A Windows PC or compatible Windows gaming handheld can use the Xbox PC app to install supported PC games and run them locally. A supported smart TV does not install the Windows version of a game; it uses the Xbox app to stream eligible titles through Xbox Cloud Gaming. TVs and streaming devices have model, country, subscription, controller and catalog restrictions.
Microsoft and Xbox change supported models, plan benefits and game availability regularly. Treat the checks in this guide as prerequisites, not guarantees that every Game Pass title works on every screen.

Local installation on Windows
When a game is listed for PC, the Xbox PC app downloads its PC build to the computer or Windows handheld. The device supplies the processor, graphics hardware, memory and storage, so the title must meet its own minimum requirements. An active subscription does not turn a console-only listing into a native PC game.

Cloud streaming on a TV or other supported device
Cloud Gaming runs the game on Microsoft’s remote hardware and sends the video and audio to your screen while your controller inputs travel back. A TV therefore needs the Xbox app, an eligible account and a supported controller, but it does not need PC installation space. Cloud availability is title-specific and is not identical to the PC catalog.
The official material does not establish a universal bandwidth, latency or performance number. Your actual experience depends on the connection, network congestion, device, region and controller link, so do not treat any generic speed figure as an Xbox guarantee.
Using Game Pass on a Windows PC
What you need
- A Windows 11 gaming PC covered by Microsoft’s current Xbox app guidance.
- The Xbox app installed and signed in with the Microsoft account that owns the subscription.
- An active plan that includes the PC game you want, or another entitlement shown on that game’s current listing.
- Enough free storage and hardware that meets the individual game’s requirements.
Installation steps
- Update Windows and open the Xbox app. Sign in with the account carrying your Game Pass entitlement.
- Search for the title and open its full product page rather than relying on a search thumbnail.
- Confirm that the page offers a PC install and read the listed operating-system, processor, graphics, memory and storage requirements.
- Select Install, choose an available drive or library location, and wait for the download to finish.
- Launch from the Xbox app or Windows. If the game uses a separate publisher account or launcher, follow the sign-in prompt shown for that title.
Game Pass coverage is catalog-based. A title can be available on Xbox consoles or in the cloud without having a PC build, and a PC listing can have different requirements from its console edition. Check the listing each time you install because catalogs and entitlements change.
Cloud play on a PC
Cloud gaming is an alternative to downloading a PC build when your device, region and subscription support it. It is still a streamed session, not a way to install a console-only game as a Windows program. Use the cloud-play control shown by Xbox for the specific title and account.

Using Game Pass on a Windows handheld
Windows handhelds
A Windows-based handheld that supports the Xbox PC app can install compatible PC titles using the same catalog and app path as a Windows desktop. The small screen and integrated controls do not change the game’s technical requirements. A title may install successfully yet need lower settings, a frame-rate adjustment, controller remapping or an external display to be comfortable.
Check the exact model, Windows edition, storage capacity, graphics capability and button layout. The official guidance confirms the broad Windows handheld route but does not provide a complete, permanent model-by-model compatibility list. Do not infer that every handheld with a similar shape is supported.
Non-Windows handhelds
SteamOS and other non-Windows devices require separate verification. The cited Microsoft guidance does not establish native Xbox PC-app support for a particular non-Windows handheld, so do not promise that a specific model can install Game Pass PC games. Cloud play may be offered through a supported browser or app route, but availability and controls must be checked for that device.

Handheld setup checklist
- Confirm that the handheld runs a supported Windows version and can install the Xbox PC app.
- Sign in to the Xbox app with the subscribed Microsoft account.
- Open the game’s listing and distinguish PC install from cloud play.
- Compare the game’s requirements with the handheld’s processor, graphics hardware, memory and available storage.
- Before a long download, test the controls and display at the game’s default settings; adjust input mapping and graphics if necessary.
Using Game Pass on a smart TV
What the TV actually does
On a supported television, the Xbox app launches a cloud session. The TV is a display and streaming endpoint; it does not run the Windows PC executable locally. You need a compatible controller because the TV remote is not a substitute for game input.

Xbox’s current TV page lists selected Samsung and LG smart TVs and selected Amazon Fire TV devices. Eligibility is selective by model, year and country, and the list can change. Open the current Xbox on TVs page and verify the exact model before buying or setting up hardware.
LG availability
In its April 23, 2025 launch announcement, Xbox said the app was available on select LG models and described cloud play for Game Pass Ultimate members in more than 25 countries. That statement applies to the launch context; it is not proof that every LG television or every plan has the same access today. See the LG Xbox app announcement and the current device list together.
Hisense and V homeOS rollout
On January 5, 2026, Xbox announced that the app would come to select Hisense and V homeOS-powered smart TVs during 2026. This is announced, rolling availability, not a blanket statement that all models or regions are live. Check the television’s app store and Xbox’s regional information before describing it as available. The announcement is documented at Xbox’s Hisense and V homeOS update.

TV setup steps
- Find the television’s exact model number and country or region setting.
- Use the TV app store to search for the Xbox app. If it is not listed, check whether a supported streaming device can provide the app route.
- Install the app, open it and sign in with the Microsoft account that has the eligible subscription.
- Pair a compatible Xbox wireless or other controller supported by the host TV or streaming device. Pairing instructions and supported controller types vary by host hardware.
- Open a cloud-enabled game and confirm that the title is available to stream under your account. If the play button is absent, the issue may be the plan, region, catalog or device rather than the controller.
Subscription and catalog checks
There is no single permanent entitlement table covering every Game Pass plan, device and game. Most cloud games require an active eligible subscription, but the exact benefit is determined by the current plan terms, region and title page. The LG launch announcement specifically named Ultimate for that launch. An August 27, 2025 Xbox Insider update described a test involving participating Core and Standard subscribers; that test should not be presented as a permanent entitlement for all subscribers.

Before paying for a plan or device, verify all of these items in the current Xbox listing:
- The game has a PC version if you plan to install it on Windows.
- The game is marked for cloud play if you plan to use a TV or browser.
- Your specific subscription includes that access in your country.
- The title has not left the catalog or become restricted to another edition.
When a TV has no Xbox app
A missing app on the television does not automatically mean cloud gaming is impossible. Xbox identifies selected streaming devices, including selected Fire TV hardware, as another route. Support still depends on the exact device model, software version and country. Confirm the app listing and controller support for that device before purchasing it. If your current TV already runs the Xbox app, replacing it is unnecessary.

The Xbox app is missing
Recheck the exact model and region, update the TV or streaming device, and search its official app store. Availability can differ between nearly identical models sold in different countries. A supported external streaming device may be the remaining option.

Open the game’s full listing and look for a PC edition. Game Pass does not make every console title a Windows title. If only console or cloud access is shown, install is not supported through the PC app.

The game installs but runs poorly on a handheld
Compare the title’s requirements with the handheld’s hardware, then lower resolution or quality settings, cap frame rate, close background applications and check controller mapping. Installation confirms app compatibility, not a performance guarantee.
The TV cannot start a cloud session
Verify the account, plan, country, title’s cloud status, app version and controller pairing. Sign out and back in after an account change. If the title is unavailable under the current entitlement, changing controllers will not add access.

What to verify before you commit
- Device model, operating system and country.
- Xbox app presence and current software version.
- Whether the game is in the PC catalog, cloud catalog or both.
- Current subscription entitlement for that title and region.
- Controller compatibility and pairing method.
- For local play: storage and the game’s hardware requirements.
- For cloud play: a reliable connection and acceptable responsiveness in your own setup; Xbox’s cited pages do not promise a universal speed or latency threshold.
As of October 2026, the safest answer is therefore device-specific: install supported PC games on Windows PCs and supported Windows handhelds; stream eligible games through the Xbox app on selected TVs and streaming devices; and verify the exact model, region, plan and title immediately before purchase or setup.
