Not yet with confidence. The Seamless Landings project described in October 2026 coverage is still in development, and no released mod page or author instruction in those reports confirms that it can be installed on an existing Starfield save. Treat compatibility as unresolved until the author publishes a build with explicit game-version, platform, dependency, installation, and mid-playthrough guidance.
The short answer: compatibility is unconfirmed
The project most people mean by “the seamless landing mod” is Frederik Wessberg’s in-progress Seamless Landings project. PC Gamer’s report dated October 12, 2026 describes a working planetary approach and landing teaser, not a public download. GamesRadar+ reported on October 10 that the author intended to release it free on Nexus Mods when it is ready. Neither report documents installation on an old save.

That leaves two separate questions:
- Does a usable public build exist? The cited coverage does not establish one.
- Can that build be added to a current character? No save-compatibility instruction is documented in the available reporting.
Do not infer a “yes” merely because another landing mod works on an existing playthrough. Landing mods can use entirely different systems: one may replay a vanilla animation, another may change map-marker state, and Seamless Landings appears intended to alter the approach and cell-loading process itself.
What the project is trying to change
In the base game, you select a landing location and encounter a loading screen before arriving. The reported project aims to replace that transition with a continuous descent. GamesRadar+ says the planned experience uses a 3D planetary representation rather than the limited space-view planet model, with volumetric clouds, climate and weather data, storms, lightning, polar auroras, night-side airglow and atmospheric scattering based on the atmosphere described by game data.

PC Gamer’s account describes background asset loading while the player remains able to interact, followed by a final swap into the destination cell. Wessberg explained the mechanism this way: “The underlying loading mechanism is entirely done in the background, while the game is still interactive. We just wait until the assets are finished loading in, and then we do the swap.”
He also described the cloud layer as a visual transition rather than a loading screen: “The clouds are not covering loading – they’re helping make the seam as minimal as possible right at the point when we do the final cell switch, in terms of lighting and exposure, and terrain color.”
Those details explain why ordinary animation-mod compatibility is not a reliable guide. A project that coordinates rendering, streaming and a destination-cell swap may have requirements that do not apply to a mod that simply changes an existing fast-travel scene.

A save-compatibility answer normally comes from the author’s release page or installation notes. You need to know at least:

- the supported Starfield game build;
- the platform and edition;
- required frameworks or other dependencies;
- whether a new game is required;
- whether it is safe to enable during a playthrough;
- what happens to saves made while the mod is active; and
- how to uninstall or roll back.
The October reports do not provide those instructions. They quote or describe the technical concept, not a tested save policy. They also do not establish whether the project writes persistent records, changes explored-location data, adds scripts that remain in a save, or can be removed without consequences. Until those points are stated by the author, the responsible answer is “unknown,” not “safe.”
Do not use other landing mods as proof

APLA’s author also says the mod covers base Starfield and Shattered Space, does not affect points of interest or areas added by other mods without a compatibility patch, and should sit low in the load order when other mods alter vanilla map markers. Those are APLA-specific instructions, not a forecast of Seamless Landings’ requirements.
PC Gamer separately notes mods for seamless grav jumps and seamless planet takeoffs. A mod that handles a different transition is not proof that it will coexist with a seamless planetary-arrival system; the cited coverage does not establish cross-mod compatibility.
What to do if you want to protect a current character
1. Keep an untouched baseline
- Make a manual save before changing the load order or installing any landing-related file.
- Preserve a second copy outside the game’s normal save rotation if your platform and operating system allow it.
- Record the active mod list and load order so you can reproduce the working state.
Do not overwrite the baseline by testing the new mod and then saving over the same slot. A backup is useful only if it remains separate from saves made with the experimental setup.

2. Read the eventual release page, not a demonstration video
When Seamless Landings receives a public page, look specifically for “new game,” “existing save,” “mid-playthrough,” “clean save,” “uninstall,” and “load order” instructions. A visual teaser can prove that a scene works; it cannot establish that a character created months earlier will load safely.
3. Match every stated requirement
Install only when your game version, platform, edition and dependencies match the author’s listed support. If the page names a required load-order position or a conflict with another transition mod, follow that instruction exactly rather than relying on automatic sorting.
4. Test a disposable copy first
Use a duplicate of the current setup and a save you can afford to lose. Visit more than one landing location, then save, quit and reload. Also test a save made before installation so you know whether the mod can be removed cleanly. Stop testing if the game fails to load, a character or quest disappears, or landing behavior becomes inconsistent.
5. Keep the rollback path
Do not uninstall from the only save made with the mod active unless the author says removal is safe. Restore the untouched baseline and its original load order first, then verify that it loads before experimenting again.

Inspecting a setup without claiming compatibility
Vortex save and load-order inspection
Vortex’s Starfield extension documentation says it can parse accessible saves and show which plugins they contain, as well as manage load order. That can reveal whether a plugin is embedded in a save’s current setup and help you document a baseline. The documentation also says Xbox Game Pass saves are inaccessible by default. Inspection is not a compatibility test: a tool can show what is loaded, but it cannot certify that an unreleased project is safe for a playthrough.
SLOK and Plugins.txt preservation
The SLOK repository describes a Windows utility for preserving and restoring Starfield’s Plugins.txt order. Its author says that changing order after a save begins can break items, quests or characters. Treat that as the author’s explanation of the utility’s purpose, not as an independent guarantee against save damage. Preserve the order before testing and restore it only when you are deliberately returning to the old setup.
How to evaluate the release when it arrives

If any deciding field is missing, wait rather than treating silence as permission. “Free on Nexus Mods when ready,” as reported by GamesRadar+, describes the intended distribution and timing; it does not answer the save question.
If you already installed an unconfirmed build
The game will not load
Return to the untouched load order and baseline save. Do not keep launching and saving into the broken setup while trying random order changes; that can make it harder to identify which state was known to work.
Landing markers or animations behave oddly
Check for overlapping landing or map-marker mods first. APLA’s documentation, for example, warns about interactions with areas added by other mods and recommends a low load-order position when vanilla markers are changed. That guidance does not diagnose Seamless Landings, but it illustrates why each mod’s own conflict list matters.
A crash occurs only on an old save
Record whether a new test character loads. If only the older save crashes, stop using that save with the experimental build and restore the baseline. APLA’s author reported this kind of existing-save crash for some testers while being unable to reproduce it; that experience is a warning about implementation-specific behavior, not a measured crash rate for Seamless Landings.
The practical decision
For a current Starfield playthrough, wait for the Seamless Landings release page to state existing-save support. If it explicitly allows mid-playthrough installation, follow its version, dependency, conflict and rollback instructions and test a copied save first. If it requires a new game or clean save, obey that requirement. If the page says nothing, treat the project as unverified and keep playing without it or test only on a disposable character.

The project’s reported rendering approach is ambitious, but technical ambition is not a save-compatibility guarantee. Until the author documents how the mod interacts with persistent saves, no responsible guide can promise that adding it to an established character is safe.
