No. Vinegar is not an approved default for cleaning solar panels. None of the manufacturer or government cleaning guidance cited below recommends it. Every source that addresses cleaning agents points to water as the baseline, and several explicitly say to avoid harsh chemicals. Whether any other agent is acceptable depends on the exact panel maker, so a method that one brand allows cannot be assumed for your array.
Why vinegar is not a safe default
The concern here is approval, not a laboratory result. No cited manufacturer or government source tests or endorses vinegar on panels. Solar Victoria’s consumer guidance says, “They should not use harsh soap or chemicals – usually water is enough.” The Australian Government energy department tells owners to consult their system documentation or installer rather than improvising. LG and PREFA both steer owners toward specific water types and non-abrasive materials and away from cleaning agents in general.

That is why the conservative answer is to leave vinegar out unless your panel maker explicitly approves it in its own documentation. This is not a claim that vinegar will damage every panel. It is a claim that the official guidance does not support it, and that a cleaning product outside the approved list can complicate a warranty claim.
What each source recommends
The sources differ on water quality and tools, so the table below keeps each recommendation tied to its publisher, country and product scope.

| Source (scope) | Recommended approach | Water and agents | Tools | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Solar Victoria consumer guidance (Victoria, Australia) | Gentle hosing in appropriate circumstances; professional service for very dirty or hard-to-reach panels | Usually water is enough; no harsh soap or chemicals | Long-handled soft-bristled broom for debris reachable from the ground at a single-storey house | Check warranty terms before cleaning work. The page does not show a publication date. |
| Australian Government energy department (national, Australia) | Follow system documentation or ask an installer for a maintenance schedule; a qualified person should clean panels | Not stated | Not stated | Says cleaning may be needed in dusty conditions. The page does not show a publication year. |
| Canadian Solar customer support (North America) | Modules with sufficient tilt may not need cleaning; otherwise wash with water during a cool part of the day | Water, with water-quality and pH considerations in its detailed advice | Non-abrasive implement such as a sponge | Do not rub dry dirt. Product-specific guidance. |
| LG Electronics (United States) | Strongly discourages owners from cleaning their own arrays because of potential dangers | De-ionized water for a do-it-yourselfer; advises against tap water and cleaning agents | Non-abrasive brush; no abrasive brushes | Where DIY cleaning is done, follow the module instructions because this water guidance differs from other sources. |
| PREFA PREFALZ (UK extranet, product-specific) | Soft cloth or sponge with treated water | Treated water; no harsh cleaners | Soft cloth or sponge; no abrasive or aggressive materials | States some prohibited practices can void warranty. |
| PV.de / REC quick guide (older guidance) | Standard garden hose at domestic pressure | Not stated | Prohibits pressure or steam cleaners and high-pressure hoses | The file name suggests it dates from 2013. Check current REC documentation for your module. |
Do you need to clean at all?
Cleaning is a maintenance judgment, not a fixed schedule. None of these sources gives a figure for how much output cleaning recovers, so treat it as a question of soiling and access rather than a guaranteed gain.
- Tilted panels often self-clean. Canadian Solar says modules with sufficient tilt may not require cleaning, and rain often sheds ordinary dust on a slope.
- Flat or dusty sites are where cleaning matters more. The Australian Government energy department notes that dusty conditions may call for cleaning.
- Visible, persistent soiling is the usual reason to act, but check the manual before choosing a method.
If you clean the panels yourself
Only attempt this if your module documentation permits owner cleaning and every task can be done from the ground.

- Read the module manual and warranty first. Look for the approved water type, approved tools and any prohibited practices. Solar Victoria advises checking warranty terms for cleaning work, and PREFA warns that some prohibited practices can void warranty.
- Confirm the panels are reachable from the ground. Solar Victoria describes a long-handled soft-bristled broom for debris reachable from ground level at a single-storey house. Do not climb onto or stand on panels. A brush, pole or garden hose does not make a roof safe to access.
- Choose a cool part of the day. Canadian Solar advises washing during a cool part of the day.
- Use the water type your manual specifies. LG recommends de-ionized water and advises against tap water. Solar Victoria says usually water is enough. Canadian Solar includes water-quality and pH considerations. Where the manual is silent, ask the installer or manufacturer before using anything other than plain water.
- Use only a soft, non-abrasive implement. Use a soft sponge, cloth or brush that the manual allows. Do not rub dry dirt, dry scrape, or use abrasive brushes.
- Keep water pressure low. Where the manual allows a hose, REC’s older guidance permits a standard garden hose at domestic pressure. Pressure washers, steam cleaners and high-pressure hoses are prohibited in that guidance.
- Leave out cleaning agents unless the maker approves them. This includes vinegar, which none of the cited sources endorses.
When to hire a qualified professional
- Panels that need a ladder or a climb. Solar Victoria recommends a professional for very dirty or hard-to-reach panels, and the Australian Government energy department says a qualified person should clean panels to avoid damage and ensure safety.
- Any work that brings you near electrical components. LG strongly discourages owners from cleaning their own arrays because of potential dangers.
- Warranty-sensitive arrays. If the manual or warranty restricts owner cleaning, a professional service that documents its methods can protect your claim.
When you book a service, ask which water and cleaning agents it uses and whether they match your module manual. A reputable provider should be able to answer that directly.
