The Openreach box installed for full-fibre broadband is an Optical Network Terminal (ONT), not a Wi-Fi router and not a traditional modem. It converts the fibre signal into Ethernet. You can normally connect that Ethernet handoff to the WAN/Internet port of your own router, then enter the broadband settings required by your internet provider.
Whether the connection works depends on your provider’s own-router policy and technical requirements. Those can include PPPoE credentials, a VLAN tag, IPv6 settings, device registration and, if your package includes telephone service, a supported voice arrangement.

What the Openreach box actually does
Openreach describes the installed unit as an Optical Network Terminal. Its job is to terminate the fibre line and present your broadband service over Ethernet. It does not provide the routing, firewall, Wi-Fi or usually the telephone functions supplied by an ISP router.

The ONT stays with the property
Do not remove or replace the Openreach ONT. Openreach treats it as essential property infrastructure, and it remains at the address when you move. Your replacement project is therefore limited to the router connected after the ONT; the fibre termination itself stays in place.
When using your own router is allowed
There are two separate questions: can your router technically connect, and does your broadband plan permit it? A router can support the right protocols yet still be unsuitable if the provider requires its own hardware for a particular service.

Technical requirements
BT Business states that a replacement router or firewall connected to an Openreach modem needs an Ethernet WAN port and the ability to establish a PPPoE session with the username and password supplied for the service. In other words, a router with only DSL, cable or mobile WAN hardware is not enough; it must accept Ethernet on its Internet/WAN interface and run PPPoE when the provider uses it.
Plan and equipment restrictions
Policies differ by provider and plan. Vodafone allows non-Vodafone routers on some plans, but requires its router for Pro, 5G Broadband and plans that include Digital Voice. It also requires customers who use their own router to obtain their broadband username and password.

- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Digital voice is the most common reason a technically working replacement fails to deliver the complete service. If your package includes a phone number, confirm whether the provider supports voice on third-party equipment before disconnecting the supplied router.
Check these details before unplugging anything
- Identify the ONT. Find the powered Openreach unit where the fibre terminates. Its active Ethernet socket is normally labelled LAN or PORT 1. Do not confuse it with the ISP router.
- Read the provider’s own-router policy. Check whether your exact plan allows third-party routers. A policy for standard fibre may not apply to Pro, 5G Broadband or Digital Voice packages.
- Obtain authentication details. Ask the provider for the broadband username and password if they are not already documented. PPPoE cannot authenticate without the credentials your ISP issued.
- Record service-specific parameters. Ask whether your access requires VLAN tagging, which VLAN ID and priority to use, IPv6 settings, a registered MAC or serial number, and any MTU value.
- Plan for telephone service. Confirm whether your own router supports the provider’s voice arrangement or whether the supplied router must remain connected for calls.
- Keep the original router. Third-party equipment may not be covered by the provider’s main technical helpdesk. You may be asked to reconnect the supplied router during fault diagnosis.
How provider settings differ
There is no universal “Openreach router setting.” The fibre access network and the retail ISP determine the login and tagging details. The examples below show why copying settings from another provider can leave your line offline.

| Provider or source | Documented requirement | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| BT Business | Ethernet WAN and PPPoE using the supplied username and password | BT Business says third-party equipment is not supported by its main technical helpdesk and may need to be reconnected for diagnosis. |
| Plusnet | PPPoE; VLAN enabled; VLAN ID 101; VLAN priority 0 | These are Plusnet’s published fibre values, not a default for every Openreach service. |
| Vodafone | Own routers permitted on some plans; broadband username and password required | Vodafone requires its router for Pro, 5G Broadband and plans with Digital Voice. |
| Zen | VLAN and PPP behaviour varies by access network | Use the settings for your specific access network rather than assuming one Zen profile applies everywhere. |
| Openreach ONT | Ethernet handoff from the fibre termination | The ONT itself does not provide Wi-Fi or a usable standalone Internet connection. |
Connect your router to the ONT
- Leave the ONT powered. Do not unplug the fibre unit or move its optical connection.
- Disconnect the ISP router’s WAN cable. Leave the ISP router available in case you need to restore it.
- Run Ethernet from the ONT. Plug one end into the active LAN/PORT 1 socket on the ONT. Use the port identified by your provider if it specifies a different handoff.
- Connect the other end to your router’s WAN/Internet port. Do not use an ordinary LAN port for the ONT cable; the router must treat the connection as its upstream Internet interface.
- Power up the replacement router. Wait for it to complete startup before changing settings.
- Open the router’s administration interface. Select the Ethernet Internet/WAN connection type and choose PPPoE when your provider requires it.
- Enter the ISP credentials. Type the supplied PPPoE username and password exactly, including any punctuation or suffix shown by the provider.
- Configure VLAN only when instructed. If your ISP publishes a VLAN requirement, enable tagging and enter its exact ID and priority. For example, Plusnet publishes VLAN ID 101 and priority 0. Do not add VLAN 101 merely because the service uses Openreach fibre.
- Apply IPv6 and other provider settings. Enable IPv6, set MTU, or register a MAC/serial value only when the ISP specifies those items.
- Save and test. Confirm that the router reports an authenticated WAN session, then test a wired device before configuring Wi-Fi or mesh nodes.
What to look for in a replacement router
Choose equipment against your provider’s requirements first, then assess wireless performance. The following capabilities matter more than a high headline Wi-Fi number:
| Capability | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Ethernet WAN speed | The ONT presents Ethernet, so the router’s Internet port is the link that limits the service. | Confirm that the WAN port can handle your subscribed broadband tier. The available speed is determined by your provider and address; Openreach advertises services up to 1,600 Mbps, but that is not a typical or guaranteed speed for an individual line. |
| PPPoE support and performance | Many providers require the router to create the authenticated PPPoE session. | Check that PPPoE is supported on the WAN interface and that the hardware can route at your target speed with PPPoE enabled. |
| VLAN tagging | Some providers place broadband traffic on a specified VLAN. | Verify that the router can tag the WAN connection and enter the provider’s VLAN ID and priority. |
| IPv6 | Your ISP may offer or require IPv6 in addition to IPv4. | Check the provider’s IPv6 method and whether the router supports it on a PPPoE connection. |
| Wi-Fi coverage and mesh | These determine wireless coverage after the WAN link is working. | Match the router or mesh system to the size and construction of your home rather than relying only on the advertised wireless class. |
| Voice compatibility | Digital Voice may depend on provider-specific equipment or an ATA arrangement. | Confirm support before cancelling or returning the supplied router. |
Digital Voice: the important exception
Broadband authentication and telephone service are separate functions. Openreach documentation says ATA and voice arrangements depend on the communication provider. A third-party router can therefore deliver Internet access while leaving the phone service unavailable.

Before switching, ask the provider whether it supplies SIP or other voice credentials, supports an approved analogue telephone adapter, or requires its router to handle voice. Vodafone’s policy illustrates the restriction: plans with Digital Voice require its router. If your ISP has the same type of requirement, keep the supplied unit connected for telephony even if you use another router for data, provided the provider supports that arrangement.
Troubleshoot a failed connection
The router shows no WAN link
- Check that the Ethernet cable runs from the ONT’s active LAN/PORT 1 socket to the router’s WAN/Internet port.
- Try a known-good Ethernet cable and confirm that both devices are powered.
- Reconnect the ISP router. If it also fails, the issue may be the ONT, fibre service or provider network rather than your configuration.
The WAN link is active but PPPoE will not authenticate
- Re-enter the username and password supplied by the ISP; do not substitute the account email address unless the provider explicitly uses it for PPPoE.
- Confirm that the WAN type is PPPoE rather than DHCP or a static IP profile.
- Ask the provider whether the account is restricted to its router or whether the credentials must be requested separately.
Authentication works but there is no Internet traffic
- Check whether your provider requires a VLAN tag. If it does, enter the exact VLAN ID and priority; if it does not, remove an unneeded tag.
- Review IPv6, MTU and any MAC or serial registration requirement with the ISP.
- Test with one wired computer connected to the replacement router. This separates WAN configuration from Wi-Fi or mesh problems.
Internet works but the telephone does not
- Check the provider’s voice policy and whether your plan includes Digital Voice.
- Ask whether an ATA, SIP credentials or the supplied router is required.
- Reconnect the ISP router if the provider requires it for voice or for support diagnostics.
Support, resets and moving home
Save the original router, its power supply and its configuration details. BT Business warns that its main technical helpdesk may not support third-party equipment and may require the supplied router during fault diagnosis. Being able to restore the original setup lets the provider test the service without first debating your custom configuration.
The ONT remains at the address when you move. A future occupant or a new provider may use the same fibre termination, but the router, PPPoE credentials, VLAN profile and voice policy belong to the broadband service rather than to the ONT itself.

You can generally plug your own router into an Openreach FTTP ONT: Ethernet from the ONT to the router’s WAN port, followed by the ISP’s required PPPoE, VLAN and other settings. The decisive checks are your provider’s permission, the exact configuration for your access network and whether your plan’s telephone service requires the supplied router. Keep that router available until both Internet and voice services have been proven on the replacement.
