Yes. YouTube scans all live streams for matches to third-party content, and its guidance does not provide an exemption for a song used only on a starting screen or for a few seconds. While the stream is live, YouTube may warn you, replace the video with a placeholder image, interrupt the stream, or terminate it if the music remains. If you archive the broadcast, a Content ID claim on that recording may come after the stream ends.
What can happen, and when?
YouTube describes two separate stages. An intervention during the broadcast is live enforcement; a Content ID claim on an archived recording is a post-stream action. The distinction matters because a clean-looking archive later does not mean the stream was safe to run live.

Does a short song or starting screen make it safe?
No automatic safe-duration rule is stated in YouTube’s cited guidance. The platform says all live streams are scanned for matches; it does not carve out intro music, a “starting soon” screen, or brief use. A short clip can therefore still be detected. Whether a particular use is legally permitted depends on the rights and circumstances, and cannot be determined from duration alone.
Credit in the description, owning a copy of the song, or declining to monetize does not by itself provide permission to broadcast it. Those points are also not valid reasons, by themselves, to dispute a Content ID claim.

Get permission before using music
YouTube’s livestream terms say the content provider represents that it has the necessary rights for the live content on Google services, including music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers and other royalty participants. Permission needs to cover the intended livestream use; a personal listening license or purchase is not the same thing as broadcast permission. See YouTube Livestream terms and conditions.
If you have a license
Ask the music owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube specifically warns that a licensed stream may still be interrupted if the channel is not allowlisted. Keep written confirmation of the license and any allowlisting request, but do not assume paperwork alone prevents automated live intervention.

If you do not have permission
Use music you created or have expressly licensed for livestreaming, or choose audio whose applicable terms permit your use. Check the license terms for livestreams, archives, monetization and geographic limits rather than relying on a label such as “royalty-free.”

A Content ID claim is not automatically a strike. YouTube says claims typically do not result in copyright strikes; a claim can instead block, monetize or track a video, with the rights owner’s policy varying by territory. A different consequence applies if an active livestream is removed for copyright: YouTube says the channel receives a strike and livestreaming access is restricted for seven days. If the channel receives another strike, the restriction is 14 days. See Understand copyright strikes.
What to do if an archived stream gets a claim
- Review the notice in YouTube Studio. Check the claimed segment, claimant and policy before changing the video or responding.
- Choose an edit if you do not need to challenge the claim. YouTube offers options to trim out the claimed segment, replace the song with eligible YouTube Audio Library audio, or erase/mute the song or video audio. Details are in Remove copyright-claimed content from videos.
- Dispute only on a valid basis. YouTube identifies having the necessary rights, a valid copyright exception such as fair use or fair dealing, or a mistaken match as possible grounds. Credit, owning a copy and not monetizing are not valid grounds on their own. Review Dispute a copyright claim and proceed only if your basis is sound.
