Yes, a phone display can be designed to harvest a small amount of energy from light—but the evidence describes prototypes, not a phone that meaningfully charges itself. Thin-film photovoltaic cells can collect some light escaping from an OLED screen or falling on the display. A 2012 phone-sized estimate put output at up to 5 milliwatts under its stated assumptions, only a fraction of a smartphone’s power needs.
How a display can turn light into electricity
A photovoltaic (PV) cell converts light into electrical energy. In display harvesting, thin-film cells are placed within a display stack or around its edges to collect light that escapes from the screen. This is different from putting a solar panel on the back of a phone: the display design tries to recover some light produced by the phone itself, as well as potentially collect ambient light.

A University of Cambridge team led by Arokia Nathan developed a prototype using thin-film hydrogenated amorphous-silicon PV cells designed to sit within a phone screen and around the edges of an OLED display. The system used a thin-film transistor circuit to smooth the harvested voltage and a thin-film supercapacitor for intermediate storage, rather than sending power directly to the phone battery. IEEE Spectrum reported on the work on January 18, 2012.

The figures below come from different prototypes and conditions. They are not interchangeable: the 2012 phone estimate was based on stated assumptions, while the 2019 result came from a small cell used to power a touchscreen tag.

| Design and source | Reported result | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Cambridge thin-film system, reported by IEEE Spectrum in 2012 | 11% average system efficiency; 18% peak system efficiency | Performance figures reported for the prototype system. |
| Cambridge estimate under the report’s assumption that the PV array converts 5% of ambient light | Up to 165 microwatts per square centimeter | A conditional estimate, not an output specification for an ordinary phone. |
| Cambridge estimate for a typical 3.7-inch smartphone screen | Maximum output of 5 milliwatts | The report said this was only a fraction of a smartphone’s power needs. |
| 2019 touchscreen-tag experiment using one 12.5 mm² thin-film PV cell on the white display of a Samsung Galaxy S8 | About 400 nanowatts at 25% screen brightness; about 7 microwatts at 100% brightness | A study-specific result for powering a small tag, not a phone-charging system. |
The 2012 report quoted researcher Arman Ahnood calling the 5 mW maximum “which is quite useful power,” but the surrounding explanation matters: it was still only a fraction of a smartphone’s demand. The report described the technology as requiring more research before consumer use.
Why the numbers do not translate into self-charging phones
Harvested output depends on the amount and type of illumination, the PV cell’s active area and efficiency, its orientation, and the electronics used to condition and store the power. For light produced by the display, brightness also affects how much light is available to recover. Any harvested energy is therefore conditional on the screen design and operating conditions; a prototype maximum is not a promise of routine charging performance.

The system’s power-management circuit and storage matter too. Smoothing voltage and buffering energy can make a small, variable source usable for a low-power load, but that is not the same as supplying the substantially larger energy needs of a phone. The cited 2012 estimate itself describes the phone-sized output as a fraction of those needs.

Display harvesting is not the same as solar charging
Several ideas get described as “solar phone charging,” but they capture different energy sources and serve different loads.

- Display-light recovery: Thin-film PV cells integrated into or placed around a display collect some light from the active screen. The 2012 OLED concept is an example.
- Ambient-light harvesting: A panel on a phone cover or case collects room light or sunlight. A 2022 study of a phone-cover solar concentrator says ambient-light energy is insufficient for directly charging smartphones, though it may extend operation for low-power functions. The study discusses the cover-based approach and its limits.
- External solar charger: A separate panel or solar power bank collects sunlight to charge a phone. That can be a practical way to use solar power, but it does not show that a phone’s own display can charge the device. A 2018 IEEE abstract reported approximately 12 mW maximum indoor output from a smartphone-sized gallium arsenide (GaAs) solar panel under that study’s conditions. See the IEEE abstract.
- Mechanical harvesting from discarded screens: A 2024 study used discarded smartphone display layers to make triboelectric nanogenerators. The devices harvested biomechanical energy and demonstrated capacitor charging and LED operation; they did not recover light from a working screen. The study describes the discarded-display materials and experiments.
What the evidence establishes
The examples show that thin-film cells can recover light in prototypes and experiments, with output that may be useful for a small, low-power load. They do not establish an integrated display-harvesting smartphone as a consumer feature. The central phone-sized estimate dates to 2012, and the later examples address a touchscreen tag, ambient-light collection, or mechanical harvesting rather than demonstrating a phone battery charged by its own display.
If you want to charge a phone using light, look for a separate solar charger or solar power bank and treat it as an external power source. It is a different solution from harvesting light emitted by the phone display.
