Netflix’s supported-TV guidance treats a television app or streaming device as an internet-connected way to watch. If the TV has no internet connection, the Netflix app cannot stream a show or film, and Netflix does not currently document downloading titles directly to TVs for offline playback.
You can still watch a downloaded title on a larger screen in some setups: download it in advance to a supported phone, tablet, Fire tablet or Chromebook, then play it from that same device. A compatible video cable or adapter may send the picture to the TV, but wireless casting is not guaranteed and Netflix says AirPlay is not supported.

What “without internet” means for Netflix on a TV
A Netflix app built into a smart TV, game console or streaming device is designed to retrieve video from Netflix over an internet connection. Netflix’s Supported Devices guidance describes those products as connecting to the internet to use Netflix. Disconnecting the TV from Wi-Fi, Ethernet or another internet service therefore removes the connection the app needs to start a stream.

This is different from losing Wi-Fi while still having internet through another connection. A TV can use any supported internet path provided by the television or streaming device; the key requirement is an active connection to Netflix’s service. If there is no internet at all, the TV app has no documented offline mode.

Netflix’s current download instructions list mobile and computer device categories, not smart TVs or TV streaming boxes. They do not describe saving a Netflix film to a television’s storage and watching it later with the TV disconnected.
Which devices can download Netflix titles?
Netflix’s current download instructions identify these download-capable categories:
- Android phones and tablets
- iPhone and iPad
- Amazon Fire tablets
- Chromebooks that have the Google Play Store
Older operating-system versions may not support downloads. Eligibility is determined by the device, the Netflix app and the title, so a device on the list is not a guarantee that every film or episode can be saved.
Check whether a title is downloadable
Open the Netflix app on the supported device and look for the Download icon on the film’s details page or beside an episode. If the icon is absent, that title is not available for download on that device or under the current licensing rules. Netflix’s download troubleshooting guidance also explains that not every show or movie can be downloaded.

Where the download lives
A downloaded title remains on the device that downloaded it. Open the app’s Downloads area on that same phone, tablet, Fire tablet or Chromebook to play it offline. Signing in on a TV does not transfer the saved file to the TV, and downloading on one device does not automatically make the title available offline on another.
Download limits and expiration
Netflix says a subscription can have up to 100 active downloads per device, with the number of devices allowed based on the plan. That is a service limit, not a promise that every plan or title has identical availability. Downloads can expire after a title-specific period, and some titles limit how many times they may be downloaded in a year. Netflix does not publish one expiration interval that applies to every download, so check the notice shown in the app.
How to prepare Netflix for a period without internet
Do this while the device is online and before you leave coverage or disconnect the household connection:

- Sign in to the profile that will be used for viewing.
- Open a film or series and confirm that the Download icon appears.
- Select Download. For a series, choose the download control beside each episode you need, or use the available season-download option.
- Wait until the download finishes. Keep the device powered and allow enough free storage for the selected titles.
- Open Downloads while you are still online and confirm that the titles appear there.
- Temporarily turn off the device’s internet connection and start one downloaded title. This verifies that the download is complete and that the app can open it offline.
When the internet is unavailable, return to Downloads rather than searching the Netflix catalog. Catalog browsing, account changes and license checks may require a connection even though an eligible saved title can play offline.

Can a downloaded Netflix title play on a TV?
Sometimes. The practical route is to keep the download on the mobile device and connect that device to the television with a wired video connection. Netflix’s mobile casting and mirroring guidance says an HDMI display requires an adapter that supports video playback. The phone or tablet must also support wired video output; an adapter cannot add a video-output capability the device does not have.
Wired HDMI setup
- Check the phone or tablet manufacturer’s specifications for wired display or video-output support.
- Match the adapter to the device port and the TV’s available input. The adapter must explicitly support video playback, not merely charging or data transfer.
- Connect the adapter to the phone or tablet, connect an HDMI cable from the adapter to the TV, and select that HDMI input on the television.
- Open Netflix on the device, select Downloads and start the saved title.
- If the TV shows no picture, reseat both connections, select the correct input and verify that the adapter is a video-capable model supported by the device.
For Lightning-port iPhones and iPads, Netflix identifies Apple’s Lightning Digital AV Adapter. For USB-C iPhones, it recommends Apple’s USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter while noting that other adapters may work. Some iPhone models do not support wired video output, so confirm the exact model before buying an adapter. The same compatibility principle applies to Android phones, tablets and other devices: check the model’s video-output support rather than assuming that any USB-C connector carries a display signal.
What this setup does not do
The cable does not download anything to the television. The mobile device remains the playback device, and disconnecting it stops the video. The TV is acting as an external display for the device that holds the Netflix download.

Wireless options depend on both the source device and the receiving equipment. Netflix explicitly says AirPlay is not supported. Casting is available only with compatible devices, and Netflix’s guidance does not promise that a title saved for offline use can be cast to a TV while both devices are offline.

For that reason, do not plan an offline trip around wireless casting unless the exact device combination is documented as compatible and you have tested it beforehand. A wired connection is the more predictable option when the goal is to show a mobile download on a larger screen without internet access.

Troubleshooting common offline-viewing problems
The TV says it is offline
This is expected if you are trying to use the TV’s Netflix app with no internet. Switch to the device that contains the download. If you need the TV’s larger screen, use a tested wired video connection instead of the TV app.
There is no Download icon
Check that the app and operating system are current, that the device is one of Netflix’s listed download categories and that you are viewing the title’s details page. Some titles are not licensed for download. Netflix’s download article lists title and device restrictions; an absent icon is not fixed by changing the TV settings.
The download has disappeared or will not start
Downloads can expire, and certain titles have annual download-count limits. Reconnect the device to the internet, open the Downloads section and read the message attached to the title. If the title is still eligible, download it again before the next offline period. Because expiration rules vary by title, do not assume that every saved film lasts the same number of days.

The device reports insufficient storage
Remove watched or unwanted downloads from the device, then download only the episodes or films needed for the trip. The 100-active-download figure is a Netflix service limit; it does not guarantee that a phone or tablet has enough physical storage to hold that many videos.
The HDMI adapter shows a blank screen
- Confirm that the adapter is designed for video playback, not charging alone.
- Verify that the phone or tablet model supports wired video output.
- Make sure the TV is set to the HDMI input used by the cable.
- Reconnect the adapter and cable firmly and test another HDMI input if available.
- Check the device maker’s compatibility information before replacing hardware.
If the exact phone model does not support wired video output, changing adapters will not make that model display Netflix on the TV.
Wireless casting fails offline
Do not treat a successful online cast as proof that an offline download can be cast. Netflix does not support AirPlay, and its casting guidance limits the feature to compatible devices. Use the downloaded device’s own screen or a compatible wired display path.
A reliable checklist before disconnecting
- Identify the device that will hold the downloads; it must be an Android phone or tablet, iPhone or iPad, Amazon Fire tablet or Chromebook with Google Play Store.
- Confirm a Download icon for every title you want.
- Allow for storage and the plan’s active-download limit of up to 100 per device.
- Open Downloads and test playback with the device offline.
- Check the expiration or download-count notice shown for each title.
- If using a TV, verify wired video output, adapter support, HDMI cable and the correct TV input before travel.
- Do not rely on AirPlay or assume that wireless casting works without internet.
Netflix first introduced downloads in a November 30, 2016 announcement, describing the ability to save a film or series and watch it later without an internet connection. That historical announcement explains the feature’s purpose, but the current device list and limits come from Netflix’s present Help Center guidance.
