, if gaming shares the itinerary with broader pop culture.
- Best U.S. festival for Eastern Canada: PAX East in Boston.
- Best U.S. festival for Western Canada: PAX West in Seattle.
- Best tabletop convention: PAX Unplugged in Philadelphia.
