Can You Use the Coax Cable in Your Walls for Home Ethernet?

If you have coax outlets in the rooms you want to connect, MoCA adapters can turn the existing coax wiring into a wired home-network link. You do not need to run a new Ethernet cable, but the coax outlets must connect through a usable path, and splitters, amplifiers, or gateway equipment can affect compatibility.

What cable in the wall can carry your network?

The cable this setup uses is coaxial cable: the same general type commonly used for cable television and broadband connections. MoCA (Multimedia over Coax Alliance) networking carries network traffic over compatible coax wiring already in a home. An Ethernet cable alone cannot use a coax wall outlet; you need MoCA adapters to bridge between Ethernet and coax.

First identify the wall outlet and cable. A coax connector is typically a round threaded fitting, but the appearance of an outlet does not prove that it is connected to the other rooms or to the coax run near your router. If the cable is telephone wire or another type, this MoCA setup does not apply.

How a two-adapter MoCA connection works

The usual arrangement has one adapter beside the router or gateway and a second in the room where you need a connection. Ethernet links each adapter to the router or device; coax links the adapters through the home’s existing wiring.

ScreenBeam ECB7250K02 Network Adapter Starter Kit Bonded MoCA 2.5 - Fastest
  • Faster than Wi-Fi: The ECB7250 uses your home's coax cables to deliver internet speeds up to 2.5 Gbps, surpassing Wi-Fi speeds. Actual speeds can be affected by various factors like cable quality and other MoCA devices on the network.
  • Get the Best Speeds and Bandwidth: The 2.5Gbps network ethernet port for high-speed internet is ideal for 4K streaming, gaming, and remote work. It's backwards compatible with 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet connections.
  • Skip the Wi-Fi! Use existing coax cables for wired Ethernet connections in your home. MoCA Adapter 2.5 delivers faster, more reliable speeds than Wi-Fi for up to 16 nodes on one network. You can also use these to connect remote Wi-Fi access points.
  • Check MoCA Compatibility: You will need 1 ECB or a MoCA compatible router or 2+ ECBs for non-MoCA routers. Most FiOS routers have MoCA built-in. Connect ECBs in each room with coax for wired access and switches to the ECBs for more ethernet connections.
  • Device Compatibility: This MoCA adapter for ethernet over coax works with most devices and routers with an ethernet port. However, some DOCSIS 3.1 modems might conflict (frequency overlap) and cause random disconnects. Check with your ISP for a fix.
  1. At the router or gateway: Connect an Ethernet cable from a LAN port on the router or gateway to the Ethernet port on the first MoCA adapter. Connect that adapter’s coax port to the nearby coax outlet or to the appropriate coax connection.
  2. At the destination room: Connect the second adapter to the coax outlet. Run Ethernet from that adapter to the computer, console, television, or other device. You can also connect an access point there if you want to extend Wi-Fi.
  3. Check the gateway first: Some gateways already support MoCA, so a separate adapter may not be needed at that end. Confirm the gateway’s capabilities and instructions before buying or connecting equipment.
  4. Verify the link: Confirm that both adapters establish a connection and check their status or PHY-rate indicators if available. A successful link is not by itself a guarantee of any particular internet speed.

Verizon describes coax adapters as a way to bring a wired connection to a room with a coax outlet, but its best-performance conditions include MoCA 2.5 support across connected devices and no other LAN traffic or interference. Those are provider-specific conditions, not a promise that every setup will reach the standard’s published maximum. Verizon’s coax-adapter guidance

Check the coax path before relying on it

Wall outlets only help if their cables are connected into a usable path. The arrangement of splitters and other equipment matters; so can cable type, distance, and the signal requirements of any existing coax service. The MoCA installation guide recommends home-run wiring where practical and checking link PHY rates after installation.

Hitron MoCA 2.5 Network Adapter (2-Pack) NOT a Modem - Extends Internet Over Coax | NOT for Satellite/AT&T U-Verse | Works Cable/Fiber/DSL | Requires Connected Coax
  • ⚠️ NETWORK ADAPTER - NOT A MODEM OR ROUTER: This device extends your EXISTING internet through your home's coax cables. It works WITH your current modem and router, not as a replacement. Connects to your router via Ethernet, then uses coax outlets to create wired network connections in other rooms. Perfect for streaming, gaming, and home offices where you need reliable wired connections.
  • 🚨 DOES NOT WORK WITH AT&T U-VERSE OR SATELLITE TV WIRING: ❌ AT&T U-verse uses HPNA technology which conflicts with MoCA - this product will NOT work with U-verse service. ❌ If your home was EVER wired for DirecTV, Dish Network, or AT&T U-verse satellite service, MoCA will HIGHLY LIKELY NOT WORK. Satellite/U-verse installations reconfigure coax wiring by isolating outlets or disconnecting them from the main splitter. Even if you no longer have these services, the wiring changes usually remain.
  • ✅ COMPATIBLE INTERNET SERVICES - IF COAX IS PROPERLY WIRED: Works with Cable internet (Comcast/Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox, Optimum, Mediacom), Fiber internet (Verizon Fios, Google Fiber, Frontier Fiber), DSL, or other non-U-verse services. Your internet type doesn't matter - what matters is that your coax outlets are interconnected through a main splitter (standard cable TV configuration, NOT satellite or U-verse wiring). Delivers up to 1 Gbps speeds.
  • 🔌 REQUIRED: INTERCONNECTED COAX NETWORK: All coax outlets must connect to a central splitter for MoCA to work. ❌ WILL NOT WORK with: AT&T U-verse service (uses conflicting HPNA technology), Satellite TV wiring (DirecTV/Dish/U-verse satellite), isolated coax runs not connected to a splitter, or homes with no coax outlets. ✅ COMPATIBILITY TEST: If you previously had traditional cable TV service and could watch TV from multiple room outlets, your wiring is likely compatible.
  • 🔧 POE FILTER - CABLE INTERNET USERS ONLY: If you have cable internet with a DOCSIS 3.1 or 4.0 "high-split" modem (common with Comcast/Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox), you MUST install a Point of Entry (POE) filter at your main cable entry point or MoCA will NOT function properly. The filter prevents interference from high-split cable modems. Fiber internet and DSL users do NOT need a POE filter. U-verse users cannot use this product regardless of filter.
  • Splitters: Intervening splitters need to work with the signals on the coax network. The MoCA guide recommends using a splitter if non-MoCA signal levels permit, or a directional coupler when they do not.
  • Amplifiers: An RF amplifier that is not MoCA-compatible can block or disrupt the MoCA path. The guide says to keep a non-MoCA-compatible amplifier outside the MoCA network.
  • Cable type and distance: The guide recommends RG-6 as a practical in-home balance of attenuation and installation ease, and says to avoid RG-59 when possible because it has higher attenuation. For a cable path longer than 300 feet, it recommends RG-6 or RG-11 and checking PHY rates.
  • Existing coax services: MoCA uses coax spectrum, so consider other services sharing the cable and the equipment connected to it. The Alliance lists usable spectrum of 400–1675 MHz for MoCA Home 2.5; check device and service compatibility rather than assuming all coax equipment can coexist unchanged.

If the adapters do not link or perform as expected, trace which outlets connect to the same coax network, inspect the splitters and amplifier arrangement, and consult the equipment instructions or a qualified installer before changing shared wiring.

When a point-of-entry filter is appropriate

A point-of-entry (PoE) filter can help keep MoCA signals from leaving the home and reflect signals back into the home. The MoCA guide calls for placement at the demarcation point, after any RF amplifier output. Placement is layout-dependent, not a reason to put a filter in front of every gateway.

  • DEVICE INTERFACE: 1 x MoCA Coax: F-Type Female coax input; 1 x RJ-45 Gigabit LAN port. Comes with 2 x TMO-312C MoCA 2.5 Ethernet over Coax Adapters
  • NDAA + TAA COMPLIANT: With our NDAA and TAA compliant MoCa Adapters, you can plan and install networking solutions that Government customers demand today (U.S. and Canada Only)
  • ENHANCE YOUR WIFI NETWORK & COVERAGE: Through a reliable wired network, MoCA Coaxial Alliance 2.5 technology extends a high-speed Triple Play network delivering consistent video and voice bandwidth with lowered latency
  • MOCA 2.5 TECHNOLOGY: Supports Multimedia over Coaxial Alliance 2.5 with improved packet error rate technology that delivers consistent voice and 4K HD video bandwidth with lowered latency.
  • MORE RELIABLE STREAMING & GAMING: The increased speed and bandwidth of your network means more reliable streaming, gaming, clear HD and 4K video, among other critical working from home needs and applications.

In particular, the guide says not to place the filter in front of newer gateways that support MoCA. A filter in front of an older cable modem, gateway, or set-top box might be needed; check with the equipment vendor. Because placement depends on the demarcation point, amplifiers, and gateway capabilities, verify the specific layout before installing one.

What the published MoCA 2.5 numbers do—and do not—mean

The MoCA Alliance lists MoCA Home 2.5 at “2.5 Gbps” MAC throughput and “< 2.5 ms” average one-way latency. These are published technology specifications, not independent tests of a particular home and not guaranteed end-to-end internet speed or total internet latency. Actual performance depends on the connected equipment, coax path, and network conditions.

Hitron HTEM5 MoCA 2.5 Network Adapter (2-Pack) - Extends Network via Coax | NOT a Modem/Router/WiFi | Requires Cable TV Wiring (NOT Satellite) | Works with Cable & Most Fiber (NOT AT&T) | 2.5 Gbps
  • ⚠️ NOT A MODEM OR ROUTER - NETWORK ADAPTER ONLY: This is a MoCA network adapter that extends your existing network using coax cables. It does NOT provide internet service and does NOT replace your modem or router. You must have an existing internet connection and router to use this product.
  • ⚠️ SATELLITE WIRING INCOMPATIBILITY: If your home was ever wired for satellite TV (DirecTV, Dish Network), the satellite company likely cut or disconnected your in-home coax network. This product will NOT work with cut or isolated coax wiring. Before purchasing, verify your coax outlets are interconnected—if you previously had satellite service, ask your current provider if they reconnected your home’s coax network.
  • ❌ NOT COMPATIBLE WITH AT&T FIBER: AT&T Fiber’s implementation causes signal interference with MoCA. Works with all other internet types (Cable, Verizon Fios, Google Fiber, etc.) as long as your home has an active, interconnected coax network.
  • ✅ WIRING REQUIREMENTS - VERIFY BEFORE BUYING: Requires coax outlets (round screw-on connectors, NOT satellite F-connectors) in multiple rooms that connect to a main splitter. Does NOT work with isolated coax runs, phone lines (RJ11), or Ethernet cables. Check that your coax outlets are part of an interconnected network, not separate isolated runs
  • EXTENDS YOUR NETWORK: Converts your home’s coax cable wiring into high-speed ethernet connections. Perfect for connecting devices in rooms far from your router without running new cables. Achieves up to 2.5 Gbps speeds over existing coax. WORKS WITH: Cable internet (Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox, etc.) and most fiber services (Verizon Fios, Google Fiber, etc.).

Use adapter link information, such as PHY rates where available, to assess the connection in your own wiring. A nominal standard capability cannot account for the internet plan, router, device, other network traffic, or coax components in a particular installation. MoCA Alliance: MoCA Home 2.5

ITU-T’s G.9960 recommendation describes wireline home-network transceivers that can operate over telephone wiring, coax, and power-line wiring. IEEE 1905.1a describes an abstraction layer spanning technologies including powerline, Wi-Fi, Ethernet over twisted pair, and MoCA 1.1 over coax. These standards show that multiple networking media exist; they do not provide a controlled, representative home-by-home speed ranking. ITU-T G.9960 · IEEE 1905.1a

What to confirm before buying adapters

  • There are coax outlets at both the router location and the destination room.
  • The outlets are connected to the same usable coax network, rather than disconnected or isolated runs.
  • The router or gateway’s MoCA support is known, so you can determine whether an adapter is needed at that end.
  • Splitters and amplifiers along the path are suitable for the intended MoCA connection.
  • The adapter specifications and certification match the network and devices you plan to connect. The MoCA Alliance’s certified-product listing includes Ethernet-to-coax adapters and describes certification as independent testing for specification compliance and interoperability. MoCA certified products

If those checks pass, a pair of MoCA Ethernet-over-coax adapters is the retrofit hardware to look for. If the coax path is unknown, map or verify it before treating an outlet as a ready-made network connection.
