Can You Use Wireless Headphones With an Audio Interface? What Works for Monitoring

Usually, not directly: an audio interface must specifically support Bluetooth headphone output, or you need a compatible external transmitter. Bluetooth built into an interface may only receive audio from a phone. For recording vocals or instruments, wired headphones plugged into the interface are the more dependable monitoring choice because they avoid adding a wireless link to the live signal.

First check what the interface’s Bluetooth feature actually does

Bluetooth support is model-specific. An interface may receive audio from a phone without being able to transmit its mix to Bluetooth headphones. Look in the manual for explicit headphone pairing or Bluetooth headphone output; do not infer it from the presence of Bluetooth alone.

For example, the Vocaster Two Studio user guide, version 3, says the unit cannot pair with Bluetooth headphones. Its Bluetooth feature handles audio streaming from a phone to the interface and sends audio back to a phone caller. The guide gives an approximately seven-metre range in open space for that device; obstacles or reaching the limit can cause dropouts. That range is a product specification, not a general Bluetooth guarantee.

For recording, use the interface’s wired headphone output

When monitoring a live microphone or instrument, connect wired headphones to the interface’s headphone output. Direct monitoring routes the input to the interface’s headphone or line outputs while the DAW records it. Focusrite describes this as listening with near-zero latency; that guidance concerns the direct monitoring path, not a promise that every software or wireless setup has no delay. See Focusrite’s explanation of direct monitoring.

If you hear a delay from software monitoring, Focusrite’s guidance is to enable direct monitoring and mute the track being recorded so you do not hear the delayed software return alongside the direct signal. The precise controls vary by interface and DAW, so follow their manuals.

Match the plug size and wiring

Before connecting headphones, check both the socket and the plug. A 3.5 mm plug will not fit a 6.35 mm socket without an adapter, and a headset microphone connection is not the same as stereo headphone wiring.

Headphone plug Interface socket What to do
6.35 mm TRS stereo Compatible 6.35 mm headphone output Connect directly.
3.5 mm TRS stereo 6.35 mm headphone output Use a 6.35 mm-to-3.5 mm TRS stereo adapter.
3.5 mm TRRS headset plug, with microphone Stereo-only TRS headphone output The headphone audio may connect, but the headset mic signal is not carried by that output. Use suitable headset routing or a separate microphone input if you need the mic.

Focusrite notes that a TRRS headset plug includes a microphone connection, while a stereo-only headphone output does not accept that mic signal; the mismatch can make audio sound filtered or imbalanced. Its guidance on the distinction and adapter use is in Why does audio from my headset sound unusual? and the Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen hardware guide.

Example: Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen

The Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen has a 6.35 mm TRS headphone output, while its rear line outputs are intended for an amplifier or active monitors. Focusrite recommends headphones up to 300 ohms for this specific model; do not treat that figure as a universal interface limit. Check the exact hardware guide for your interface before choosing an adapter or headphones.

Could an external Bluetooth transmitter work?

Potentially, if the transmitter accepts an analog output available on your interface and is compatible with the headphones. This is an added signal path, not a way to pair headphones with an interface that lacks Bluetooth headphone output. Compatibility depends on the specific output, transmitter, headphone connection and routing.

There is no universal Bluetooth latency figure established here, so a transmitter should not be assumed suitable for live vocals, instruments or performance monitoring. For casual playback, verify the signal path and whether the delay is acceptable for your use. For real-time recording, wired monitoring is the safer choice.

Choose the right output and computer routing

A headphone output, line output, USB port and Bluetooth receiver serve different roles. For instance, the Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen headphone jack is intended for headphones, while its rear line outputs are for an amplifier or active monitors. Focusrite recommends connecting headphones or speakers directly to the interface for monitoring; see Do I Need Speakers Connected to My Audio Interface? and its guidance on monitoring audio from a computer’s internal outputs.

Computer driver behavior also depends on the operating system and DAW. In the Windows DAW workflow described by Focusrite, ASIO uses one device for input and output; WDM can allow different devices, but the article warns that doing so introduces significantly more latency for recording. Check your own interface and software documentation rather than assuming this behavior applies to every setup.

Quick setup checklist

  1. Find the exact interface model in its manual and confirm whether Bluetooth transmits to headphones or only receives phone audio.
  2. Locate the headphone output; do not substitute a line output or USB port without checking the manual.
  3. Check whether your headphone plug is 6.35 mm TRS, 3.5 mm TRS or TRRS. Use a correctly wired size adapter when needed, and remember that a stereo headphone output will not carry a TRRS headset microphone.
  4. For live recording, connect wired headphones to the interface and use direct monitoring if software monitoring introduces an audible delay.
  5. If considering a Bluetooth transmitter, verify its input and routing against the interface, then decide whether its delay is acceptable for the task.
