For UK Sky subscribers, Sky says you are not entitled to stream Sky outside the UK using Sky apps. A VPN provider may advertise Sky Go access, and a third-party test may report a particular setup working, but neither overrides Sky’s published restriction or guarantees that streaming will work. Before travelling, check whether your programme can be downloaded in advance for offline viewing.
Can UK subscribers watch Sky Go abroad?
Sky Help’s current guidance is explicit: “You’re not entitled to stream Sky outside the UK using Sky apps.” Sky also lists Sky Go as unavailable while travelling in the EU. This guidance concerns Sky’s UK service; it should not be applied automatically to every Sky-branded service, app or subscription market.

For EU travel, Sky lists Sky News, Sky Sports Score Centre and Sky Store as usable, but Sky Go, Sky Sports and Sky Box Office as unavailable. Sky says portability rules apply within the EU, but the UK’s departure from the EU means it cannot provide the service in the same way. Read Sky’s guidance on viewing Sky abroad.

Sky Italia, for example, describes portability for eligible Italy-resident subscribers travelling in the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. That does not establish the same entitlement for a UK Sky subscription.

Does a VPN work with Sky Go?
Some VPN companies promote Sky Go access, and third-party testing has reported that particular provider, device and location combinations worked at a given time. These are not guarantees: results can vary, compatibility can change, and Sky’s own territorial guidance remains the authoritative statement about UK subscribers’ entitlement.
ExpressVPN markets Sky Go compatibility and five UK server locations; that is the provider’s claim, not a statement from Sky or independent confirmation. See ExpressVPN’s Sky Go page.

Top10VPN’s guide, updated July 27, 2026, reports differing test outcomes across providers, devices and locations. Its results are a dated snapshot, not evidence that a VPN will work for every subscriber or continue to work. Read Top10VPN’s Sky Go testing guide.
Neither provider marketing nor third-party test results establish that Sky approves VPN use to watch abroad. A VPN is therefore not a dependable or officially supported way to access Sky Go outside the UK.

What to do before travelling
Download eligible programmes for offline viewing
Sky says some shows and movies can be downloaded over Wi-Fi before leaving home and watched offline abroad. Sky Go Extra guidance says downloads can be watched anywhere after downloading over Wi-Fi in the UK or Republic of Ireland, subject to the customer’s package, device and the title’s availability. Check the specific programme and device, then download it before departure rather than assuming every title is available. Check Sky’s download guidance.
Understand a territory error
Sky says the message “You appear to be outside of the territory…” means you cannot watch in that country, and directs customers to its portability information. The error message also mentions not having used the service in the home territory for more than 30 days as a possible condition in the message. That wording is not a general allowance for UK subscribers to stream abroad; Sky’s separate guidance says they are not entitled to stream outside the UK using Sky apps. See Sky’s territory-error explanation.
