For ordinary Remote Play, no. PlayStation Portal needs a paired PS5 and broadband Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi does not have to be your home network, so you can use Portal elsewhere, but it still needs an internet-connected Wi-Fi network. Sony’s cloud-streaming feature is the one exception to the console requirement: it can run selected PS5 games while your PS5 is off or in use, but it still requires broadband Wi-Fi, PlayStation Plus Premium, and an eligible account, country, and game.
What PlayStation Portal actually does
PlayStation Portal is a screen-and-controller device rather than a standalone game console. Its standard mode, Remote Play, receives a live video stream from your PS5 and sends your controller inputs back to that console. The PS5 does the game processing, so the console must be available and connected to the internet.

Sony’s PS Remote Play guidance and the PlayStation Portal FAQ describe broadband internet Wi-Fi as a requirement. Portal therefore cannot launch a Remote Play session when it has no network connection, even if the PS5 and Portal are in the same room.

A PS5 must be paired and reachable
For Remote Play, you need a PS5 paired with Portal. Sony says the console must have broadband internet, be powered on or placed in Rest Mode, and remain available to the Portal. Buying Portal by itself does not replace the console.
#1 Best Overall
- Put Your PS5 in the Palm of Your Hand - PlayStation Portal Remote Player gives you access to the games on your PS5 over your home Wi-Fi*, letting you jump right into gaming without needing to play on a TV.
- Play Your Game Collection - PlayStation Portal Remote Player can play compatible games you have installed on your PS5 console, including your favorite games for PS5 and PS4.**
- Store and Protect – Sturdy outer shell, molded interior and dual zipper pulls provides protection for the PlayStation Portal remote player
- Charging Cable Pass-through – Allows a charging cable to be plugged into the PS Portal while stored inside the case
- Charge and Display – Charge the PlayStation Portal remote player and display it next to your PlayStation5 console
Before leaving home, enable Remote Play on the PS5, sign in with the account you intend to use, and leave the console in a state that permits remote waking. In practice, that means enabling Remote Play in the PS5’s system settings and configuring Rest Mode to keep the console connected to the internet. Start Portal’s pairing process while both devices are available, then test a connection before relying on it away from home.
Wi-Fi does not have to be your home network
“Needs Wi-Fi” does not mean “must be on your home router.” Sony says Portal can be used anywhere you have broadband internet Wi-Fi with at least 5 Mbps for use. A hotel, office, friend’s house, or other location may work if its Wi-Fi provides the required connection and does not interfere with the session. Sony cautions that public Wi-Fi quality may be outside the player’s control, so a network that passes a speed test can still deliver inconsistent play.
Speed targets are thresholds, not performance guarantees
Sony lists 5 Mbps as the minimum for Portal Remote Play and recommends 15 Mbps for a better experience. These figures describe the internet connection, not a promise of a particular frame rate, latency, or image quality. Sony notes that connection quality and game performance vary with network conditions and the game being played.
Cloud streaming: the limited way to play without your PS5
Portal now has a separate cloud-streaming route for selected PS5 games. With this feature, the game runs on Sony’s servers instead of your own console, so your PS5 can be turned off or used by another account while you stream to Portal.

Cloud streaming is not an offline mode. Sony requires an active PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, broadband Wi-Fi, and an account and location where the service is offered. The game must also be included in the supported cloud-streaming catalog. Sony’s current details, country list, and game finder are on its cloud-streaming page.
Cloud-streaming network requirements
Sony states that a cloud session needs at least 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download to start. It lists 7 Mbps for 720p streaming and 13 Mbps for 1080p. Those are Sony’s technical minimums; congestion, latency, packet loss, and the quality of the Wi-Fi link can still affect responsiveness and picture quality.
Eligibility limits
- Subscription: PlayStation Plus Premium is required for Portal cloud streaming.
- Games: Only supported games can be streamed. A title that works through Remote Play is not automatically available from the cloud.
- Country and account: The feature is limited to supported countries and eligible accounts. Check Sony’s current country list rather than assuming availability from the console’s region.
- Age and account type: Sony says child accounts cannot use Portal cloud streaming.
Remote Play versus cloud streaming
| Requirement | Portal Remote Play | Portal cloud streaming |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 console | Required, paired with Portal and powered on or in Rest Mode | Not required for the streaming session; the PS5 may be off or used by another account |
| PlayStation Plus Premium | Not required solely for Remote Play | Required |
| Game selection | Games installed and playable on your paired PS5 | Select supported PS5 games in Sony’s cloud catalog |
| Connection | Broadband Wi-Fi; at least 5 Mbps, with 15 Mbps recommended for a better experience | Broadband Wi-Fi; 5 Mbps upload and download to start, 7 Mbps for 720p, and 13 Mbps for 1080p |
| Location and account | Use wherever broadband internet Wi-Fi is available | Supported country, eligible account, Premium subscription, and an eligible game |
How to prepare Portal for use away from home
- Update and sign in. Make sure the PS5 and Portal use current system software, then sign in to the PlayStation account that will be used for Remote Play.
- Enable Remote Play on the PS5. In the PS5 settings, turn on the Remote Play option. The console must be connected to broadband internet.
- Configure Rest Mode connectivity. Set the PS5 so it can stay connected to the internet and be awakened for Remote Play while in Rest Mode. If the console is completely powered down, Portal cannot wake it for a normal Remote Play session.
- Pair Portal at home. Follow Portal’s on-screen pairing process while the PS5 is available. Pairing links the device to the console and account; it does not turn Portal into an independent console.
- Test before traveling. Start a Remote Play session from the same location where the PS5 is installed. Confirm that the console wakes from Rest Mode and that the games you want are installed and launch correctly.
- Check the destination Wi-Fi. Verify that the broadband Wi-Fi reaches Sony’s stated minimum. Public networks can have sign-in pages, traffic controls, or congestion that you cannot control, so test the actual network rather than relying on its advertised speed.
What happens in common scenarios
You have Portal but no PS5
Remote Play is unavailable because there is no console to supply the game stream. The only possible route is cloud streaming, and that works only for supported games with PlayStation Plus Premium in an eligible country and account. If those conditions are not met, Portal alone cannot play your PS5 library.

Your PS5 is at home and you are elsewhere
This is the normal Remote Play use case. Leave the paired PS5 connected to broadband internet and powered on or in Rest Mode, then connect Portal to broadband Wi-Fi at your destination. The destination network does not need to be the same home network.

Your PS5 is being used by another account
Remote Play normally needs access to the paired console, so another person using it can prevent or interrupt your session. Cloud streaming avoids that console conflict for supported games because the game runs on Sony’s servers.
You have no Wi-Fi connection at all
Neither mode is designed for offline play. Remote Play needs Wi-Fi to reach your PS5, and cloud streaming needs Wi-Fi to reach the streaming service. Portal does not download a game to run locally when disconnected.
Troubleshooting connection and eligibility problems
Portal cannot find or wake the PS5
- Confirm that Remote Play is enabled on the PS5 and that the console is connected to broadband internet.
- Check that the PS5 is in Rest Mode rather than fully powered off.
- Verify that Portal is paired with the same PlayStation account and console you prepared at home.
- Return to the home network and test locally. If local pairing works but an outside network fails, the destination Wi-Fi is the variable to investigate.
The session starts but feels unstable
- Measure the connection at the location where Portal is being used. For Remote Play, compare it with Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation.
- For cloud streaming, check both upload and download: 5 Mbps is Sony’s session-start minimum, while 7 Mbps and 13 Mbps are the stated targets for 720p and 1080p.
- Move closer to the Wi-Fi access point or use a less congested network when possible. A speed result alone cannot guarantee smooth play because Sony says performance varies with network conditions and the game.
- If the network is public, account for quality and controls outside your control. A hotel or venue may limit sustained traffic even when the initial connection succeeds.
A cloud game is missing
Do not assume that every PS5 title is streamable. Check Sony’s current cloud game finder and country information, confirm that the account has PlayStation Plus Premium, and make sure the account is not a child account. A game can remain available through Remote Play on your own PS5 without being eligible for cloud streaming.

- Choose Remote Play if you own a PS5, want access to games installed on it, and can keep that console connected and available.
- Consider cloud streaming if you have PlayStation Plus Premium, your country and account qualify, and the games you want appear in Sony’s supported catalog. This is useful when the PS5 is off or another account is using it.
- Do not buy Portal expecting offline play. Both operating modes depend on broadband Wi-Fi, and the cloud option adds subscription and catalog restrictions.
In short, Portal can work away from your home network, but it cannot work without a network. Standard Remote Play also requires your PS5; cloud streaming removes that console requirement only for eligible games and accounts.
