This depends on your phone and VPN app. An app-opening automation can connect a VPN only if the automation system can trigger an action the VPN app supports. Apple and Android also offer system or managed VPN features, but those are not interchangeable with a personal app-open shortcut.
First check whether your VPN app exposes a connect action
Before building an automation, look in your phone’s automation tools and the VPN app for a supported action to connect the VPN. The exact labels and availability vary by operating-system version and app. If no connect action is available to the automation, an app-open trigger alone cannot guarantee a connection.

Also check what happens when you leave the banking app. Some automation setups can run a second action when the app closes; others may only connect on opening. Do not assume the VPN will disconnect automatically unless your setup explicitly supports and is configured to do that.

Personal automation is app-dependent
If your automation tool offers an app-open trigger and your VPN app exposes a usable connect action, you may be able to combine them. The trigger and action are separate requirements: being able to detect that a banking app opened does not mean the phone can command every VPN app to connect. Since the exact phone, software version, and VPN app are unspecified, there is no reliable universal sequence of menu taps to give.

VPN On Demand is a different feature
Apple documents VPN On Demand as a system capability that starts or stops a VPN according to configured rules, including network conditions or connection evaluation. That is not proof that a consumer shortcut can connect any VPN app when a specific banking app opens.
Managed per-app VPN is for managed configurations
Apple’s managed per-app VPN can associate a VPN configuration with designated apps and connect when those apps initiate network communication. On iOS-family devices, this requires device management; Apple’s Always On VPN feature requires device supervision and is an organizational capability. These features are not ordinary personal app automations.

On Android
Check the VPN app and automation tool first
For a personal app-open workflow, confirm that your VPN app provides an action or integration your chosen automation tool can invoke. Android’s platform VPN features do not establish that a particular consumer VPN app supports an app-open trigger.

Android documents always-on and per-app VPN capabilities, and Android Enterprise describes policies for managed devices or profiles. These options depend on the VPN implementation and, for enterprise policy, device-owner or profile-owner management. Google’s consumer Android help also notes that a VPN configured through an app may not offer an always-on option.

Build and verify the workflow
- Identify your setup. Note your phone platform and version, the banking app, the VPN app, and the automation tool you plan to use.
- Confirm the trigger. Check that the automation tool can run when the banking app opens. If you want the VPN to disconnect when the bank app closes, confirm a close trigger is available too.
- Confirm the action. Verify that the VPN app offers a supported connect action to that automation tool. Do not substitute an assumed action name or rely on a feature documented for managed devices as though it were a personal shortcut.
- Configure the automation only after both checks pass. Select the banking app as the trigger and the VPN app’s supported connect action as the response. Follow the prompts shown by your own software; exact screens vary.
- Test without entering banking credentials. Open the banking app and check the phone’s VPN indicator or VPN status before signing in. If the automation opens the VPN app or runs asynchronously, wait until the connection is actually active.
- Check failure behavior. Test what happens if the VPN cannot connect, if you close the bank app, and if you reopen it. If the trigger or action is unavailable or unreliable, do not treat the workflow as active protection.
What a VPN does—and does not—promise for banking
A VPN changes how network traffic is routed, but connecting one does not guarantee that banking credentials or transactions are protected. The cited platform guidance describes routing and configuration, not a guarantee of improved banking security. Follow your bank’s own security guidance and use its official app and connection requirements.
If your bank blocks or warns against VPN traffic, do not try to defeat that restriction. Follow the bank’s instructions; you may need to disconnect the VPN for that service.
