Yes, but not as an all-or-nothing switch. Psychology treats identity as a set of related layers—personality traits, goals, self-concept and the life story you use to make sense of experience. Those layers can develop at different rates, so you may feel changed while retaining familiar dispositions, or remain recognizably yourself while revising your goals and story.
The strongest evidence supports both continuity and development. Longitudinal studies find stable individual differences alongside changes in narrative meaning, roles and some personality characteristics. They do not show that one event inevitably creates a permanently new person, nor that a specific exercise can guarantee transformation.

What psychologists mean by “identity”
Everyday speech uses identity for several different things. A person might mean their typical behavior, moral commitments, occupation, relationships, sense of belonging, or answer to “Who am I?” Psychology therefore does not reduce identity to one score.

These elements overlap with identity but are not identical to one another. A value can remain important while behavior changes; a role can change while temperament remains familiar; and the story you tell about your past can be revised without erasing the events themselves. One person, three developmental layers
Psychologists Dan McAdams and Bradley Olson offer a practical lifespan framework: the person as actor, agent and author. The layers interact, but they do not mature on one timetable.
The actor: patterns of doing
The actor is the observable person in action: temperament, habitual ways of responding and broad social behavior. Early differences in activity, emotional reactivity or sociability can contribute to later dispositions. These patterns often show continuity, which is why someone can remain recognizably cautious, energetic or compassionate across decades even as circumstances change.
The agent: goals and striving
The agent is the person pursuing aims. As people gain autonomy, they form goals about education, work, relationships, health, creativity and contribution. A new role can reorganize priorities without replacing every trait. Someone who has always been reserved may become more assertive when advocating for a child or leading a project; the goal and context change what the person does.

The author: a developing life story
The author creates an internalized narrative that links remembered events into a sense of unity and purpose. McAdams and Olson write: “Layered over traits and goals, internalized life stories begin to emerge in adolescence and young adulthood, as the person authors a narrative identity to make meaning out of life.” Their review in the Annual Review of Psychology (2010) follows the interplay of these layers into late adulthood; read it at Personality Development: Continuity and Change Over the Life Course.
This model explains why a transition can feel identity-changing. A move, graduation or breakup may alter goals and the interpretation of one’s past while leaving many behavioral tendencies intact. Conversely, daily behavior can shift before a person has developed a satisfying explanation of what the change means.

What the evidence says about personality traits
Personality development is not a choice between “people never change” and “you can become anyone.” A 2024 review by Wiebke Bleidorn evaluates lifespan trait findings, measurement improvements and the contributions of both genes and environments. It reports substantial progress while identifying theoretical questions that remain open. Bleidorn summarizes that “Overall, the field has come a long way toward refining our theoretical understanding of lifespan personality trait development.” The full review is available through the Annual Review of Developmental Psychology.
Trait stability is usually discussed as rank-order stability: whether people who score relatively higher than others tend to remain relatively higher later. A group can retain rank-order differences while its average shifts. For example, many people may become more conscientious on average, yet the most conscientious members of the group can still differ from the least conscientious members. Mean-level change and rank-order stability answer different questions.
Genes help explain why people resemble themselves and relatives, while environments, roles, learning and historical conditions contribute to development. The 2024 review does not turn those influences into a recipe that guarantees a chosen trait change. It is safer to describe probabilities and observed patterns than to promise that a particular experience will permanently alter someone’s personality.
Longitudinal studies show different kinds of change
Studies become clearer when you ask what they measured, who was followed and whether the result concerns averages or individual paths. The findings below are complementary rather than interchangeable.
| Study | Construct | Participants and period | Main finding | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| McAdams and Olson (2010) | Actor, agent and author framework | Lifespan review | Traits, goals and narrative identity develop on different timelines and interact. | It is a framework, not a test that one event causes a specified change. |
| Bleidorn (2024) | Personality traits | Lifespan review | Evidence supports both stability and change, with genetic and environmental contributions. | It does not provide a guaranteed method for changing a chosen trait. |
| McLean and colleagues (online 2021; issue 2022) | Autobiographical reasoning in narrative identity | Four waves over four years; 1,520 narratives from 176–638 emerging adults, depending on the analysis | Moderate rank-order stability, greater stability for exploratory processing than for self-event connections, and different patterns in academic and romantic narratives. | The sample and domains do not represent every identity dimension or prove that a life event caused the change. |
| Lodi-Smith and colleagues (2017) | Self-concept clarity | 461 adults aged 19–86, assessed across three years | Robust rank-order stability, no significant mean-level change across the window, and meaningful variation between individuals. | The result concerns clarity in this sample and period, not a fixed identity across adulthood. |
Narrative identity: four years of autobiographical reasoning
Kate C. McLean and colleagues analyzed how emerging adults reasoned about personal events in academic and romantic stories. Across four waves, the dataset contained 1,520 narratives; the number of participants ranged from 176 to 638 according to the particular analysis. That qualification matters because a single participant count would misrepresent the study’s analytic samples. The PubMed record is at Stability and change in autobiographical reasoning: A 4-year longitudinal study of narrative identity development.

The researchers observed moderate rank-order stability. Exploratory processing—examining possibilities and reconsidering meaning—was more stable than self-event connections, the links people make between an event and who they are. Mean-level patterns also differed by domain and by type of connection. Academic stories and romantic stories therefore did not follow one universal trajectory.

They do not say that every emerging adult becomes more exploratory, that romance or education reliably changes identity, or that a particular event produces a lasting transformation. The work is longitudinal and observational, so it identifies development and associations rather than a controlled causal effect.
Self-concept clarity: stability in the average, variation in lives
Self-concept clarity is the perceived consistency, coherence and confidence of one’s self-beliefs. In a two-wave study, Jennifer Lodi-Smith and colleagues followed 461 adults aged 19 to 86 over a three-year assessment window. They found robust rank-order stability and no significant mean-level change across that period, while individuals differed in their trajectories. The article also reported associations between clarity, trait development and health-related role limitations. The PubMed record is available at Development of identity clarity and content in adulthood.
A stable group average does not mean every participant stayed the same. Some people became clearer, some less clear and some changed little; those paths can cancel out when averaged. Nor does the finding imply that identity stops changing after adolescence. It demonstrates why “Does identity change?” requires a specified construct, age range and time span.
Why the same person can feel different at different times
Roles alter which traits are expressed
Work, caregiving, partnership, education and community roles create different demands and feedback. A person may practice organization in a job, patience in caregiving or independence after moving out. Repeated practice can support trait development, but a temporary performance is not automatically a permanent trait shift.

Goals reorganize attention
When a goal becomes urgent, it changes what is noticed and remembered. A health goal may make routines and bodily signals more salient; a professional goal may make competence-related episodes central to the person’s story. The agentic layer can therefore change before broad trait scores do.
Meaning is revised over time
Autobiographical reasoning is not a literal replay of the past. Later knowledge can change whether an episode is interpreted as failure, protection, luck, injustice or growth. Such reinterpretation can make identity feel newly coherent without changing the historical facts.
Development is an interaction, not a single cause
Genes, environments, relationships, institutions and personal choices continually interact. The same event can have different effects depending on timing, support, prior traits and the meaning assigned to it. That is why a dramatic transition may be central for one person and peripheral for another.
How to interpret “change” without confusion
- Average change: whether the group’s mean score rises or falls.
- Rank-order stability: whether people retain their relative positions compared with one another.
- Individual trajectory: the direction and size of one person’s change.
- Context-specific change: whether development appears in one domain, such as romance, but not another, such as academics.
- Construct change: whether the measured feature itself changed—for example, self-concept clarity rather than every part of identity.
Keeping these terms separate prevents two common errors. A stable average can hide substantial individual movement, while a moving average can coexist with persistent differences between people.

An event can become a turning point in a person’s goals or life story, and repeated changes in roles and behavior may contribute to longer-term development. But the studies summarized here do not establish that any single event reliably causes a lasting identity transformation. They also do not show that a specific intervention, journaling exercise or decision guarantees a new personality.

A careful statement is conditional: an experience may influence identity through the behaviors it prompts, the relationships that follow, the goals it activates and the meaning a person assigns to it. Whether that influence persists depends on subsequent reinforcement and context. Avoid treating a moving anecdote as proof of a universal pathway.
A practical way to examine your own identity
Psychological findings are population-level evidence, not a personal verdict. If you want to understand a change in yourself, separate the layers instead of asking only whether you are “a different person.”
- Name the layer. Decide whether you are noticing behavior, a goal, self-belief, a value, a role or a life-story interpretation.
- Specify the context. Record where the change appears—work, family, friendships, health, education or romantic life.
- Set a time frame. Compare similar situations across weeks or months rather than one unusually good or bad day.
- Check continuity. Identify dispositions, commitments or relationships that remain recognizable alongside the new pattern.
- Track meaning separately from behavior. You may be acting differently without yet having a settled explanation, or telling a new story while everyday habits remain similar.
- Allow mixed evidence. Feeling more confident in one role and uncertain in another is compatible with normal development, not proof that your identity is either fixed or completely reinvented.
Common misconceptions
“Personality is fixed after adolescence.”
Longitudinal evidence supports continuity, but the 2024 lifespan review and the broader developmental literature also document change. “Stable” means predictable to some degree, not immutable.
“Any change in behavior means my personality changed.”
Situations and roles can change behavior immediately. Trait development refers to broader, more enduring patterns, while narrative identity and goals may shift on their own timelines.
“A stable self-concept average means adults cannot change.”
The self-concept-clarity study found no significant mean-level change across three years, yet individuals varied in their paths. The result is about clarity in that sample, not every dimension of identity.
“A powerful story proves causation.”
A turning-point account can be psychologically meaningful without proving that the event alone produced the outcome. Observational studies cannot rule out prior differences, concurrent changes or later experiences.

Taken together, the evidence supports a nuanced answer: identity has continuity, but it also develops. Traits, goals, self-concept and narrative meaning can move at different speeds, and the pattern for one domain or person cannot be promoted into a universal rule.
