Regular-season and postseason games are local or national
The NFL states: “Live regular season and postseason games are limited to those games available on TV in your local market and national broadcasts.” That means NFL+ is not described as a general out-of-market package for live regular-season games. If a regular-season game is being carried by television in your market, it may be included under the applicable NFL+ live-game rules; a game assigned to another market is not automatically added because your connection appears to come from elsewhere.
Preseason has a different out-of-market offering and blackout caveat
The NFL+ product page describes live local and primetime games on mobile devices, out-of-market preseason games, live game audio, and other features. The terms also say live preseason games are generally subject to local and other geographic blackouts. Therefore, “out of market” does not mean “available everywhere”: a preseason broadcast can still be unavailable in a particular location.
Check the current product description at the NFL+ page and then confirm the exact game in the schedule tool. Features and availability can change by season.
Why a VPN cannot create viewing rights
A VPN primarily changes the apparent network route and IP-based location. Broadcast rights are a separate issue. The league, a television provider, or a streaming service can apply market rules, account checks, device rules, blackout restrictions, or other technical controls. Even if a page loads, that does not prove the game is authorized for your account or location.

How to find the legitimate way to watch a specific game
Use the game, your market, and your intended screen as the starting points. The NFL’s schedule tool is designed to personalize results by location and selected services.
- Identify the exact broadcast. Note the teams, date, kickoff time, and whether the listing identifies the game as local, primetime, national, or preseason. Two games involving the same team can have different rights and blackout treatment.
- Open the NFL schedule tool. Go to NFL Team Schedules & Where to Watch Every Game. Enter your location and select the television or streaming services you already use or are considering.
- Check the market-specific result. The tool’s purpose is to show a schedule based on your location and services. Confirm that the exact matchup appears, rather than assuming that a network carrying another game also carries yours.
- Read the carrying service’s current terms. Check regional restrictions, account requirements, simultaneous-stream limits, supported devices, and any blackout language. The NFL schedule identifies options; the service’s own terms control how its feed is delivered.
- Confirm the screen you will use. NFL+ live regular-season and postseason games are generally available only on phones and tablets under the subscription terms. A mobile-only game may not be cast to a television. If television viewing is essential, verify that the authorized provider supports your television, streaming box, browser, or casting method before paying.
- Test before kickoff. Sign in, update the app or browser, check location permissions where required, and open the game listing before the broadcast starts. A successful login to NFL.com does not guarantee that the live feed is available for every game.

Device limits can matter as much as location
Many viewers focus on the blackout message and overlook the screen restriction. Under the NFL subscription terms, NFL+ live regular-season and postseason games are generally available only on phones and tablets. The terms also say mobile-only games may not be cast to a television.
That creates two separate checks:
- Rights check: Is the game authorized for your market and the service you selected?
- Delivery check: Does that service permit playback on your device, and does it permit casting or television output?
A VPN cannot solve a delivery restriction. A phone that can play a feed may still be unable to send it to a television if the game is designated mobile-only.

What to do when a game is blacked out or missing
First, distinguish a blackout from a missing listing
A blackout message means the service is applying a location or rights rule. A missing game can instead mean that the selected service does not carry that broadcast, the schedule tool has a different market result, or the game is offered through another authorized provider.
Recheck the location information
Confirm the address, market, account region, and device location settings used by the service. If you are traveling, the service may apply rules to your current location rather than your home address. Do not assume that changing one network setting changes every location signal used by an app or website.
Compare the official schedule with the provider listing
Return to the NFL schedule tool, select your actual location, and review the services shown for that game. Then check the provider’s own event page. This catches cases where a provider carries the national broadcast but not the local feed, or where a preseason game has a separate blackout condition.

If the game plays on a phone but not on a television, review the mobile-only and casting language in the current terms. Try the supported mobile app or browser directly instead of assuming that an HDMI adapter, television app, or cast receiver is permitted for that feed.

Contact the service before changing subscriptions
Give support the game, kickoff time, account region, device model, and exact error message. Ask which rule is being applied and which authorized service carries the game in your market. Keep the answer tied to the specific event; rights can differ from one matchup to the next.

It can change the apparent network route
A VPN can make a website see traffic coming through a different network endpoint. That may affect which location a basic IP lookup associates with a connection, but it does not prove that the NFL or a broadcaster will accept that location for entitlement purposes.
It cannot guarantee an authorized stream
Authorization may depend on the subscription, market, device, account information, application behavior, or other checks. The official NFL pages do not publish one universal detection or enforcement rule for all VPN connections. Consequently, there is no reliable, source-supported promise that a particular VPN will reveal an out-of-market regular-season game.
It may complicate troubleshooting
If a service reports an inconsistent location, temporarily using the connection normally supplied by your internet provider can help determine whether the issue is caused by the VPN route or by the account and broadcast rights. This is a diagnostic step, not a way to obtain a game that the service does not authorize.

You are at home in the team’s local market
Use the NFL schedule tool to identify the local television or streaming outlet. If NFL+ is the selected service, confirm that the game is listed for your market and that your phone or tablet meets the device requirement.
You are traveling within the United States
Check the location where you will actually watch. A game that is local at home may be treated differently in another market, while a national broadcast may remain available through its authorized provider. Recheck the schedule close to kickoff rather than relying on a saved home-market assumption.
You want an out-of-market regular-season game
Do not treat NFL+ as a general out-of-market live package: its stated limitation is local-market and national broadcasts. Use the schedule tool to find the authorized provider for your location and the specific game.
