Not safely as a general rule—and Tesla’s published guidance does not establish that hands-off-wheel driving is approved across Europe. For Autopilot and Tesla Assisted Driving Basic, Tesla says to keep your hands on the steering wheel. Its newer Tesla Assisted Driving (TAD) page lists the feature in eight European countries and requires eyes on the road and readiness to intervene, but does not explicitly authorize keeping your hands off the wheel. “Hands-free” must not be taken to mean eyes-off-road, unsupervised, or autonomous driving.

Tesla’s UK support guidance describes Autopilot and Tesla Assisted Driving Basic as driver-assistance features that require active supervision, not autonomous driving. It instructs drivers to stay alert, keep their hands on the steering wheel, and maintain control. If the car does not detect sufficient steering-wheel torque, it issues escalating audio and visual prompts; repeatedly ignoring warnings can lock out Autopilot for the rest of the trip. Tesla’s UK Autopilot guidance also says Autosteer is intended for motorways with a centre divider and clear lane markings, and that the driver must hold the wheel and signal to initiate an assisted lane change. Instructions and behavior may differ by model or regional software version.

Tesla Assisted Driving
Tesla’s Netherlands support page describes TAD as a supervised package that can perform route-following maneuvers, lane changes, turns, and parking assistance. It requires the driver to keep eyes on the road, be ready to intervene, and remain responsible; Tesla explicitly says the package does not make the car fully autonomous. The page does not expressly confirm that hands-off-wheel operation is permitted, so its description is not a basis for assuming that it is. Tesla says activation and use in other countries depend on further development and regulatory approval, and that the feature is blocked in unapproved regions. This is a published country list, not a promise that every Tesla in a listed country is eligible. Availability can depend on the vehicle’s configuration, hardware, software, model, trim, model year, and location. Tesla’s support page and the manual for the specific vehicle are the relevant checks.
Hands-free is not hands-off supervision
Wheel contact and driver supervision are separate questions. Even if a particular system or setting does not require continuous hand contact, that does not permit looking away, using a phone, sleeping, or handing responsibility to the car. Tesla requires TAD drivers to watch the road and be ready to intervene; its UK guidance for Autopilot and Tesla Assisted Driving Basic says to keep hands on the wheel and maintain control.

The regulatory framing is consistent with that distinction. UN Regulation No. 171 describes Driver Control Assistance Systems as supporting rather than replacing the driver. Its introduction states: “DCAS assist the driver, when operated within the system boundaries, but do not completely take over the driving task, thus the responsibility remains with the driver.” The regulation characterizes such systems as SAE Level 2 partial automation, with responsibility for control and supervision remaining with the driver. How to check the rule for your car and country
- Identify the exact feature name. Distinguish Autopilot or Tesla Assisted Driving Basic from Tesla Assisted Driving; names and available functions are not interchangeable.
- Check Tesla’s support page for your country. Confirm whether TAD is listed and whether Tesla states that the feature is approved for use there.
- Read the onboard owner’s manual. Use the manual on the vehicle touchscreen and look for the instructions for the installed driver-assistance feature, including hands-on-wheel requirements and intervention warnings.
- Follow the car’s prompts and current instructions. A country listing alone does not establish eligibility for a specific vehicle or change its supervision requirements.
Why regional behavior can differ
Regulatory requirements can affect how an assisted-driving feature operates. In a 2022 service bulletin covering specified model years and configurations, Tesla corrected Navigate on Autopilot behavior related to assisted lane changes, noting that certain regulations required the driver to initiate them manually. That bulletin is historical and applies to the vehicles it specifies; it is not a complete statement of current European requirements. Tesla Service Bulletin SB-22-00-007 R1, dated 29 July 2022.
