Can You Use Starfield Mods on Xbox Without Disabling Achievements?

Yes. Xbox players can install Starfield Creations, Bethesda’s supported in-game mod and content system. However, achievements are disabled by default for a Creation unless that individual Creation is currently labeled Achievement Friendly. Check the label before installing anything on a save where Xbox achievements matter.

What “mods” mean in Starfield on Xbox

On Xbox, the supported way to add user-created content to Starfield is through the game’s Creations menu. Creations can add gameplay changes, quests, items, visual adjustments and other content without requiring the separate file-management process commonly used for PC mods. Bethesda’s support documentation treats these downloads as Creations, so that is the term you will see in the game and in Bethesda’s listings.

Starfield is listed for Xbox Series X|S and includes Xbox achievements as a supported capability on the official Xbox product page: Xbox’s Starfield listing. The same listing may show access through current Game Pass plans; subscription terms, prices and regional availability can change, so check the store page for your account and region.

Do Starfield Creations disable achievements?

Bethesda’s rule is conditional, not absolute: “Creations will disable achievements in Starfield unless they are tagged as ‘Achievement Friendly.’” That is the wording in Bethesda Support’s answer to the question, Does using Creations disable achievements in Starfield?

Therefore, there are two relevant cases:

Creation label Effect on achievement progress What to do when achievements matter
Achievement Friendly Bethesda identifies the Creation as eligible to leave achievements enabled. Verify the live label immediately before downloading and keep checking after updates.
No Achievement Friendly label Bethesda’s default rule means achievements are disabled while that Creation is active. Do not install it on the save you intend to use for achievement progress.

The status belongs to each individual Creation. Installing one friendly Creation does not make every other Creation on the same save friendly, and a friendly label is not a blanket approval for a creator’s entire catalog.

What “Achievement Friendly” covers

Bethesda introduced the Achievement Friendly option in its November 19, 2024 Starfield update. The announcement described the change as applying to certain Creations released through the Verified Creators program; it did not state that every Creation would qualify. Read the current status shown for the specific item rather than assuming that a creator, category or previous version is covered. The announcement is available at Bethesda’s November 2024 Starfield update notice.

Labels can change when a Creation is reviewed, reissued or updated. Treat the label as a live property of the version you are about to use. A Creation that was previously free, unmarked or non-friendly can later appear as an updated Verified Creation, but that history does not automatically repair a save that already lost achievement eligibility.

How to install a Creation while protecting an achievement save

Use this sequence whenever you want to try new content but still care about earning Xbox achievements.

  1. Make a separate test save or keep an untouched achievement save. Do not overwrite the only save you use for achievement hunting. A separate playthrough gives you a recovery path if a Creation is later reclassified or causes a warning.
  2. Open Starfield’s Creations menu. Review the item’s detail page in the game, or open the matching entry in Bethesda’s Creations listing if you are checking it outside the game.
  3. Find the exact “Achievement Friendly” label. Do not substitute a creator description, a user comment, a video title or an old screenshot for the current label.
  4. Read the item’s update information and requirements. An updated Creation can behave differently from an earlier release, and a dependency can add another non-friendly item to your loadout.
  5. Install only the content you have verified. If even one desired item lacks the friendly label, install it only on a non-achievement playthrough.
  6. Load the intended save and check the game’s status. If Starfield displays an achievements-disabled message, stop achievement progress on that save until you identify and remove the offending content.

Bethesda’s own guidance is the safest decision rule: assume achievements are disabled unless the individual Creation is explicitly marked Achievement Friendly. The label is a permission for that Creation, not a guarantee that unrelated content, an old version or a broken installation will be harmless.

Do friendly Creations unlock achievements later?

No. A later status change does not restore achievements that were missed earlier. Bethesda’s November 2024 announcement states: “Achievements will not retroactively unlock on previous game saves with Creations, even if those Creations are now achievement friendly.” The practical consequence is important:

  • If you used a non-friendly Creation and the game disabled achievements, removing it later will not cause the achievements you should have earned during that period to appear automatically.
  • If a Creation becomes friendly after you already played with it, start from a save that remains eligible rather than expecting old progress to be backfilled.
  • For a clean achievement run, decide on the save and Creation set before beginning the activities that award achievements.

Why a warning can appear even with an Achievement Friendly Creation

Bethesda has documented a version-history problem in which the game can still show the achievements-disabled message after a player downloads a Verified Creation that was previously available as a free Creation. The game may be detecting the earlier, non-friendly version still associated with the save or installation. Bethesda’s troubleshooting article is Why am I getting an “Achievements are disabled” message with Achievement Friendly Creations?.

Use the following Xbox-safe recovery path:

  1. Open Creations and review every installed item. Look for anything without the Achievement Friendly label, including an older copy or a dependency that was installed automatically.
  2. Remove all non-friendly Creations. Bethesda says to remove non-friendly content when the warning appears.
  3. Check for an earlier version of the updated Creation. If the item was converted from an earlier free release, uninstall that previous version before playing. Having both versions, or leaving the old version attached to the save, can preserve the warning.
  4. Restart the game and recheck the message. Confirm the Creations list and the in-game achievement status before continuing your achievement run.
  5. Keep a backup save from before the installation. If the warning persists, return to that clean save instead of making more progress on a save whose eligibility is uncertain.

Bethesda’s support instructions also mention deleting a file named contentcatalog.txt in one troubleshooting path. That step is explicitly for PC; it is not an Xbox procedure. Xbox players should not search for or delete that file. Use the in-game Creations controls and the version-removal steps instead.

How to disable or uninstall a Creation on Xbox

Bethesda says Creations can be deleted or disabled from Starfield’s in-game Creations menu. The support article, How do I uninstall a Creation for Starfield?, is the authoritative reference for the current menu flow.

Before removing anything, note which saves were created or loaded while that Creation was active. Removing content can produce missing-content prompts, changed locations or other save issues; Bethesda cautions that using Creations can cause problems. If you are troubleshooting achievement eligibility, first preserve a clean save, then disable or uninstall the suspect item, restart Starfield and test from the cleanest available save.

Choosing between an achievement run and a modded run

There is no need to give up Creations entirely. The reliable approach is to separate your goals:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Goal Recommended setup Reason
Earn Xbox achievements Use a save with no non-friendly Creations; install only items currently marked Achievement Friendly. Bethesda’s default rule disables achievements for unmarked content.
Experiment with extensive mods Use a separate character or save set and assume achievements may be unavailable. You can test content without risking the save reserved for achievements.
Recover after a warning Remove non-friendly items and any previous version of an updated Creation, then return to a clean save if needed. Version history can leave the warning active even after a friendly replacement is installed.

Keep the two save types clearly named in Starfield’s load menu. Avoid loading a heavily modded save and then overwriting an achievement save, especially when a Creation changes quests, inventory or world state. A friendly label addresses the achievement rule for that item; it does not make a Creation risk-free for save compatibility.

What to check when an expected achievement does not appear

First determine whether the issue is eligibility or a normal achievement delay. Check the Creations menu for every installed item, including dependencies and older versions. If any item is not marked Achievement Friendly, stop using that save for achievement attempts and return to a save from before the content was installed.

If the list contains only friendly items but the game has shown an achievements-disabled warning, follow Bethesda’s version-history steps rather than assuming the achievement is merely delayed. After cleaning the installation, perform the achievement requirement again on an eligible save. For broader Xbox achievement troubleshooting, Bethesda also maintains What do I do if an Achievement is not unlocking on Xbox?.

Key takeaways for Xbox players

  • Starfield supports Creations on Xbox Series X|S, and the Xbox edition supports Xbox achievements.
  • Creations do not all have the same achievement effect. The individual Achievement Friendly label is decisive.
  • Without that label, Bethesda’s default rule is that achievements are disabled.
  • The friendly status was introduced for eligible Verified Creator Creations in November 2024, not for every Creation.
  • Achievements missed on an earlier save will not unlock retroactively if a Creation later becomes friendly.
  • If a warning persists, remove non-friendly content and any previous version of an updated Creation. Do not apply the PC-only contentcatalog.txt instruction to Xbox.
