You cannot use XMRig to GPU-mine Electroneum (ETN) on the current mainnet. Electroneum replaced mining with Proof of Responsibility in 2021, and its current Electroneum Smart Chain (ETN-SC) uses IBFT consensus. XMRig’s AMD and NVIDIA GPU support does not change the network’s consensus rules.
Why XMRig cannot mine current ETN mainnet
Mining software can contribute work only to a network that accepts the corresponding proof-of-work algorithm. Electroneum’s official history says Proof of Responsibility went live in 2021, replacing mining with a validator network. Its developer documentation describes current ETN-SC as using IBFT consensus. Electroneum’s milestone history and developer documentation describe those changes.

As a result, building XMRig on Ubuntu or adding a GPU backend cannot make it produce accepted mining work for current ETN mainnet. The official XMRig algorithm list does not include Ethash, either. XMRig’s algorithm list is separate from the chain’s consensus rules.

XMRig documents AMD GPU mining through OpenCL and NVIDIA GPU mining through an external CUDA plugin. It also supports CPU mining. These are hardware backends, not universal coin support: the coin or network must use a compatible algorithm and accept proof-of-work in the first place. XMRig recommends a JSON configuration file because command-line options do not expose every feature. That flexibility does not provide an ETN mainnet mining configuration; the current consensus makes the proposed task incompatible.
Build XMRig on Ubuntu for a supported use
If your goal is to build XMRig for a coin and algorithm it supports, its official Ubuntu guide gives this general source-build outline. These steps install and compile XMRig; they do not enable current ETN mining.

- Install the listed dependencies:
git,build-essential,cmake,libuv1-dev,libssl-dev, andlibhwloc-dev. - Clone the XMRig repository, create a build directory, and enter it.
- From the build directory, run
cmake ... - Compile with
make -j$(nproc). - For NVIDIA GPU use, install CUDA and build the separate
xmrig-cudaplugin as described in the official guide.
Follow the current commands and prerequisites in XMRig’s Ubuntu build guide, since build requirements can change.

Do not confuse legacy mining or private networks with mainnet
Legacy Electroneum chain
Electroneum’s migration documentation says future coinbase emissions on the legacy system go to a burn address after the migration hard fork. Old instructions for legacy mining therefore should not be presented as a way to earn current mainnet ETN. See Electroneum’s migration documentation.

Private ETN-SC networks
Electroneum documents Ethash proof-of-work as an option for private networks. That is a separate development scenario, not the consensus mechanism of current mainnet. XMRig’s published algorithm list does not include Ethash, so its GPU backend support does not establish that XMRig can mine such a private network. See Electroneum’s private-network documentation.
Only consider a private-network proof-of-work setup if you are deliberately building or administering that network and have confirmed its configuration and compatible mining software. It is not a substitute route for earning ETN on mainnet.
