Short answer: YouTube’s published live-stream guidance does not say whether variable frame rate (VFR) is supported or prohibited. It specifies a maximum of 60 fps and recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding—but CBR describes bitrate, not frame rate. If reliability matters, use constant frame rate (CFR) output when your encoder offers it, test a representative stream, and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
What YouTube’s live-stream guidance says
YouTube’s live encoder recommendations list frame rates up to 60 fps and recommend CBR bitrate encoding. They do not explicitly require a constant frame rate or confirm that VFR input will work reliably. The documented maximum and bitrate recommendation therefore do not settle VFR compatibility. YouTube’s live encoder settings
YouTube also says Live Control Room automatically detects encoder settings and that it transcodes incoming live streams into multiple output formats for viewers. Those descriptions do not explain how YouTube handles variable input-frame timing, so they are not a guarantee of VFR support. YouTube Help
VFR is not the same as variable bitrate
- Variable frame rate (VFR) means the spacing or rate of video frames changes over time.
- Variable bitrate means the amount of encoded data changes over time.
- CBR means constant bitrate. YouTube’s recommendation to use CBR concerns the encoded data rate, not whether frames arrive at a constant cadence.
Changing an encoder’s bitrate mode to CBR does not, by itself, turn VFR video into CFR video.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to reduce risk when streaming with an encoder
- Check frame pacing separately from bitrate. Look for a constant-frame-rate or CFR output option in your encoder. If available, using it is a prudent compatibility measure, not a published YouTube requirement.
- Check the other live settings. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; a frame-rate ceiling of 60 fps; CBR bitrate encoding; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. These are separate settings, not a statement that VFR is supported. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings for codec-, resolution-, and frame-rate-specific bitrate recommendations.
- Test a representative stream before the event. Include movement and audio similar to what you expect to stream. YouTube recommends testing ahead of time and monitoring stream health and messages in Live Control Room. YouTube’s streaming tips
- Leave upload-bandwidth headroom. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend having 20% room above the total stream bitrate. This is a bandwidth margin recommendation, not a VFR compatibility threshold. YouTube’s streaming tips
Do not apply upload guidance as a live-stream rule
YouTube’s separate upload recommendations say, “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.” They list common rates including 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 fps, and say other frame rates are also acceptable. That advice is for uploaded videos; it does not establish a rule for live-stream ingest. YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations
