Can You Use Tesla Full Self-Driving in Germany or Other European Countries? (October 2026 Guide)

Germany is not currently listed by Tesla as a supported country for Tesla Assisted Driving (also called FSD Supervised). Tesla’s current Netherlands support page lists the Netherlands, Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark, Belgium, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Croatia. It says activation is blocked where approval has not been granted. A Dutch approval therefore does not, by itself, authorize use in Germany. Availability also depends on your Tesla’s hardware, software, model, trim, model year, region and account status.

Where the system is permitted, it remains supervised driver assistance rather than autonomous driving. You must watch the road, stay ready to take over and remain legally responsible for the car.

Which European countries currently support Tesla Assisted Driving?

Tesla’s “Tesla Assisted Driving” support page for the Netherlands, accessed on 13 October 2026, lists eight European countries where the feature is currently available:

Country Listed by Tesla as available? Important qualification
Netherlands Yes RDW issued the original provisional type approval.
Lithuania Yes Availability still depends on the individual vehicle and software.
Estonia Yes Check the live Tesla country page before using the feature.
Denmark Yes National availability does not necessarily mean EU-wide authorization.
Belgium Yes Vehicle configuration and account eligibility still apply.
Slovenia Yes Use the current Tesla listing because approvals can change.
Czech Republic Yes The Czech transport ministry announced recognition of the Dutch provisional approval on 21 September 2026.
Croatia Yes Confirm the vehicle’s software and hardware eligibility.
Germany No listing Tesla’s current published list does not include Germany.

Tesla says the feature is blocked in regions without approval. If a vehicle enters a country that has not approved the system, the car warns the driver and then switches the feature off. That means a feature working in the Netherlands should not be treated as permission to use it after crossing into Germany.

Why Germany cannot be assumed to have access

European Union membership does not automatically make an approval valid in every member state. The approval history in 2026 shows why country-by-country status matters.

The Netherlands approval

On 10 April 2026, the Netherlands Vehicle Authority (RDW) announced a type approval for Tesla FSD Supervised. RDW said the approval allowed use in the Netherlands at that time. It also described a separate route for wider EU authorization: an application to the European Commission, a vote by member states and a majority decision in the responsible committee. RDW expressly stated that its approval was then valid only in the Netherlands.

Czech recognition

On 21 September 2026, the Czech Ministry of Transport announced that the Czech Republic recognized the Dutch provisional approval under Article 39 of Regulation (EU) 2018/858. The ministry said the system could be used in the Czech Republic under the conditions attached to that approval. This is a national recognition step, not proof that every EU country has automatically authorized the feature.

What is known about Germany

Germany is absent from Tesla’s current eight-country list. The official material considered here does not establish a separate German recognition decision or confirm that the later EU-wide committee process has been completed. Do not convert a projected rollout, an informal report or an approval in another country into a claim that the system is legal in Germany.

For a trip or purchase decision, check Tesla’s live country-support information and current guidance from German authorities immediately before relying on the feature. Country status can change faster than a printed article.

What Tesla Full Self-Driving does in Europe

Tesla may use different labels by market. The Dutch support page calls the feature Tesla Assisted Driving, while RDW and the Czech ministry refer to FSD Supervised. The label does not change the driver’s legal duties.

Tesla says the supervised system can, under active driver supervision:

  • Change lanes.
  • Take the correct turn for a navigation route.
  • Navigate around vehicles and objects.
  • Make left and right turns.

These are driving tasks performed with the driver’s continuous oversight. RDW describes the system as an advanced driver-assistance system and states: “A vehicle with FSD Supervised is not self-driving.” The Czech Ministry of Transport classifies it as SAE Level 2 partial driving automation.

What Level 2 means for you

Level 2 can assist with steering, speed and other driving functions, but it does not transfer responsibility to the vehicle. You must participate in traffic, keep your eyes on the road, keep your hands available to take over and intervene immediately when the system asks or when the situation requires it. Tesla’s own guidance likewise says you remain responsible for the driving task.

How country approval, EU authorization and vehicle eligibility differ

There are three separate checks, and passing one does not guarantee the others.

  1. Country permission: The country must permit the system under its applicable approval or recognition process.
  2. Tesla’s regional activation: Tesla must have enabled the feature for that country and software release. Its support page says activation is blocked in regions without approval.
  3. Your vehicle’s eligibility: Tesla says availability varies by hardware, software, model, trim, model year and region. An update may be required.

A country appearing on Tesla’s list therefore means the service is offered there in principle, not that every Tesla can use it. Conversely, a vehicle equipped for the feature in one country does not establish a right to activate it elsewhere.

What happens when you cross a border?

Tesla says the system will warn you and then switch off after the vehicle enters a country that has not approved it. Plan for the possibility that assistance will become unavailable at or after the border; do not begin a journey assuming the system will continue seamlessly.

Before leaving a supported country

  • Check Tesla’s current supported-country page on the day of travel.
  • Confirm that your exact vehicle shows the feature as available in its menus or Tesla account.
  • Install any required software update before departure, where practical.
  • Review the route for countries whose approval status differs from the departure country.

After the feature is disabled

Continue driving manually and follow normal traffic rules. A warning or deactivation is not a signal to troubleshoot while moving. Stop only where it is safe, then verify the country status, software version and vehicle eligibility. If the feature should be available but remains disabled, contact Tesla support with the vehicle identification and software information.

European and US versions are not interchangeable

Do not use demonstrations or owner reports from the United States as a direct guide to European behavior. RDW says European and US vehicles use different software versions and that their FSD Supervised versions are not comparable one-to-one. Regulatory restrictions, road rules, mapped behavior, monitoring requirements and available maneuvers can therefore differ even when the marketing name looks similar.

An imported vehicle, a different model year or a car that received a US software configuration should be checked separately. Tesla’s country and vehicle eligibility guidance takes precedence over assumptions based on another market.

What the Dutch authority tested

RDW published figures about its assessment in 2026. These are RDW’s reported testing and data-review figures, not an independent consumer benchmark or a guarantee of zero accidents.

Figure What RDW said it represented
More than 3,000 hours RDW testing on test tracks and public roads, covering different road types, complex and busy urban traffic, and varied and extreme weather.
More than 1,000 test runs RDW test runs conducted in accordance with European regulations.
1.8 million kilometres European driving data included in RDW’s assessment.
Nearly 40,000 vehicles and approximately 24 million kilometres RDW’s 17 June statement reported this Dutch fleet activity since type approval, without relevant incidents at that point.

RDW also said it independently reviewed Tesla’s data-collection and statistical-analysis processes and used its own tests and equipment. The fleet figure is a dated authority report, not evidence that the feature is risk-free or that a private driver can stop supervising it.

A practical checklist for drivers based in Germany

  1. Check the country list: Look at Tesla’s live support information immediately before the trip. Germany is not on the list reflected here.
  2. Check your car: Verify the exact model, trim, model year, hardware and software version. Tesla says all of these can affect availability.
  3. Check the account and menu: Confirm that the feature is actually enabled for your vehicle rather than relying on a prior owner’s statement or a US-market video.
  4. Update before travel: Install a required software update when you have a reliable connection and enough time to verify the result.
  5. Plan for manual driving: Treat every border crossing as a point where the system may warn and deactivate.
  6. Supervise continuously: Keep your eyes on the road, remain ready to steer or brake and take over immediately whenever needed.
  7. Recheck after regulatory changes: Tesla’s list, national recognition and feature naming can change, so an old forum post or article is not sufficient evidence.

Common misunderstandings and the correct interpretation

“The Netherlands approved it, so Germany must allow it.”

Incorrect. RDW said its original approval was valid only in the Netherlands. The Czech Republic later announced its own recognition step, while Germany remains absent from Tesla’s published list in the information available here.

“It is called Full Self-Driving, so I can stop watching.”

Incorrect. The European authorities describe supervised Level 2 assistance. You remain responsible and must be prepared to take control at all times.

“A Tesla with the right hardware works everywhere.”

Incorrect. Tesla lists hardware, software, model, trim, model year and region as eligibility factors. Regulatory permission and vehicle activation are separate questions.

“No relevant incidents in RDW’s reported fleet means no risk.”

Incorrect. RDW’s statement is a dated report about a defined fleet and assessment. It does not remove the need for supervision or guarantee a particular outcome on your route.

“The US version proves what the European version can do.”

Incorrect. RDW says regional software versions and functionality differ, so US demonstrations cannot establish European capability or legality.

How to verify the answer on the day you drive

Use two sources together: Tesla’s current country-support and eligibility information, plus the relevant national authority’s latest guidance. Confirm the exact country, vehicle and software combination rather than relying on the feature name alone. If those sources do not clearly establish permission, drive manually and seek clarification from Tesla or the competent authority before activating the system.
