Your digital PS5 library follows you across the PS5 family, and the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games run on PS5. Accessories are more complicated: a DUALSHOCK 4 works for supported PS4 games but not PS5 games, discs require a drive, PS VR needs older camera hardware, and covers, stands and drives must match the console’s exact CFI model group.
“New PS5 model” can mean the original CFI-1000 series, the slimmer CFI-2000 series, or PS5 Pro. Use the compatibility checks below before buying an accessory or moving a physical game collection.

PlayStation describes the PS4 figure as “the overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 games.” That is a publisher compatibility count, not an independently audited total, and the supported list can change. Check each game’s PlayStation Store listing and any support notes rather than assuming that every PS4 title behaves identically.

PS5 games are tied to DualSense support
Every PS5 game is designed to use a DualSense wireless controller. A DUALSHOCK 4 can pair with the console, but it is limited to supported PS4 games. If a PS5 game displays a controller requirement or refuses input from the older pad, that is expected behavior rather than a pairing fault.

Most PS4 games work, with important exceptions
PlayStation’s backwards-compatibility guidance covers more than 4,000 PS4 games. Some titles are explicitly marked PS4-only. Others launch but may show errors, lose a feature that worked on PS4, or behave unexpectedly. Before buying a new console for one particular game, open that game’s PlayStation Store page and read its compatibility label and support information.
Several PS4-era features are limited on PS5. PlayStation identifies the PS4 SHARE menu, tournament functionality, In-Game Live from PlayStation, the Second Screen app and some game companion apps among the affected features. A game can therefore be playable while still lacking a peripheral or social feature you used on PS4.
Disc and digital editions are not interchangeable
A physical PS4 game requires a disc drive. The disc authenticates the game and must stay in the drive during play. A standard PS5 with an integrated drive can read PS4 discs; a PS5 Digital Edition cannot.

Digital PS4 purchases and saved data can be transferred over Wi-Fi or accessed from compatible USB storage. A disc-free console cannot be made to read an existing PS4 disc collection without a supported add-on drive. The removable drive listed by PlayStation is intended for PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2000 slim models and PS5 Pro, not every earlier Digital Edition.
Why PS3 discs do not work
PS5 does not support PS3 game discs. A PS3 disc therefore cannot be used as a physical backwards-compatible copy on any PS5 model.
Which controllers and game peripherals work?

“Works on PS5” is not a universal guarantee for an older third-party controller. Licensing, firmware and the game’s own input support all matter. Look up the exact model number and confirm that the manufacturer lists support for the PS5 game or PS4 title you intend to play.
Headsets
PlayStation says Platinum and Gold Wireless Headsets work on PS5. Third-party headsets connected through USB or the controller’s audio jack are also supported. Their headset companion app is not compatible with PS5, so features that depend on that app may be unavailable even when game audio and chat work.

Using PS VR and older camera accessories
PS VR can be used with a PS5, but it needs the PS4 PlayStation Camera, model CUH-ZEY1 or CUH-ZEY2, plus a PlayStation Camera adaptor. PlayStation’s support guidance says the adaptor is available at no purchase cost. The PS5 HD Camera does not replace the PS4 camera for PS VR.
Some PS VR games require PlayStation Move motion controllers or support the PS VR Aim controller. PlayStation recommends DUALSHOCK 4 for the best PS VR experience, even though the normal PS5 game rule requires DualSense. That distinction applies to the VR software’s supported input, not to ordinary PS5 games.
PS VR setup checklist
- Confirm that you have a PS VR headset and a PS4 PlayStation Camera, model CUH-ZEY1 or CUH-ZEY2.
- Obtain and connect the PlayStation Camera adaptor; the PS5 HD Camera cannot perform this role.
- Check the individual VR game for Move-controller or PS VR Aim-controller requirements.
- Use DUALSHOCK 4 when the game’s control scheme or PlayStation’s guidance calls for the best PS VR experience.
Model-specific covers, stands and disc drives
Cosmetic covers and physical supports are not interchangeable across the whole PS5 family. Identify the CFI model group before reusing any part. The following compatibility statements come from PlayStation’s PS5 Pro and accessories guidance.

The CFI number is more useful than a retail nickname such as “launch,” “Slim” or “Pro.” Read the model identification on the console or its packaging and match the complete model group in the accessory instructions. Do not force a cover, stand or drive that appears close in size: mounting points and drive openings can differ.
Moving games and saves with USB storage
PS5 accepts USB extended storage that meets the SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps-or-later requirement and has capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB. PlayStation cautions that it cannot guarantee every device will work, so meeting the specification is necessary but not an absolute promise of compatibility.

Use USB storage mainly to carry a large library between consoles or free internal space. It does not turn a Digital Edition into a disc console, and it does not remove the DualSense requirement for PS5 games.
Internal SSD upgrades
Internal expansion is model-sensitive. Verify the exact console model and current PlayStation guidance before selecting an SSD or heatsink. A universal model-by-model compatibility list is not established here, so do not rely on a part advertised only as “PS5 compatible” without checking its specifications against your CFI model.

A safe compatibility check before you buy or reconnect anything
- Record the console model. Write down the complete CFI model group, including whether the console is an original design, CFI-2000 slim or PS5 Pro.
- Classify the game. Decide whether it is a digital PS5 title, digital PS4 title, PS4 disc or PS3 disc. Only the PS4-disc category needs a physical drive, and PS3 discs are unsupported.
- Read the game listing. Check the PlayStation Store compatibility label and any title-specific support notes for PS4 games.
- Match the controller to the generation. Plan on DualSense for PS5 games. Reserve DUALSHOCK 4 for supported PS4 games and the PS VR cases that call for it.
- Identify specialist hardware. For PS VR, gather the PS4 camera and adaptor. For wheels, sticks and third-party pads, verify the exact model and game support.
- Match physical accessories to the CFI group. Covers, bases, stands and removable drives are model-specific. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility table before installation.
- Plan storage. Use compatible USB extended storage for PS4 games you want to play directly and for PS5 games you only need to archive temporarily.
- Test before discarding the old setup. Sign in, launch the specific game, pair the intended controller and test any VR or specialty peripheral before selling the previous console or accessory.
Common problems and the practical fix
“My PS4 disc will not start.”
Confirm that the new console has a disc drive. PS4 discs cannot be read by a PS5 Digital Edition. On a compatible console, leave the disc inserted while playing; a digital license is not created by inserting the disc.
“My DUALSHOCK 4 connects, but the PS5 game ignores it.”
This is normal. Switch to DualSense. DUALSHOCK 4 is supported for compatible PS4 games, not PS5 games.
“PS VR does not detect my camera.”
Use the PS4 PlayStation Camera, model CUH-ZEY1 or CUH-ZEY2, with the Camera adaptor. The PS5 HD Camera is not compatible with PS VR.
“The cover or stand will not fit.”
Stop rather than forcing it. Recheck the CFI model group and the accessory’s compatibility list. PS5 Pro, CFI-1000 and CFI-2000 slim parts are not automatically interchangeable.
“A PS5 game stored on USB will not launch.”
Copy it back to the PS5’s internal console storage. USB extended storage can run PS4 games directly, but PS5 games must be copied back before play.

“The game runs, but an old feature is missing.”
Check the title’s support notes and the PS5 backwards-compatibility limitations. Features such as the PS4 SHARE menu, tournaments, In-Game Live from PlayStation, Second Screen and companion apps may not be available on PS5.
Bottom line
Move your digital library with confidence, but treat every physical game and accessory as a compatibility check. Most PS4 games work, PS5 games require DualSense, PS4 discs require a drive, PS VR requires the older camera-and-adaptor combination, and model-specific hardware must match the exact CFI group. Those five checks prevent nearly every surprise when changing to a new PS5 model.
