Can Your ISP See Torrent Downloads When You Use a VPN?

Your ISP can usually see that you connected to a VPN, but it generally cannot read the contents of torrent traffic carried inside a properly working VPN tunnel. That protection depends on the torrent client’s traffic actually using the tunnel. It does not hide your activity from every party, guarantee anonymity, or make copyright infringement lawful.

Can my ISP see what I download through a VPN?

When the VPN is connected and the torrent client’s traffic is routed through it, the ISP can see the VPN endpoint and connection metadata. Encryption ordinarily prevents the ISP from reading the contents of traffic inside the tunnel. Traffic patterns may still reveal information, so this is not a promise that an ISP can infer nothing. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) explains that VPN apps generally obscure traffic content from an ISP but do not make users anonymous: FTC guidance on VPN apps.

The important condition is routing: a VPN protects only traffic that goes through its tunnel. If the torrent client sends traffic over the ordinary internet connection, the ISP may be able to observe it without the VPN’s protection.

Who else can see your torrent activity?

Other BitTorrent peers

BitTorrent connects a client to other peers. Those peers can see the IP address used by the client. Proton VPN’s documentation says that when torrent traffic is routed through one of its P2P servers, peers see the VPN server’s IP address rather than the user’s regular public IP. This describes Proton VPN’s service, not a guarantee about every provider: Proton VPN’s P2P server and torrent guidance.

The VPN provider

The VPN provider becomes an intermediary for traffic routed through its servers. The FTC advises people to research VPN apps and review their permissions and privacy policies. A provider’s “no logs” statement is a claim to assess against its policy and available evidence, not proof by itself that no activity can be associated with a user. FTC guidance on VPN apps says: “A VPN app generally isn’t going to make you entirely anonymous.”

How can a torrent client bypass the VPN?

A connected VPN does not automatically mean every app uses it. A torrent client may be configured to use a particular network interface. Proton VPN documents binding a compatible client to the VPN interface; selecting the ordinary internet interface instead can expose the real IP, even when a kill switch is enabled. The exact controls and behavior depend on the client and VPN, so use their own documentation rather than assuming this example applies universally. See Proton VPN’s instructions for P2P routing and client binding.

Before starting a torrent, check that the VPN is connected and that the client’s network-interface setting points to the VPN interface, if your client supports binding. Then verify that the client stops sending traffic if the VPN disconnects. A kill switch and interface binding address different failure modes: do not assume that enabling one guarantees the other is configured correctly.

Does a VPN prevent DNS leaks?

DNS requests are another part of the connection to consider. If a DNS query leaves the VPN tunnel, it may reveal the domain being looked up even when other traffic is tunneled. Protection depends on the service’s implementation and circumstances; Proton VPN documents both its DNS leak protections and limited situations in which queries may leave the tunnel. Those details should not be generalized to every VPN. See Proton VPN’s DNS leak documentation.

What should you check in a VPN before using it for torrents?

  • P2P policy: Check whether the provider permits peer-to-peer traffic and whether any restrictions apply.
  • Routing controls: Look for support for binding a compatible torrent client to the VPN interface, and confirm the setting in the client itself.
  • Disconnect behavior: Find out whether a kill switch is available and how it behaves when the VPN connection drops.
  • DNS handling: Read the provider’s documentation for leak protections and any stated exceptions.
  • Privacy disclosures: Review the privacy policy and terms, and distinguish documented practices from unverified marketing claims.

These checks help identify how a service handles torrent traffic; they do not establish that a provider is anonymous or that its privacy claims have been independently verified.

Does using a VPN make torrenting legal?

No. A VPN changes how traffic is routed; it does not grant permission to share copyrighted material. In the United States, the Copyright Office’s Title 17 materials describe Section 512 notice-and-takedown procedures and, under statutory conditions, a subpoena process to identify an alleged infringer. A VPN should not be treated as protection from a notice or legal process. These materials are U.S.-specific context, not a prediction about an individual case or the rules in other countries. See the U.S. Copyright Office’s Title 17, Chapter 5 materials.
